ROYAL OAK, Mich., March 10 (UPI) -- Some dietary Nike jordan melo 1.5 supplements may harm rather than help prostate cancer patients, U.S. researchers say. Researchers at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak,Nike jordan 2.5 Mich., looked at three widely used commercial prostate-specific dietary supplements taken by many prostate cancer patients to improve or increase sexual potency or alleviate symptoms associated with poor prostate health. The study, published in the International Journal ofNike jordan 3.5 Radiation Oncology*Biology*Physics, finds cell growth and sensitivity to radiation of the malignant tumor cells were not affected by any of the supplements. However, two supplements inhibited the growth rateNike jordan 6 ring of normal prostate cells and the third also increased the cellular sensitivity to radiation of some normal cell lines by inhibiting DNA repair. Study senior author Brian Marples said the study showsNike jordan 10.5 what some patients believe is helping them may actually be harming them. "It is very important for all patients to discuss any type of Nike Jordan 2009 supplement they may be taking with their physician and especially important for prostate cancer patients receiving radiation therapy as this study shows that it may be negatively affecting the effectiveness of their treatments," Marples says in a statement. "This latest analysis emphasizes that we can't afford to jordanbe complacent about this infection," Dr. John M. Douglas Jr., director of CDC's division of STD prevention, said during the news conference. "It is important that we promote steps to prevent the spread of jordan shoesgenital herpes, not only because herpes is a lifelong and incurable infection but also because of the linkage between herpes and HIV infection." Dr. David L. Katz, director of the Prevention Research Center atair jordan shoes the Yale University School of Medicine, described herpes as a "bellwether for sexually transmitted diseases ... because it suggests that other such exposures may have occurred and because it increases vulnerability when they do." "Unfortunately, we have no perfect defense againstair jordan herpes since it cannot be cured and there is, as yet, no vaccine," Katz said. Though he predicted that a vaccine would eventually be developed, increased diligence is needed in the meantime, he added. That should include "heightened awareness among both clinicians and patients, routine dialogue on the topic in all primary care settings, guidance to all patients on prevention strategies and routine availability of condoms and other barrier contraceptive devices," Katz said. "The high prevalence of herpes, and the disparities with which it is associated, indicate we can do this job better and more equitably," he said.

Toyota, using results of testing it Nike Dunk Shoescommissioned, will seek to rebut allegations that its cars' electronics are at fault for unwanted acceleration. A professor's experiment, demonstrated in an ABC News report and described in congressional testimony, alleged that Toyota Avalon's electronic controls were vulnerable to short circuits. Toyota's report today says the experiment's "highly artificial conditions" would not occur in real use. The embattled automaker also faces a demand from nike dunkunsatisfied House Democrats that it provide this week engineers or managers with "personal knowledge" of its efforts regarding unintended acceleration. The House Energy and Commerce Committee, in a letter to Toyota's U.S. sales chief, said that thereNike Dunk SB Low Men is "an absence of documents" to show Toyota has thoroughly investigated whether electronics are causing unintended acceleration. The panel held a hearing about Toyota on Feb. 23. Toyota President Akio Toyoda told a different House committee Feb. 24 he is "absolutely confident" there is no electronics problem. Adding pressure, however, is that the government said Thursday that it has "more than 60" reports from Nike Dunk SB Low WomenToyota owners about unintended acceleration in cars recalled and repaired by Toyota for what it says could cause the problem: 2.3 million vehicles in the U.S. to fix gas pedals that could stick and 5.3 million over floor mats that might jam pedals. USA TODAY found at least 14 new acceleration complaints filed Friday and Saturday from owners who had already had their vehicles fixed under the recall. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is vowing to order Toyota to make more repairs if the automaker's current remedies are found lacking. In an unusual move, NHTSA says it is contacting each individualNike Dunk SB High Men who's made a new complaint after a dealer made recall repairs. Among new complaints: An owner from Meridian, Miss., told NHTSA Saturday that since the recall repairs were made last month on the person's 2006 Toyota Avalon "now my vehicle acceleration malfunctions every time I drive it." The owner (NHTSA does not reveal names) reported nearly hitting another car at a stop sign because of the problem. Toyota today will present the technical report it commissioned by testing firm Exponent in a Web briefing for journalists intended to refute allegations that its electronic controls can go haywire. The report deals with an experiment by David Gilbert, an associate professor at Southern Illinois University, that showed the wiring in a Toyota Avalon could malfunction in a way that creates unintended acceleration. Reporting from Washington - With healthcare legislation mired in partisanship, "tea party" activists on the march and GOP leadership dominated by conservatives, Capitol Hill looks like a parched landscape for the withered moderate wing air Shox R4 Perforationof the Republican Party. But green shoots are sprouting in Washington and on the campaign trail. A small band of Republican moderates in the Senate broke a logjam on jobs legislation. They added to their ranks with the arrival of another New England Republican, Scott Brown. And several moderate Republicans are in a good position to win Senate seats in November. Rep. Michael N. Castle, one of the most liberal Republicans in the House, is heavily favored to win an open Senate seat in Delaware. Rep. Mark Steven Kirk, the GOP nominee for the Illinois Senate seat, handily won the party's primary despite opposition from conservatives. air Shox R4 Plating Other centrist Senate candidates -- such as former Reps. Tom Campbell in California and Rob Simmons in Connecticut, and Gov. Charlie Crist in Florida -- still face conservative opposition in primary contests that are seen as battles for the ideological soul of the party. But more is at stake. Additional moderates in the Senate could provide a more durable foundation for breaking logjams than any White House summit or lecture on bipartisanship. "Casting votes that are opposed by the party leadership is very difficult," said Sen. Susan Collins of Maine, one of the five Republicans who voted with Democrats to end a filibuster on the jobs bill. "I'm very optimistic the elections this year are going to bring back a resurgence of the center." That seems paradoxical as Democrats prepare to enact President Obama's healthcare bill without any Republican support. Senate Democratic leaders are moving to use a fast-track procedure known as reconciliation to protect the effort from filibuster. air Shox R4 Plating Air CushionThe idea is for the House to pass the Senate's healthcare bill, then for both chambers to pass a companion bill by a majority vote. In a television interview Sunday, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) told CNN that he expected no Republicans to vote for the bill. In a separate interview, Rep. Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) said on "Fox News Sunday" that House Democrats were short of votes to pass the Senate healthcare bill, but that Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-San Francisco) probably would find a way to pass it. "I wouldn't count her out because she is very good at muscling votes," Ryan said. Although conservatives have dominated legislative strategy and intraparty debate over the future of the Republican Party, centrists have a stronger hand in swing states. air Shox R4 PU The Massachusetts special election was a case in point. Brown campaigned on conservative themes and was backed by tea party activists, but he had a middle-of-the-road record on abortion and other social issues. By voting to end the jobs filibuster, Brown served notice that he will not always hew to the GOP line. That roll call was a watershed for other Republicans too, because during the Obama administration, moderates generally had supported GOP filibusters -- even of bills that Republicans supported. Joining Brown to advance the jobs bill were Maine's two Republicans, Olympia J. Snowe and Collins, and two retiring senators, George V. Voinovich of Ohio and Christopher S. Bond of Missouri. The Snowe-Collins-Voinovich axis was familiar in years past. In the George W. Bush presidency, they helped form a bloc of swing votes in battles over tax cuts and spending. But they lost key allies when Sens. Gordon Smith of Oregon and Norm Coleman of Minnesota lost reelection bids in 2008, and Sen. Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania left the GOP to become a Democrat. Analysts disagree about what constitutes a GOP moderate these days, but most agree there are a lot fewer of them than 20 years ago. In the past, more Republicans regularly crossed party lines and sympathized with liberal causes such as gun control and stricter environmental protection. New England was their bastion, but the number of Republicans from that region hasair Shox R4 Three Age plummeted. In January, however, Brown's election in Massachusetts fueled GOP hopes that the tide may turn. "What's happening is the return of the Republican Party to the Northeast and upper Midwest," Kirk said. "Those voters will have a voice in both parties." Republican moderates in primary fights are under heavy pressure to turn to the right. Simmons in Connecticut, for example, has renounced his past support for legislation to combat global warming as he runs to succeed retiring Democratic Sen. Christopher J. Dodd. And Simmons has taken to carrying a tea bag in his copy of the Constitution, a nod to grass-roots activists. But a moderate record and reputation are general-election assets -- if not prerequisites -- in states like Connecticut, Delaware and Illinois, which backed Obama in 2008. Kirk has parted ways with conservatives on major issues including escalation of the Iraq war, gun control and abortion rights, and he had to contend with a conservative air Shox R4 Transparent Fundusopponent to win the Illinois GOP primary. In Delaware, Castle has been a leader of the House's most prominent moderate faction, the Tuesday Group. Both Kirk and Castle have been derided by conservatives as RINOs -- "Republicans in Name Only." In Florida, Crist trails his conservative opponent, Marco Rubio, a cause celebre for tea party activists. Crist's "trespasses" include supporting Obama's economic stimulus law, but the GOP establishment favors him as a stronger general election candidate. In California, Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer is favored to win reelection, but it is a sign of bad times for Democrats nationwide that the state is even in doubt. Campbell is the least conservative in a three- way contest for the GOP nomination, but he may not have enoughair Shox R4 Women Shoes financing to survive the primary. His opponents are Carly Fiorina, the former chief of Hewlett-Packard, and Chuck DeVore, an Orange County assemblyman. Even if more moderate Republicans make it to the Senate, Democrats will need to refresh their skills in dealing with them. In the healthcare debate, Democrats failed to keep Snowe, who voted for an early version but opposed the final bill. In an emblem of that failed courtship, Obama invited air Shox R5 Girl KidSnowe to his health-policy summit, but not until the day before the event. By then, GOP leaders had picked their own conservative team, and Snowe turned down the White House offer. Jennifer Duffy, an election analyst with the nonpartisan Cook Political Report, put it this way: "What moderates need is for Democrats to use them for something other than props."

Moscow An epic battle isugg boots shaping up in Ukraine as two bitter rivals, Yulia Tymoshenko and Viktor Yanukovych, prepare to slug it out for a dubious prize: leading a nation economically devastated and politically disillusioned, as well as profoundly divided between its Russian-speaking, pro-Moscow eastern provinces and its more nationalist, Europe-leaning west. President Viktor Yushchenko, lofted to power five years ago on the wings of the pro-democracy "Orange Revolution," went down in flames in the presidential election's first round Jan. 17, winning a humiliating 5.5 percent of the votes.Ugg Ultra The second round, pitting Mr. Yanukovych, who won 35.3 percent support in the first round, against Ms. Tymoshenko, with 25 percent, is slated for Feb. 7. With Mr. Yushchenko sidelined, much of the East-West geopolitical tension that has marred domestic politics may dissipate, leaving the contenders to address the economic crisis, endemic corruption, and the status of the Russian language, spoken by about a third of Ukrainians. Yanukovych and Tymoshenko haveUgg Classic Cardy signaled they would go slow on anti-Moscow policies Yushchenko championed, including NATO membership, integration with the European Union, and plans to evict Russia's Navy from its historic Black Sea post in Crimea. But experts say the contest is likely to be ferocious, revolving around clashing personalities and the differing styles of two political giants who have tussled in parliament. On Thursday, Yushchenko signed a law repealing a requirement that representatives of both candidates be present to supervise vote-counting at polling stations. Tymoshenko warned that this could lead to ballot-box stuffing and fraudulent vote-counting. She has urged her supporters to come out in large numbers if she does not prevail in Sunday'Ugg Classic Minis election, and has said that protests could outsize those of the Orange Revolution. "There is a fear that this struggle between Tymoshenko and Yanukovych could destabilize Ukraine's political process if it gets out of hand," says Alexander Sushko, with the independent Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation in Kiev (Kyiv). "Neither of them has a natural sentiment for democracy, as Yushchenko did, and the biggest threat we face is that the loser may call supporters into the streets," to overturn an adverse