Preparing for finals is difficult in Spain. I’m without a 24-hour library, midnight screams and the collective stressWildwood Free Trail 90 of 40,000-plus students. Instead, I’m surrounded by the best weather I could ask for, a beach within minutes and a culture that exudes relaxation. I really just want to drink sangria in the park — staying inside is nearly impossible. Schoolwork aside though, my Semana Santa proved to be one of the most interesting travel experiences thus far. First, I went to Prague with Charlotte. We had planned to go to Amsterdam, or Italy, or Portugal. But if I’ve learned anything from making travel plans, nothing is in stone until tickets are purchased and we eventually bought two to Prague. Prague is considered the most westernized city in Eastern Europe so I’m eager to see other parts of Eastern Europe because Prague was different than any other European city I’ve visited. It was beautiful and mysterious and fascinating. We had a guidebook, but no set plans aside from our shared interest in exploration. So we toured the Prague Castle, unsuccessfully searched for the John Lennon graffiti wall and instead stumbled upon an underground exhibit of the history of mining in Prague. The last part was more eerie than educational. Another thing about Prague: TheyAir Jordan shoes 1 use the Czech crown, which translated to about 18 crowns to every dollar. Dropping 200 crowns a meal felt sweet until I realized it’s only about $10. I can’t leave Prague without mentioning the bone church. Charlotte and I bought train tickets to where we hoped was the right destination — a little town called Kutna Hora — and ended up at an exhibit of bones of more than 40,000 people. So replace the plague victims with the stressed-out MSU students and you get the idea. The small church welcomed visitors with a chandelier made of bones, a family crest made of bones, light fixtures made of bones and if that’s not enough bones — each corner had a floor-to-ceiling display of human bones. To say it was bone chilling would be cliché, but true in every way possible. I stopped in Valencia for a day before jet-setting to London to stay with my friend, Alice. My first reaction: English language. After four months or hearing Spanish, or German, French or Czech, hearing English everywhere felt foreign. I could communicate without stumbling over complicated Spanish constructions or the most basic Czech words. My friend Alice let me stay with her and 20 other study abroad students in a flat that’s about as clean as a frat house, but it’s across the street from Hyde Park and was free so I didn’t complain. Instead, I walked around the park and it smelled like freshly cut grass and spring flowers. I saw Buckingham Palace, other British stuff like that and ate fish and chips. I went to Portobello Market, bought a funky dress and soaked up more history at the Imperial War Museum. I went to the London Tower, but didn’t want to pay 17 pounds to get in so I just took pictures of the outside and watched a demonstration in ancient weaponry. After a walk across the London Bridge, I got to the Globe Theater just in time to get a free tour of the place in celebration of Shakespeare’s birthday. I walked around inside, wishing I had read more Shakespeare or had more patience for crowds of tourists. I read two lines from a Sonnet on camera as part of the theater’s attempt to break the world record to number of sonnets read in one day (though my guess is they’re probably just trying to break their own previous record). Then I went to the Tate Modern where I enjoyed some of the art, tried to understand more of Jordan II shoesit and thought the rest was just pretentious. After a week of trains, planes and cross-cultural interactions, coming back to Valencia felt like coming back home.

The 2008-09 school year is over, but for graduates, now is the time to reflect on what happened and cherish the memories. Most people spend four yearsNike Men Air Force 1 High in college, and for most people those four years are the best of their lives. Seniors will walk across the stage next week, donned in their caps and gowns, hands stretched out for their diplomas. It’s both a beginning and an end. But as seniors end this chapter in their lives — quite possibly the most fun, entertaining and enlightening chapter — they must not forget everything that has happened in these four years. From the first Welcome Week to the last exam, it has been nothing short of an interesting ride. It’s not every year the eventual president of the United States visits campus, or the men’s basketball team plays in the national championship game. Life becomes a different sort of jordan 6 ringinteresting now, though. It’s important to reflect on the past, but even more crucial to think about the future — no matter how painful that may be in these times. Jobs are scarce, and graduates must face that fact. The opportunities that existed even two or three years ago are disappearing and salaries are dwindling. To put it lightly, it’s not the ideal time to graduate. Being a college student means it’s possible to live in a bubble, to not have to think about the difficult job hunting ahead. Getting a job right after graduation might seem essential, but there are other options that might be more appealing today than ever before. Take the time to travel, if possible, or join the Peace Corps, Teach for America or even teach English to students in Japan. These experiences can teach students more about life than they would learn by sitting behind a desk, which is something future employers would love to see on a résumé. And when else would someone participate in such a program? People are part of the workforce once they get a job and after that there are few opportunities to do things like travel the world in the Peace Corps. This economy will rebound and there will once again be jobs — just maybe not by next Saturday. It’s not a bad idea to take another internship, either. The pay isn’t the same as a full-time job, but it’s experience nonetheless. And it’s a bad thing in this economy to be greedy. If an opportunity presents itself, take it and make the most of it. That internship could eventually turn into a job. Graduate school applications are on the rise, a subtle sign students have realized getting a job right after they shed their caps and gowns is very difficult. There’s no fault in continuing one’s education, and becoming more qualified when the job market bounces back isn’t a bad idea. Expenses aside, it’s a smart alternative to tearing hair out searching for a job. So maybe today’s college graduateUGG Upside doesn’t know where they’re headed tomorrow. Relax, though. It’s common. And when you’re walking across that stage, walk slowly. There’s a lot to remember and be thankful for at MSU.

The assistant principal of a Queens school who had been hospitalized with swine flu died on Sunday evening. It was the first death in New York State from the outbreak and came as city officials announced that fiveAir Classic BW more Queens schools had been closed. The assistant principal, Mitchell Wiener, 55, had been “overwhelmed” by the illness despite treatment with an experimental drug, according to Ole Pedersen, a spokesman for Flushing Hospital Medical Center, where Mr. Wiener had been a patient since last Wednesday. Mr. Pedersen said that Mr. Wiener, the assistant principal of Intermediate School 238 in Hollis, one of the schools closed last week, had been on a ventilator and had slipped in and out of consciousness during his illness. One of Mr. Wiener’s three sons, Adam, said about an hour after his death that the family was too devastated to talk. “Out of respect to my family, not right now," Adam Wiener said. "We can’t talk about this right now." Officials said he might have had some health problems. His family said that he had suffered from gout but that it was under control Air Jordan shoes 5with medication. The closings announced on Sunday followed a sharp rise in the number of students at the schools who have fallen ill with flulike symptoms, brought the number of closed schools to 10 in Queens and one in Brooklyn. Jessica Scaperotti, a New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene spokeswoman, said that there were no more confirmed cases of swine flu but that the department had decided to close the schools because of “unusually high and increasing levels of influenzalike illness.” A total of 105 students were documented with flulike illness at Middle School 158 in Bayside, Our Lady of Lourdes in Queens Village and a building in Flushing that houses three schools with a total of 1,320 students, including Intermediate School 25. All of the schools will be closed beginning Monday for at least five days, the department said. “We are evaluating the situation andJordan V shoes looking at all schools in New York City and making decisions on a case-by-case basis,” Ms. Scaperotti said. Late last week, the city closed five schools in Queens and one in Brooklyn, after five cases of swine flu were confirmed, including that of Mr. Wiener. .