popular verdict, he warns. Both contenders will seek to attract the nearly 35 percent of votes garnered by more than a dozen losing candidates in the first round. Yanukovych is a dour, Russian-speaking technocrat from Donetsk, a coal-and-steel center in eastern Ukraine, where many people still regret the demise of the USSR. As a young man, he served prison time for petty theft, a fact Tymoshenko is sure to deploy. But he's hailed as an able administrator in eastern Ukraine, and his two terms as prime minister appear to bear that out. "I've seen him work Ugg Classic Shorteffectively with all kinds of people, from wealthy oligarchs to plant managers to ordinary workers," says Vladislav Lukyanov, a parliamentary deputy from Donetsk for Yanukovych's Party of Regions. "He will bring normal government to Ukraine." But Yanukovych may find it hard to win over central and western Ukraine, where many still blame him for allegedly rigging the 2004 presidential elections, triggering the three weeks of rolling street demonstrations in Kiev that became known as the Orange Revolution. Critics say Yanukovych is ill-suited to lead Ukraine into the European fold. "He's not someone to fear as a possible dictator," says Dmitry Vydrin, an independent deputy of the Rada, Ukraine's parliament. "But on the other hand, I doubt his ability to improve things. He's not an ideal leader for a big European country." Tymoshenko earned a fortune dealing in Russian energy in the 1990s, and spent months in prison on corruption charges under former Ugg Classic TallPresident Leonid Kuchma. Critics say she may suffer from perceptions that she spent more time sparring with Yushchenko than trying to stem the economic crisis. Her great strength, say both critics and supporters, is her attractive public persona and a mesmerizing speaking style. "She is an extraordinarily determined person; she can't be kept down," says Vira Nanivska, director of the City Institute in Lviv, an independent political research center. "There is no doubt that she is an outstanding politician, but one has the impression she will do anything it takes to win." Material from wires was used in this report.

A 5.9 earthquake ugg bootsstruck off the coast of Northern California this afternoon, about one month after a major shaker rocked the quake-prone region. The USGS said Thursday's temblor — originally reported at 6.0 magnitude — occurred at 12:20 p.m. about 47 miles west southwest of Eureka. Items fell from walls and shelves but there were no reports of major damage. Officials say the quake was not strong enough to trigger a tsunami. Humboldt County spokesman Phil Smith-Hanes says he felt a rolling sensation, but the movement didn't feel as severe as the magnitude-6.5 quake that struck off the coast last month about 18 miles away. The larger temblor Jan. 9 caused more than $40 million in damage and one serious injury — an elderly woman who fell and broke her hip. Thursday's quake was felt as far south as San Francisco, east to Redding and north to Oregon's Grant Pass. uggs outlet stores Steve Walter, a seismologist at the USGS in Menlo Park, said Thursday's quake was not an aftershock because it occurred on a different fault, but "we could speculate it might have been triggered by the one last month." This is the seismic capital of the state, one of the few places in the world where three gigantic tectonic plates merge. Because of the different directions and various rates of movement of the plates, the area absorbs great geologic strain and often fractures. Historic research shows that every 300 to 400 years, the region experiences a huge quake in the range of about 9 magnitude. By comparison, the earthquake thatugg boots on sale leveled the capital of Haiti measured 7.0. But because Northern California is rural, with a scattered population residing in wood frame housing that is built to code, this region's earthquakes tend to be much less devastating. Eureka Fire Chief Eric Smith said crews were checking on structures that were damaged in the previous earthquake to make sure they're secure. Humboldt County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Brenda Godsey, who was in a restaurant at the time, said the quake lasted 25 to 30 seconds, with none of the violent jolts felt last month. "Everybody was very calm and just sort of waited it out," she said, adding that sheriff's dispatchers received no significant calls. Ugg Nightfall At the Petrolia General Store, a box of cereal and some sardine cans tumbled from the shelves, but the windows remained intact. "Glass bottles were rattling, and you could see the lights swinging back and forth," said Amie Barr, 30, a store employee. "But it didn't feel as strong (as the Jan. 9 quake). "We have them all the time, so Ugg Sandalswe're pretty used to it here." The Associated Press and Mercury News Staff Writer Lisa M. Krieger contributed to this report.