BAGHDAD, May 20 (Reuters) - A parked car bomb ripped through a poor Shi'ite area of northwest Baghdad on Wednesday, killing 35 peopleAir Jordan 13 and wounding 72 others near a popular restaurant, police said. Shula in northwest Baghdad was also targeted by bombers on Dec. 25 last year, killing four people. The last large-scale bomb attack in Iraq was on April 29, when 51 people were killed in twin car bomb attacks in the Shi'ite Air Max LightSadr City district of Baghdad. Security has broadly improved in Iraq since last year, but a rash of bombings in April made it the deadliest month for civilians since November. The recent attacks raises questions about whether Iraq can avoid sliding back into greater bloodshed as an untested military prepares to take greater security responsibility and U.S. troops prepare for a full withdrawal by the end of 2011. Iraqi security forces on Monday aired a video tape of a what they said was the captured leader of the so-called Islamic State of Iraq, an al Qaeda-linked organisation blamed for years of bloodshed in the country, butShox Turb OH+ SL the group has denied the claim. LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Ben Stiller beat Christian Bale in the North American weekend box office duel between their respective "Night at the Museum" and "Terminator" sequels, according to studio estimates issued on Sunday. The 20th Century Fox comedy "NightJordan basketball shoes 23 at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian" sold $53.5 million worth of tickets during the three days beginning Friday, far exceeding the $30.4 million debut of its 2006 predecessor. "Terminator Salvation" earned $43.0 million. The film fell short of the $44 million start for the previous entry in the cyborg series, 2003's "Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines," the swan song of franchise star Arnold Schwarzenegger. But the race between the two new sequels was closer than it appeared because Warner Bros. got a head start on the U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend by opening "Terminator" on Thursday, when it earned about $13.4 million. That takes the film's four-day total to $56.4 million. The studios generally try to avoid each other when they roll out their big movies. In this case, "Night at the Museum" played to a broad audience, while "Terminator" was more targeted at male moviegoers. Time Warner Inc-owned Warner Bros. said "Terminator" was likely more affected by competition for older men from the National Basketball Association playoffs, which hurt business in cities like Los Angeles. Fox, a unit of News Corp, said the "Night at the Museum" opening set a new live-action record for Stiller. The film also opened in most international markets, earning $50.5 million. Last weekend' North American champion, "Angels & Demons," slipped to No. 3 with $21.4 million, taking the 10-day total for Columbia Pictures' Tom Hanks religious thriller to $81.5 million. By contrast, its 2006 predecessor "The Da Vinci Code" had earned $136.5 million after the same period. But the Sony Corp unit has said it neverAir Jordan 20 expected the second film to be as big, and noted it that it was the top choice internationally with sales of $60.4 million. Its foreign total now stands at $198.3 million.

PHILADELPHIA -- Marlins All-Star shortstop Hanley Ramirez was removed from Tuesday night's game in the bottom of the third inning with a tight right groin. With the Phillies holding a 3-0 lead and batting withAir Jordan shoes 6 two outs in the third inning, play was stopped. Marlins assistant trainer Mike Kozak trotted on the field, checking on the status of Ramirez. Ramirez walked slowly off the field, and headed to the clubhouse. What went wrong appeared to have happened in the top of the third inning, when Ramirez beat out an infield single. On the play, he tapped a grounder to shortstop Jimmy Rollins. On the bang-bang play at first, Ramirez was ruled safe by jordan shoes 7first-base umpire John Hirschbeck. Ramirez extended to reach the base, and on a 52-degree night at Citizens Bank Park, he exited with the groin tightness. Ramirez is batting .320 with eight home runs and 22 RBIs. Third baseman Emilio Bonifacio replaced Ramirez at shortstop, and Wes Helms entered the game at third base.

SAO PAULO (AP) — Autopsies have revealed fractures in the legs, hips and arms of Air France disaster victims, injuries that — along with the large pieces of wreckage pulled from the Atlantic — strongly suggest Air Jordan 3the plane broke up in the air, experts said Wednesday. With more than 400 bits of debris recovered from the ocean's surface, the top French investigator expressed optimism about discovering what brought down Flight 447, but he also called the conditions — far from land in very deep waters — "one of the worst situations ever known in an accident investigation." French investigators are beginning to form "an image that is progressively less fuzzy," Paul-Louis Arslanian, who runs the French air accident investigation agency BEA, told a news conference outside Paris. "We are in a situation that is a bit more favorable than the first days," Arslanian said. "We can say there is a little less uncertainty, so there is a little more optimism. ... (but) it is premature for the time being to say what happened." A spokesman for Brazilian medical examiners told The Associated Press on Wednesday that fractures were found in autopsies on lv damier canvaslan undisclosed number of the 50 bodies recovered so far. The official spoke on condition he not be named due to department rules. "Typically, if you see intact bodies and multiple fractures — arm, leg, hip fractures — it's a good indicator of a midflight break up," said Frank Ciacco, a former forensic expert at the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. "Especially if you're seeing large pieces of aircraft as well." The pattern of fractures was first reported Wednesday by Brazil's O Estado de S. Paulo newspaper, which cited unnamed investigators. The paper also reported that some victims were found with little or no clothing, and had no signs of burns. That lack of clothing could be significant, said Jack Casey, an aviation safety consultant in Washington, D.C., who is a former accident investigator. "In an in-air break up like we are supposing here, the clothes are just torn away." Casey also said multiple fractures are consistent with a midair breakup of the plane, which was cruising at about 34,500 feet (10,500 meters) when it went down. "Getting ejected into that kind of windstream is like hitting a brick wall — even if they stay in their seats, it is a crushing effect," Casey said. "Most of them were long dead before they hit the water would be my guess." When a jet crashes into water mostly intact — such as the Egypt Air plane that hit the Atlantic Ocean after taking off from New York in 1999 — debris and bodies are generally broken into small pieces, Ciacco said. "When you've had impact in the water, there is a lot more fragmentation of the bodies. They hit the water with a higher force." Lack of burn evidence would not necessarily rule out an explosion, said John Goglia, a former member of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board. If something caused the lower fuselage to burn or explode, "passengers would not be exposed to any blast damage" and the plane would still disintegrate in flight," Goglia said. "These are scenarios that cannot be ruled out." Searchers from Brazil, France, the United States and other countries are methodically scanning the surface and depths of the Atlantic for signs of the Airbus A330 that crashed May 31 after running into thunderstorms en route from Rio de Janeiro to Paris. All 228 people aboard were killed. Brazilian Air Force Col. Henry Munhoz said in a news conference Wednesday that several body parts, as well as pieces of the plane and luggage were found in the search area by the French amphibian ship, Mistral. Munhoz did not provide further details, and Brazilian Capt. Giucemar Tabosa Cardoso said "a significant" number of body parts had Air Max 03been retrieved from the ocean. Still missing are the plane's flight data and voice recorders, thought to be deep under water. French-chartered ships are trolling a search area with a radius of 50 miles (80 kilometers), pulling U.S. Navy underwater listening devices attached to 19,700 feet (6,000 meters) of cable. The black boxes send out an electronic tapping sound that can be heard up to 1.25 miles (2 kilometers) away, but these locator beacons will begin to fade after just two more weeks. U.S. Air Force Col. Willie Berges, commander of the American military forces supporting the search, said the black boxes emit beacons at a unique frequency, virtually guaranteeing that any signal detected would be from the pingers. "The question becomes if the black box is with the pinger, because they can get separated," Berges said. "If a signal is located, the French would then send down a robotic vehicle that is in the area to look at it, confirm that it is the black box and bring it up." Without the black boxes to help explain what went wrong, the investigation has focused on a flurry of automated messages sent by the plane minutes before it lost contact; one suggests external speed sensors had iced over, destabilizing the plane's control systems. Arslanian said most of the messages appear to be "linked to this loss of validity of speed information." He said when the speed information became "incoherent" it affected other systems on the plane that relied on that speed data. But he stressed that not all the automated messages were related to the speed sensors. The automated messages were not alarm calls and no distress call was picked up from the plane, he said. Air France has replaced the sensors, called Pitot tubes, on all its A330 and A340 aircraft, under pressure from pilots who feared a link to the accident. Arslanian said a French doctor from the BEA was not allowed to participate in autopsies done so far on some Flight 447 bodies by Brazilian authorities, and those autopsy results have not been released to the BEA. He said he was "not happy" with this situation. However, he added that French judicial authorities, who are conducting a parallel criminal probe, were present at the autopsies. Brazil's Federal Police and state Shox BB4medical authorities in Recife who are overseeing the autopsies said in a statement that two French investigators, a dental expert and a doctor, had been following the examinations as observers since June 10. The French are leading the crash investigation, while the Brazilians are leading the rescue operation.