Collectively, the session's top 10 finishers grossed $101.7 million, or 6% more than top performers in the comparable weekend last year, according to boxoffice tracker Rentrak. That makes for four year-over-year weekend up-ticks out of five frames marked so far in 2010. Produced by Gibson's Icon Prods., "Darkness" was screened lightly prior to its release, with Warners foregoing the usual all-media screening for the industry press corps in lieu of a handful of small screenings for film critics. The conflict with the northern rebels, who complain of buy ugg bootssocial, religious and economic discrimination in the southern Arabian state, has rumbled on since 2004, but intensified last year and drew in oil-rich Saudi Arabia. The rebels are known as the Houthis after the family name of their leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi. Here is some background about the Houthi rebels: WHO ARE THE HOUTHIS? * The Houthis, like most tribesmen in Yemen's northerncheap ugg boots highlands, belong to the Zaidi sect of Shi'ite Islam, whose Hashemite line ruled for 1,000 years before the 1962 revolution. * Zaidis, who make up about a third of Yemen's 23 million people, have coexisted easily with majority Sunnis in the past, but Badr al-Din al-Houthi, a cleric from the northern province of Saada, promoted Zaidi revivalism in the 1970s, playing on fears that Saudi-influenced Salafis threatened Zaidi identity. * After north and south Yemen united in 1990, the movement Ugg Gypsy sandals spawned the al-Haq party and the Houthi-led Believing Youth group. Houthi's son Hussein was elected to parliament in 1993. Saada remained neglected economically by the Sanaa government. * President Ali Abdullah Saleh, himself a Zaidi, at first used the Houthis to counter-balance the Salafi groups. The government later portrayed Believing Youth as a fundamentalist group out to subvert the state and restore the Zaidi imamate. * After the September 11, 2001 attacks on U.S. cities, Saleh declared support for Washington's "war on terror," in part to enlist U.S. support against the Houthis, whom Yemeni officials accuse of having links to al Qaeda, Iran or Lebanon's Hezbollah. * The Houthis say the government, with U.S. and Saudi backing, is targeting Zaidis in general, forcing them to take up arms to defend their villages against oppression. CONFLICT BEGINS: Ugg Halendi sandals * Conflict began after Houthis embarrassed Saleh by shouting "Death to America, death to Israel, a curse on the Jews, victory to Islam" in his presence in a Saada mosque in 2003. * Security forces killed Hussein al-Houthi in September 2004, only to see further rounds of fighting erupt in the mountains around Saada city, each more violent than the last. * Qatar brokered a ceasefire in June 2007 and sponsored a peace deal signed in February 2008, but clashes soon resumed. Saleh unilaterally declared the war over in July 2008. Full-scale fighting resumed a year later. * Rebel leader Abdul-Malik al-Houthi said on Saturday he wasUgg Morocco sandals prepared to accept government conditions for a truce. * But a government official said on Sunday: "The Houthi offer is rejected as it does not vow to end attacks on Saudi Arabia and because it sets as a condition an end to military operations (by the government) first." A SAUDI OFFENSIVE: * In November, Saudi Arabia launched a military offensive against the rebels after a rebel cross-border incursion. Houthis denied accusations that infiltrators entered Saudi territory and called the offensive against the group "unjustified" and accused it of mainly targeting civilians through air raids. * Saudi Arabia claimed victory on December 26, saying the army had driven the last infiltrators from its territory, an Arabic language daily said. Rebels have reported that Saudi air strikes on the Yemen-Saudi border were continuing. * Saudi Arabia once more declared victory on Wednesday following a ceasefire offer from the insurgents, who said they had withdrawn from Saudi territory.Ugg Tasmina Braid Sandals * Yemeni Shi'ite rebels said on Thursday that Saudi air and artillery attacks had continued despite a truce offer by the dissidents to the kingdom. No decision has been made on whether to change the currentuggs outlet stores plan to hold the September 11 terrorist attack trial in a civilian court in lower Manhattan, White Houseugg boots on sale officials said Sunday. Last week, New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and other politicians expressed concern over the costs and disruption of holding the trial of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and four accomplices at a New York City courthouse. David Axelrod, the senior adviser to President Obama, and White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said Sunday that Obama believes the trial should take place in a criminal court instead of before a military commission, as permitted for some terrorism suspects. However, Axelrod