TIJUANA, Mexico – Drug dealer Hector Rodriguez Estrada had a feeling he was next. His boss was beaten to death and dumped in an empty lot, his teeth and fingers missing. Then one of Rodriguez's underlings Shox TL 4turned up in a soccer field, his head next to his body. Rodriguez, 30, knew his enemies could only get him if he was asleep or high. But the thought made the longtime addict, who sold methamphetamine in his eastern Tijuana neighborhood, more jittery than usual. "He felt like something was about to happen," said his mother, Maria de la Luz Estrada. With good reason. Much attention is given Mexican drug cartels warring over lucrative transport routes to the U.S. But more and more, they're battling for an exploding number of Mexican consumers, a market that barely existed a decade ago. While the U.S. is expected to remain the largest and most-coveted market, local consumers are a big and rapidly growing source of cash. That makes street dealers like Rodriguez prime targets for assassins. Low-level sellers are easy prey for rivals seeking to expand turf, because they work openly on street corners without bodyguards or armored cars. Drug dealers account for many of the 10,800 people killed since Mexican President Felipe Calderon began a crackdown on cartels in 2006 — particularly in border cities where the battles are fiercest. In Tijuana, they fill at least 90 percent of the body bags, according to top law enforcement officials. It's much like gang warfare over drugs in the U.S., said Rafael Reyes, the Drug Enforcement Administration's chief of enforcement Air Jordan 3 for Mexico and Central America. "You have the Bloods and the Crips battling over drug turf," he said. Rodriguez fit the profile for his line of work, the third of four children from a poor Tijuana family. His mother sold clothes on the street. His father, plagued by mental illness, worked in the U.S. but sent little money home. On the streets where Rodriguez grew up — and came to control drug sales — he was known as "the Russian" for his curly red hair, or "Freckles," a natural fighter who began smoking marijuana around age 12 and shooting heroin three years later. He was in and out of prison for petty crimes. To De la Luz, he was her favorite child, helping to pay her electric bills and bringing her flowers on Mother's Day, even after she moved away from the family home. He was the kid who wanted things to be different. "I'm going to work hard so that you don't have to struggle and your house has everything," he told his mother. "He was the only one who helped me," she said. But livelihood for someone like Rodriguez means drug dealing, which is all around the aging, graffiti-strewn homes, office buildings and maquiladoras — assembly plants for manufactured goods headed to the United States. "When you live by the sea, you look for fish," said Samuel Rodriguez, his older brother. "It's work." No one knows to what extent Mexican consumers account for the billions of dollars the country's drug gangs collect annually. A crackdown on meth production in the U.S. during the 1990s spawned labs in Mexico, where drug gangs found a natural market, experts say. Heightened U.S. border security after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks only encouraged cartels to expand sales at home. Mexico counted 460,000 drug addicts in a preliminary government survey last year, up more than 50 percent from 2002, a figure that will likely rise when the revised tally is released. Rodriguez started his business in the two-bedroom, prefab home where the family lived for 24 years. Samuel Rodriguez said his younger brother aspired to be like the Arellano Felix brothers, the Tijuana-based founders of one of Mexico's most notorious drug cartels. His stints in prison put him in touch with important drug runners, and he used his contacts to move up from corner dealing to managing a handful of dealers when he got out. Low-level dealers make about $20 a day on 100 hits of methamphetamine, said Julian Leyzaola, Tijuana's public safety secretary. Many opt to be paid in drugs instead to support their habits. But that's still a handsome wage in hardscrabble neighborhoods where bricklayers earn the equivalent of $5 a day and factory workers make $60 a week, said the Rev. Raymundo Reyna, a popular Tijuana radio host whose Roman Catholic church is in an area hit hard by murderous drug gangs. Drug peddlers drive cars with music blaring and splurge on new clothes and cowboy boots. "It's a status symbol that I now have money," Reyna said. "Look, I have a car. I have a watch." Rodriguez lived modestly, shunning restaurants and fancy clubs. He gave his family a few pesos here and there, and drove an oldAir Jordan 2 pickup truck for a long time before trading up to a used, late 1990s Ford Taurus. "He never had money in his pocket," said his father, Jose Francisco Rodriguez Ruiz. After Rodriguez finished his last jail stint, this time for a home invasion, the drug war was heating up in Tijuana. It was early 2008. The Arellano Felix gang had split into warring factions after the founding brothers were arrested or killed, and troops sent by Calderon tried to exploit the leadership void. Two rivals emerged: Fernando Sanchez Arellano of the Arrellano Felix family and Teodoro Garcia Simental, a renegade lieutenant who broke away in an April 2008 shootout that left 14 dead. Garcia, known as "El Teo," was more zealous than Sanchez about killing street-corner peddlers as he tried to solidify his control of eastern Tijuana, said Gen. Alfonso Duarte Mugica, the Mexican army commander who oversees Tijuana. The rivalry caused many of the 443 murders during the last three months of last year. Bodies were often left scrawled with messages to the opposing gang: "Here are your people, pick them up." "They are the economic foundation," Leyzaola said of the small-time dealers. "If you want to knock down a building ... you hit the ground floor, and the building will fall." Twelve corpses — seven without tongues — showed up in September across from a school not far from Rodriguez's house. Nine severed heads turned up in a nearby empty lot in November, their eyes and mouths wrapped in tape. "It smelled like a graveyard," Samuel Rodriguez said of the neighborhood. Rodriguez's family didn't know who he worked for, other than "Gabi," the boss who turned up dead last year without fingers or teeth. Often the dealers don't know who they work for, either. The family only saw Rodriguez grow more paranoid, looking over his shoulder frequently and asking his mother if she saw anything behind him. By December, just after one of his associates turned up without a head, Rodriguez talked about quitting drugs altogether. His new girlfriend, Arecely Lizarraga Lopez, 28, was pregnant with his first child, and Rodriguez was excited. He introduced her to his mother, saying, "What do you think of her? I'm going to get married." De la Luz, who had left the family home, moved back to a vacant house across the street with her husband and youngest son, Miguel, to keep an eye on Rodriguez. At 1 a.m. on Jan. 10, she crossed the street to check on her son. He told her he was tired and walked her back home. Around 5 a.m., Miguel Rodriguez heard several bangs but paid little attention. Later that morning, the family found Rodriguez just as he had predicted. He was shot dead in his sleep, along with his pregnant girlfriend, their blood spattering the walls of the sun-starved bedroom. His car and wallet were gone. His associates milled in the living room. Rodriguez's mother suspects it was someone he knew. There was no sign of forced entry, even though her son in his paranoia had installed a lock on his bedroom door. The police report said four bullet shells from a 9mm handgun and one from a .38-caliber pistol were found on the floor. There has been no word on the investigation since then. There are advantages to letting the carnage continue unabated, some law enforcement officials say — division and instability among the ranks make it easier to arrest the big guys. "Turbulent waters make for good fishing," Leyzaola said. "They were killing, and we were picking people up." The family held a small, memorial service in the living room of the home where Rodriguez died. They buried him at Municipal Cemetery No. 12 on the edge of Tijuana's urban sprawl. Rodriguez's parents remain in the house across the street, where the faded drapes are torn and they keep a broken television and stereo for decoration. His father is now an auto mechanic, bringing home $15 on his best days. His mother rarely leaves the house and sleeps with a metal pipe at her side. Miguel Rodriguez moved with his girlfriend into his brother's house, where a "Scarface" beach towel hangs in the living room — but not into his bedroom, where the walls are still stained with blood. Samuel Rodriguez, who is married with five children and lives across town, says he inherited his brother's business. Rodriguez's tomb is a few steps from 100 unnamed graves, many of them victims of recent drug violence who were unclaimed by family or friends. Others sites are adorned with brightly painted wood crosses and plastic soda bottles filled with flowers. The family hopes to buy a sturdyShox Electric tombstone but can't afford one now. So Rodriguez is buried with a turquoise-colored wooden cross and a hand-painted epitaph: "You will always be remembered, Freckles."

TAKILMA, Ore. – On a steep slope of the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest, a crew of young men with chain saws and hardhats worked their way through an old neglected clearcut, cutting brush and young trees Shox R4nd piling the remains to be burned later. Freshly trained and closely supervised, the crew took care to leave behind volunteer sproutings of dogwood, madrone and huckleberry as well as the sugar pine and Douglas fir planted here 20 years ago. The pattern is designed to grow into a healthy forest less vulnerable to wildfire and better for fish and wildlife, rather than just turn out timber. The House Hope Stewardship Project, taken off the shelf with $1.4 million from President Barack Obama's economic stimulus package, will thin and restore 890 acres. It's a tiny fraction of the 60 million to 80 million acres the U.S. Forest Service estimates need such attention nationwide, but people here feel as if this is a start — not only to grappling with the growing threat of wildfire in a warming climate, but in healing rifts between environmentalists, the timber industry and the Forest Service that have left the national forests in limbo. "I wouldn't go so far as to say there is peace in the valley, but we are closer than ever before," said Shane Jimerfield, director of the Siskiyou Project, a local conservation group that grew out of the protests. The national forests of the Northwest became a crucial national lumber source after World War II when the baby boom fueled a huge demand for new houses. But by the 1980s scientists began to worry that species like the northern spotted owl and some salmon were headed for extinction due to a loss of habitat. Environmentalists won court orders Air Jordan 4 stopping that logging, and the Clinton administration came up with the Northwest Forest Plan in 1994, which cut logging by more than 80 percent and set aside huge areas for fish and wildlife habitat. After President George W. Bush was elected in 2000 his administration tried to dismantle the Northwest Forest Plan and increase logging but was repeatedly blocked by more court rulings. Few of the thinning crew were even born when the Klamath Mountains of southwestern Oregon and Northern California became ground zero in the Northwest timber wars. This is the first place Earth First! protesters ever put their bodies on the line to stop logging in old growth forests, at a place called Bald Mountain. As the battles moved from tree sitting to courtrooms, little national forest timber went to the mills, and thinning projects were scattered and not focused around the homes they were supposed to protect. Now, another corner has been turned. The landscape here offers a hint of how national forests around the country might look as a result of a new focus on preventing wildfires and global warming, and enhancing fish and wildlife habitat. Environmentalists are welcoming the sound of chain saws helping to reduce fire danger and restore ecosystem balance, and they're not alone. The last sawmill standing in the area has adopted green certification because it makes sense for its struggling bottom line, and the local forest ranger has 10 years of work planned out covering 10,000 acres — including timber sales that will provide logs for the mill — without a single protest, appeal or lawsuit to stop them. Siskiyou Project and Lomakatsi, a forest restoration outfit, have signed a groundbreaking contract with the Forest Service to cooperate not only to restore forests, but to provide logs to feed sawmills and biomass to fuel the lumber drying kilns and biomass generators they have built while adapting to a greener economy. "If what you are doing isn't working and we keep doing it, it is a definition of insanity," said Joel King, ranger for the Wild Rivers Ranger District. "So I needed to do something different. "The way the Forest Service looks at it, we are doing forest restoration, and if wood products come out of that, why not?" It seems inevitable, he said, that the approach here will spread. The folks at the Rough & Ready Lumber Co. mill in O'Brien, the last mill in the Illinois Valley, haven't been able to buy a log from the national forest that surrounds them since 1997, depending instead on logs from private lands. Neither have they been able to buy trimmings from thinning projects to fuel a co-generation plant they built a couple years ago to power lumber drying kilns and produce renewable electricity. To tap into California markets demanding lumber that qualifies for green building codes, Rough & Ready this year had its pine production stream certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, the model embraced by environmentalists, rather than a competing one created by the timber industry. With demand for energy-efficient homes growing, the mill is kiln-drying more of its Douglas fir lumber. That means fewer mold problems in tightly built houses, and less weight to haul in trucks. A co-generation plant fueled by milling scraps and forest thinnings powers the drying kiln, and produces electricity that goes back into the grid. "This is all great, the co-gen plant and drying lumber," said Jennifer Phillippi, the third generation of her family to run Rough & Ready, and a member of the Oregon Board of Forestry. "But we still need logs to run the mill. I just hope we figure it out before things get too bad in the forest. It's really not a sustainable model the way it is." No one is more aware of that than King. For the past decade, forest fires have been getting bigger and hotter and more expensive to put out, and he expects that trend to continue as summers get longer and hotter with global warming. And there are more houses in the woods to worry about. Besides the costs and danger, fires send huge amounts of carbon into the atmosphere, where they contribute to the greenhouse effect. To illustrate the challenge, King shows a visitor adjacent stands of trees. On one side of a logging road is a Air Jordan 3stand of spindly pine and fir so close together you can't walk through them, covered with scars from insect and fungus damage. Across the road, where the thinning crew is at work, a young sugar pine shoots out new growth in every direction. Nearby a huge dead Douglas fir is riddled with holes from feeding woodpeckers, and dogwoods bloom. "It's right before our eyes," said King. "These forests built our courthouses, our schools, our homes. We have that responsibility to make it sustainable." The stakes are high. Last year he spent $6 million in two weeks putting out a fire that burned through 1,000 acres. Before he took over, the Biscuit fire burned through 500,000 acres in 2002 and cost more than $150 million to put out. King views the decades of conflict between tree sitters and loggers as a necessary stage before this move toward resolution could happen. "Without that energy level, without that passion and caring, we can't do this," he said. The Obama administration has not strongly signaled where it intends to point forest policy, though it has called a time-out on the Bush administration's efforts to log and mine in untouched parts of national forests known as roadless areas. It is also reviewing whether to defend in court a plan to ramp up logging in western Oregon. Longtime observers of national forest policy, like Takilma resident Mark Kelz, are used to big swings in forest policy, but looking forward to some consistency. Kelz moved here in 1970, working on a tree-planting crew, and now makes his living making Adirondack-style backpacks of woven ash splints. He lives at The Meadows, a community of four families living off the grid and growing their own food on an old hydraulic gold-mining site. They can see some of the restoration thinning sites on old clearcuts on the hills around them; in 1987, they watched the Longwood fire burn toward their homes. "I'm kind of hopeful and kind of skeptical too, because there've been a lot of fashions in forestry over the years," said Kelz. "For a while, they were hiring us to go clean the logs out of the streams (to improve salmon habitat). They would pay us to do it. A few years later, they were hiring us to throw the same wood back into the streams. "Then there was the monoculture," where nothing but Douglas fir and pine would be planted in clearcuts to maximize the timber yield in coming years. He added: "Now they are like, `We Shox 2:45need diversity. It's not healthy.' They've learned a lot, but they still have a lot to learn."

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - Honduras has confirmed its first H1N1 swine flu death, a 23-year-old pregnant woman, the healthAir jordan II sneaker ministry said on Monday. Minister Carlos Aguilar told a news conference the woman lived in a rural area in western Honduras. She died in mid-June but authorities only now confirmed the cause was the H1N1 flu which the World Health Organization has classified as a pandemic. The largely poor Central American nation has reported 118 cases of the swine flu, most of them in the northwestern Sula valley area, home to most of the country's industry. The flu first broke out in nearby Jordan basketball shoes 1Mexico in late April and has since spread to dozens of countries, killing 180 people and infecting nearly 45,000 people.