and Gibbs ugg bootsacknowledged that Obama and the Justice Department were considering moving the trial from New York City. "We've made no decisions on that yet," Axelrod said on the NBC program "Meet the Press." Gibbs, speaking on CNN's "State of the Union," also said the location of the trial was under discussion, but he expressed certainty that Mohammed, the alleged mastermind of the September 11, 2001, attacks, "is going to meet justice and he's going to meet his maker." Gibbs and Axelrod criticized Republican opposition to the plan to hold the trial in a criminal court, saying no one complained when the previous administration of Republican President George W. Bush put terrorism suspects such as "shoe bomber" Richard Reid on trialUgg Fluff Flip Flop in U.S. criminal courts. "Now we have a Democratic president and suddenly we hear these protests," Axelrod said. "What has changed between now and then that would cause people to reverse positions?" Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Kentucky, told the CNN program that the Bush administration was wrong to hold terrorism trials on U.S. soil. Instead, trials for dangerous terrorism suspects should be held by military commissions at the Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, detention facility where they currently are held, McConnell said. Obama intends to shut down the Guantanamo facility by transferring the roughly 200 suspects to the United States to stand trial or face indefinite detention, or to third countries. McConnell said Sunday he would fight that plan by trying to withhold federal spending for it. "'I think that will be done on a bipartisan basis," McConnell said of congressional opposition, adding that "whatever domestic support they had for this is totally collapsing." White House officials say the decision about any possible alternate sites to try Mohammed and the others will come from the Justice Department. New York police estimated that the cost to the city would be moreUgg Kids than $200 million per year in what could be a multi-year trial and that more than 2,000 checkpoints would need to be installed around Lower Manhattan. Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said additional protection would have to be deployed for the city, not just "the core area of Manhattan." Bloomberg initially supported the move, saying "it is fitting that 9/11 suspects face justice near the World Trade Center site where so many New Yorkers were murdered." However, Bloomberg used different rhetoric last week when asked about a community agency's proposals to relocate the trial, saying he would prefer the trial be held elsewhere, perhaps at a military base where it would be easier and cheaper to provide security. "It's going to cost an awful lot of money and disturb a lot of people," Bloomberg said. On Thursday, several New York Democratic politicians urged the Obama administration to thoroughly re-examine locating the trial in downtown Manhattan. Julie Menin, chairwoman of a city community advisory agency, proposed four alternative locations for the trial within the Southern District of New York: Governors Island, Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and the Bureau of Prisons jail complex at FCI Otisville. The latter three are in Orange County, New York, less tUgg Nightfallhan an hour from New York City, county executive Edward Diana told CNN. Diana thinks the trials should not be held anywhere in New York, and definitely not in Orange County, which lost 44 residents in the terror attacks, he said. "I've contacted my legal department and I'll tell you I'll do whatever it takes to stop those trials from coming here, even if it means closing down our roads," Diana said. "I'll sue the federal government if need be." Diana said he'd be worried about the safety of Orange County residents if the trial comes there. Diana, who shot down an offer from Newburgh to host the proceedings in their new courthouse, said the suspects should not be tried in civilian courts. But Newburgh Mayor Nick Valentine said the boost in media presence and police funding during the trial would help his "very poor, very urban" city. Newburgh's new $22 million courthouse is safe and has "every security you could want," Valentine said. An alternate proposal at the West Point location has not been fully reviewed. A West Point spokesman said no one has officially requested a review of demands for such a trial, which would require in-depth study of legal and security concerns. U.S. Attorney's Office spokesman Dean Boyd said the JusticeUgg Sandals Department "can safely prosecute this case in the Southern District of New York while minimizing disruptions to the community to the greatest extent possible, consistent with security needs." New York Gov. David Paterson will meet with the U.S. Marshal Service on Monday to discuss possible 9/11 trial locations in the state, Paterson spokeswoman Marissa Shorenstein told CNN.

Haiti News The Talibanugg boots on sale launched a coordinated attack on the Afghan capital Monday, paralyzing the city for most of the day as militants set off explosions, took over buildings and attempted to disrupt the swearing-in of new cabinet ministers. At least 12 people were killed, including buy ugg bootsseven militants, and 71 people were injured—mostly by hand-grenade fragments—by the time the attacks were over, said Afghan Defense Minister Abdul Rahim Wardak. Seven insurgents were shot dead in the fighting and an unknown number of other militants died in suicide blasts, he said. Gun battles, punctuated by bomb and rocket blasts, raged in the usually heavily protected center of the city for more than four hours. Smoke billowed from a shopping center overrun by the insurgents just a few yards from the presidential palace. The assault, claimed by the Taliban and believed to be carried out by members of an allied militant network led by Sirajuddin Haqqani, was among the most spectacular in Kabul in recent years. The Taliban—though relatively unpopular in Kabul and vastly outnumbered in the city by security forces—have increasingly focused on high-profile Ugg Dakota sandalsattacks on the Afghan capital, aiming to embarrass President Hamid Karzai's administration and to showcase the insurgency's reach. "To be able to infiltrate at such depth, into the inner periphery of power here, is a mind-blowing achievement" for the Taliban, said Afghan parliament member Daud Sultanzoi. "If you look at the pattern, they are steadily escalating in their coordination and their capability." Afghan and Western officials, however, termed Monday's assault a failure for the insurgents because, unlike in a similar raid on the Ministry of Justice in the same area a year ago, the militants couldn't seize any government buildings and didn't inflict large casualties. In contrast to the response to an October assault on a United Nations guest house, Afghan troops Monday were prompt to arrive on the scene, engaging the insurgents and preventing wider bloodshed. "We did not allow them to spread the catastrophe," said Amrullah Saleh, the head of Afghanistan's intelligence agency, the National Ugg Gypsy sandalsDirectorate for Security. "The attack was in no way a success for them." Commanders in the U.S.-led international military coalition, which is aiming to train and develop Afghan security forces so that they can eventually take over the fight against the Taliban, agreed. Afghan security forces "effectively dealt with the situation and should be commended," said U.S. Gen. Stanley McChrystal, the commander of some 110,000 American-led international troops in Afghanistan. President Barack Obama is sending some 30,000 additional American troops to Afghanistan this year, mostly to Taliban strongholds in the south and east of the country. Few of these troops will be heading to Kabul, which—while subjected to regular bombing Ugg Halendi sandalsand shooting attacks by insurgents—isn't seen as being at risk of falling to the Taliban anytime soon. Monday's bloodshed began during the morning rush hour at Kabul's central Pashtunistan square, a traffic-clogged circle ringed by some of the country's most important buildings. These include the central bank, the entrance to the presidential palace, the ministries of finance, justice and mines, the Ferushgah shopping center, and the luxury Serena hotel favored by Westerners.