CAIRO (AP) — Overwhelmed by police and left with limited alternatives, Iranian demonstrators resorted Tuesday to more subtle ways ofNike Air Force 1 Mid challenging the outcome of the presidential election: holding up posters, shouting from rooftops and turning on car headlights. But the restrained expressions of discontent appeared to be scattered as Iran's ruling clerics dealt the opposition new setbacks, making clear they have no intention of holding a new vote and setting up a special court to deal with hundreds of protesters arrested in more than a week of unrest. Iran also expelled two diplomats from Britain — a nation it bitterly accuses of meddling and spying — and Britain in turn sent two Iranian envoys home. The latest moves, and a fresh deployment of riot police and militia to break up any street gatherings, signaled the regime's determination to squelch dissent and mute the voices of those whose protests have been the largest since the 1979 Islamic Revolution. "People are calmly protesting, more symbolically than with their voices," a Tehran resident said in a telephone interview, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear of government retribution. No rallies were reported Tuesday. Many in Tehran seemed hesitant to confront the feared Revolutionary Guard and members of the Basij militia, suggesting the harsh response wrought by hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei to large and boisterous demonstrations may have Jordan basketball shoes 2weakened the opposition's resolve. In Tehran's sprawling Grand Bazaar market, shopkeepers said customers frightened away by the violent crackdown were venturing back outdoors. "These past few days the situation was not good," said a vendor who gave his name only as Ali because he feared retaliation. "People were scared because there was not any security and people didn't come out. But thank God, in the past two or three days the situation has gotten much better and business is good." Severe restrictions on reporters have made it almost impossible to independently verify reports on demonstrations, clashes and casualties. Iran has ordered journalists for international news agencies to stay in their offices, barring them from reporting on the streets. President Barack Obama said the world was "appalled and outraged" at Tehran's use of violence, and other nations expressed grave concerns as the standoff fueled an increasingly acrimonious international dispute on how to engage Iran — a country the U.S. and its allies have accused of covertly trying to build a nuclear weapon. "I have made it clear that the United States respects the sovereignty of the Islamic Republic of Iran, and is not interfering in Iran's affairs," Obama said. "But we must also bear witness to the courage and dignity of the Iranian people, and to a remarkable opening within Iranian society. And we deplore violence against innocent civilians anywhere that it takes place." Iran's Foreign Ministry said it expelled the two Britons for "unconventional behavior," state television reported without elaborating. Tensions between Iran and Britain, which has urged the Islamic regime to respect human rights, have soared in recent days. During Friday prayers at Tehran University, Khamenei lashed out against Western countries he said were displaying their "enmity" against the Islamic state, "and the most evil of them is the British government." Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has accused Britain of sending spies to manipulate the June 12 election. Iran's expulsions came a day after Britain sent home a dozen dependents of diplomatic staff because of the unrest. "I am disappointed that Iran has placed us in this position but we will continue to seek good relations with Iran and to call for the regime to respect the human rights and democratic freedoms of the Iranian people," said British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. About 100 hard-line students protested outside the British Embassy in Tehran, where they burned U.S., British and Israeli flags, pelted the building with tomatoes, and chanted: "Down with Britain!" and "Down with USA!" state TV reported. Iran also accused U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon of interfering in its domestic affairs. Ban told the Associated Press on Tuesday that the "Iranian government must stop the arrest of these people and protect the civilians, and also protect the freedom of assembly, freedom of expression and freedom of information." Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi says he was the true winner of the election. Iran's electoral commission declared Ahmadinejad the winner by a landslide, ignoring Mousavi's claims of widespread and systematic vote fraud. Mousavi has been out of sight in recent days, but a short message posted on his Web site asserted that "all the reports of violations in the elections will be published soon." State TV reported that Ahmadinejad would be sworn in sometime between July 26 and Aug. 19. Another opposition figure, reformist presidential candidate Mahdi Karroubi, called for a day of mourning for at least 17 people killed in protests since the election. Some social networking sites suggested that the mourning would take place Thursday. Amid the crackdown, there was one small concession Tuesday from Khamenei, whose word is law in the Islamic Republic. State TV said he agreed to extend by five days a deadline for registering complaints about the election. Yet the regime made it clear that it stood by the results and there would be no rerun of the disputed vote. State-run Press TV quoted Abbas AliAir Jordan 2 Kadkhodaei, the spokesman for Iran's top electoral body, the Guardian Council, as saying it found "no major fraud or breach in the election." "Therefore, there is no possibility of an annulment taking place," he was quoted as saying. On Monday, the council had acknowledged in a rare step that it found voting irregularities in 50 of 170 districts, including ballot counts that exceeded the number of eligible voters. Still, it said the discrepancies, involving some 3 million votes, were not widespread enough to affect the outcome. Iran has 46.2 million eligible voters, one-third of them under 30. The final tally gave 62.6 percent of the vote to Ahmadinejad and 33.75 percent to Mousavi, a landslide victory in a race that was perceived to be much closer. The huge margin went against the expectation that the record 85 percent turnout would help Mousavi. In a boost for the regime, Russia said Tuesday it respects the outcome. Russia, a permanent member of the U.N. Security Council, has longtime political and economic ties with Iran, where it is helping build a nuclear power plan at Bushehr. In his only trip abroad since the vote, Ahmadinejad went to Russia last week for a conference, where he met with Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Meanwhile, Ebrahim Raisi, a top judicial official, said a special court has been set up to deal with detained protesters. "Elements of riots must be dealt with to set an example. The judiciary will do that," he was quoted as saying by state-run radio. The judiciary is controlled by Iran's ruling clerics. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, visiting Rome, praised the courage of Iranian protesters "in facing bullets in the streets." Two prominent Iranian opposition figures took their case to Europe on Tuesday. Iranian Nobel Peace laureate Shirin Ebadi asked European Union officials in Brussels not to negotiate or hold meetings with Iranian leaders until the crackdown stops. Ban said he also spoke Ebadi by telephone Tuesday. In Rome, Iranian filmmaker Mohsen Makhmalbaf said he had been asked by Mousavi aides to spread the word on what is happening in Iran. Makhmalbaf said that even if Ahmadinejad manages to govern for the next four years, "he will not have one day of quietness," with protesters resorting to general strikes and civil resistance. A number of journalists have been detained since the protests began, although there have been conflicting accounts. The Paris-based Reporters Without Borders put the figure of reporters detained at 34. The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists said 13 were in custody, including Newsweek correspondent Maziar Bahari. State-run TV confirmedShox hot sell the arrest of Iason Athanasiadis, a Greek national reporting for the Washington Times.

Iraqi police say 72 people have been killed in a bomb blast in Baghdad, less than a week before U.S. troops are to withdraw from Iraq's urban areas. More than 160 people were nike shox r3injured in Wednesday's blast, which tore through a market in the mostly Shi'ite district of Sadr City. Officials say the attacker hid the bomb under a cart of vegetables loaded on a motorcycle. In other violence, officials say one person was killed and at least 14 wounded in two other attacks in the Iraqi capital. A U.S. Defense Department spokesman said Wednesday a rise in violence is expected as U.S. combat forces prepare to withdraw from Iraqi cities on June 30. But he noted the overall security climate is good. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has also warned that insurgents are likely to intensify their strikes. Earlier this week, a series of attacksShox 2:45 in Iraq left dozens dead, and a truck bombing last Saturday near Kirkuk killed almost 70 people.

WASHINGTON – Senators working to give President Barack Obama a comprehensive health care overhaul said Thursday they had figured out how to pare back the complex legislation to keep costs from crashing through a $1 trillion, 10-year ceiling. The announcement from Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus, D-Mont., and other lawmakers amounted to a small, parting gift to Obama on his top domestic priority as Congress prepares to leave town for its weeklong Shox BB4July 4 recess. It moved Congress a bit closer to a deal on legislation to lower costs and provide coverage to nearly 50 million Americans who lack it. It also capped two weeks of tough going for health care negotiations on Capitol Hill as price tags as high as $1.6 trillion over 10 years sent senators back to the drawing board and forced deadlines to be repeatedly reset. "We have options that would enable us to write a $1 trillion bill, fully paid for," Baucus said at a news conference. Baucus declined to detail how the costs were being cut, but options included difficult sacrifices like potentially delaying an expansion of Medicaid, the federal-state program for the poor. Others have said the changes made in recent days would lower the cost of government subsidies for those who cannot afford insurance, as well as pare back a planned 10-year series of rate increases for doctors serving Medicare patients. Aides said the Congressional Budget Office had estimated that the elements under consideration would extend coverage to 97 percent of the population, excluding illegal immigrants. But even Democrats acknowledged that Thursday's announcement fell fall short of a final deal on legislation to meet Obama's goals. "There's not a final bill that's agreed to. What there is now is a clear path to having a bill that is paid for," said Sen. Kent Conrad, D-N.D., one of seven Republican and Democratic Finance Committee senators who've been Nike Men Air Force 1 Highworking closely on the deal. Baucus has dubbed the group "the coalition of the willing." All seven issued a brief, joint statement later Thursday claiming progress, even though some Republicans involved made no secret of their skepticism. "We have not seen language (of legislation) in any way shape or form," said Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah. He questioned how costs could be cut before bill language was written, calling it "gimmickry." The Finance Committee had hoped to pass a bill by now, but given the setbacks of recent weeks Thursday's announcement was seen as progress. Of the five House and Senate panels writing health care bills, Finance is the only one with a real chance of producing a bipartisan bill, something Obama has repeatedly said he wants. The committee will resume work when lawmakers return to Washington after July 4. On Thursday they discussed whether to give more power to MedPAC, a commission that makes recommendations to Congress on Medicare payment rates, Baucus said. The House also will continue work on a partisan bill that embraces Democratic priorities, and similar legislation is taking shape in the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. Health Committee lawmakers Thursday defeated an amendment offered by Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., that would have allowed cheaper prescription drugs to be imported from Canada. All the bills envision new requirements for all Americans to have health insurance, and prohibitions against insurance companies denying people care. Still unsettled are the divisive questions of whether to create a new public plan to compete against private insurers, and what types of requirements employers should face to offer coverage to their workers. Across from the Capitol on Thursday, hundreds of people, including actress Edie Falco, rallied for a health care overhaul. Organizing for America, Obama's politicalAir Jordan 3 operation within the Democratic National Committee, plans thousands of service events around the country Saturday aimed at building support for health care overhaul among a restive public wary of higher costs, lower quality and a giant price tag.

Reporting from Dubai, United Arab Emirates -- Thousands of Iranians disputing the reelection of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad marched at an unauthorized rally Sunday, defying truncheon-wielding security forces and direLambert and butler cigarettes threats by Iranian leaders. Meanwhile, European leaders' hackles were raised by the arrest a day earlier of eight British Embassy staffers in Tehran, a move that has sharpened Iran's confrontation with the West over the disputed election and its violent aftermath. Several of the staffers, all Iranian nationals, were quickly released. Videos on YouTube purported to show demonstrators with hands in the air in front of the Ghoba mosque, chanting boisterously in support of Mousavi. According to a witness who has previously provided accurate information to The Times, numerous opposition figures attended the rally, including presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi; Mousavi's wife, Zahra Rahnavard; and both the daughter and wife of Ayatollah Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, a Mousavi supporter. The witness said pro-government Basiji militiamen and plainclothes security officials on motorcycles surrounded the rally and that Mousavi himself addressed the gathering by cellphone, which was attached to a megaphone, but the witness could not hear what he said. Protesters flashed victory signs as they filled the mosque and surrounding side streets. A female protester, covered completely by a black chador, taunted some of the police. "Who are you?" she demanded, according Air jordan XIXto the witness. "Are you Muslims?" Dumbfounded security officials stood and watched, the witness said. Iran accused the local British Embassy staff members of "playing major parts" in the recent unrest over the election, which many Iranians and independent experts consider fraudulent, according to a report by Fars, a pro-Ahmadinejad news agency. All eight embassy employees arrested were members of the mission's political section, a source said. Some were released after preliminary investigations, but some will remain in custody, the official Islamic Republic News Agency reported. "The British Embassy played a crucial role in the recent unrest both through its local staff and via media," the news agency quoted the minister of intelligence and security, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, as saying Sunday. "We have photos and videos of certain local employees of the British Embassy who collected news about the protests." He accused the embassy of fueling the unrest by dispatching staff to rallies and spreading anti-government propaganda. Foreign ministers of European states, gathered for a European Union conference in Greece, quickly condemned the arrests. Although the U.S. has not had diplomatic relations with Iran since shortly after the 1979 Islamic Revolution, France, Italy, Germany and Britain maintain robust diplomatic missions in Tehran. "Harassment or intimidation of foreign or Iranian staff working in embassies will be met with a strong and collective EU response," said a statement issued by the foreign ministers. Authorities with a search warrant detained at least one of the embassy staffers at his home Saturday morning. He was brought back to his apartment later in the evening, and authorities seized computers and documents. British Foreign Secretary David Miliband condemned the arrest and continued detention of "hardworking" embassy staff. "This is harassment and intimidation of a kind that is quite unacceptable," he said in an interview on BBC. "We want to see [them] released unharmed." Britain expelled two Iranian diplomats from London last week after Tehran booted two British diplomats. Iranian authorities also ordered a BBC correspondent out of Tehran and arrested a British-Greek journalist. In addition, Iranian authorities have targeted local United Nations staffers. Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Air Jordan 19appealed for unity in comments broadcast Sunday on state television. "I urge both sides not to provoke the sentiments of the youth and refrain from pitting people against each other," he said in an address to judiciary officials. "This united nation should not be divided, and groups should not be provoked to act against each other. There are legal ways for resolving issues."

June 30 (Bloomberg) -- Crude oil traded little changed above $71 after rising yesterday when an attack by Nigerian militants Monte Carlo Cigarettesshut a field operated by Royal Dutch Shell Plc, reducing output from Africa’s largest producer. Shell said it closed the Estuary field near the Forcados export terminal after the assaults. Oil is poised for a quarterly gain of 44 percent, the biggest since 1990. The International Energy Agency, an adviser to 28 developed nations, lowered its five-year forecast for global crude demand because of the economic slump. “Nigeria exports roughly 2 million barrels a day of crude oil, which is not a huge percent of global supply, but any disruption to global supplies will cause prices to go up,” said Mike Sander, an investment adviser with Sander Capital in Seattle. Crude oil for August delivery fell 3 cents to $71.46 on the New York Mercantile Exchange at 8:59 a.m. in Sydney. Yesterday, the contract gained $2.33, or 3.4 percent, to settle at $71.49 a barrel, the highest closeMore cigarettes since June 12. Hostilities in the Niger River delta have cut more than 20 percent of the country’s oil exports since 2006. Shell closed the Estuary field after attacks on production wells, Tony Okonedo, a spokesman, said by phone from Lagos yesterday. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta said it attacked the field. Rejected Amnesty The militant group on June 25 rejected an amnesty proposal from President Umaru Yar’Adua, saying the offer failed to address key issues. Under the terms, fighters in the Niger River delta have until Oct. 4 to surrender their weapons, renounce violence and accept rehabilitation to avoid prosecution. A U.S. government report will probably show that crude-oil inventories dropped for the seventh time in eight weeks. Supplies slipped 1.6 million barrels in the week ended June 26, according to the median of nine estimates by analysts surveyed by Bloomberg News. The Energy Department is scheduled to release its weekly report tomorrow at 10:30 a.m. in Washington. The IEA cut its oil-consumption estimates for every year through 2013 by about 3 million barrels a day, the agency said in the Medium-Term Oil Market Report yesterday. Consumption will average 86.76 million barrels a day in 2012, the first year demand will rise above 2008’s level of 85.76 million, according to the Paris-based agency. Gasoline for July delivery climbed 6.17 cents, or 3.3 percent, to $1.9358 a gallon in New York, the highest settlement since June 18. It was the biggest one-day increase since May 18. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries is unlikely to raise output at the group’s next meeting in September, oil ministers from Algeria and Qatar said yesterday. “It would be very difficult to think of an increase in production at this stage” as the market is “oversupplied,” Chakib Khelil, Algeria’s oil minister, told reporters in Doha, where he and Qatari minister Abdullah bin Hamad Shox Electrical-Attiyah are attending the Gas Exporting Countries Forum. Brent crude oil for August settlement yesterday rose $2.07, or 3 percent, to $70.99 a barrel on London’s ICE Futures Europe exchange, the biggest gain since June 4.

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Alaskans can put away their dust masks and spare air filters, for now, because Mount Redoubt seems to have cooled Air Jordan 13off since its last major eruption nearly three months ago. The Alaska Volcano Observatory said Tuesday that seismic activity has slowed under the volcano and it's possible that eruptions have stopped. The observatory lowered its alert levels for the mountain 106 miles southwest of Anchorage. A series of eruptions beginning in March disrupted air traffic and dusted Anchorage, the Kenai Peninsula and Gov. Sarah Palin's hometown of Wasilla with volcanic ash. Based on past events, geologists said eruptions could last for months, but Redoubt's last significant blast was April 4. Over the last three months, volcanic activity continued with the growth of a lava dome with enough material to fill 16 Louisiana Superdomes, geologist Ryan Bierma said. The bubble measures nearly 3,300 feet long, 1,500 feet wide and 656 feet tall, partly filling an old crater from a previous eruption that's about a mile long and a half mile wide. The dome grew from lava flowing out of the mountain and magma pushing up from below, Bierma said, but growth has slowed significantly. "There hasn't been much change noted since early June," he said. The volcano erupted March 22 and, in four blasts within about three hours, sent an ash plume more than 9 miles high into the air. The last significant eruption occurred April 4, when Redoubt sent an ash plume 50,000 feet intoShox TW the air. The eruption sent southcentral Alaska residents scrambling for masks and air filters to protect their lungs. Jagged ash particles have been used as an industrial abrasive. Particulate can injure skin, eyes and breathing passages and can scratch windshield glass if a motorist turns on wipers. It can also harm engines. Volcanic ash from Redoubt on Dec. 15, 1989, sent ash 150 miles away into the path of a KLM jet carrying 231 passengers. Its four engines flamed out and the jet dropped more than 2 miles before the crew was able to restart all engines and land the plane safely at Anchorage. Geologists monitored the mountain and watched as seismic activity diminished. In flights over the dome, they also detected less gas emitted. They used forward looking infrared cameras pointed at the dome to detect where cracks were occurring and where magma was close to the surface, Bierma said. The eruptions melted much of a glacier that had covered the crater, but parts of the dome are now so cool, new snow has not melted. Scientists say the dome may be unstable and could fail with little or no warning, leading to significant ash production and possible mud Air Jordan 18flows in the Drift River Valley, where an oil terminal was threatened in April.

The Organization of American States has given Honduras a 72-hour deadline for reinstatement or warned it could face suspension from the regional group. Mr Zelaya has delayed his planned Shox BB4return home on Thursday, until the deadline expires at the weekend. Interim leaders said he would be arrested for treason on his return. The army ousted Mr Zelaya on Sunday over his plans for constitutional reform, which his critics said were aimed at prolonging his presidency. Roberto Micheletti, the Speaker of Congress who was sworn in as interim president, said of the OAS deadline: "We can't negotiate anything. "We can't reach an agreement because there are orders to capture the ex-President Zelaya here for crimes he committed when he was an official." He told the Associated Press: "He can no longer return to the presidency of the republic unless a president from another Latin American country comes and imposes him using guns." The president's expulsion has been widely condemned by leaders ranging from US President Barack Obama to Mr Zelaya's regional allies, including Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez. Mr Zelaya, in Panama for the presidentialNike Air Jordan 2009 inauguration, said: "I'm going to respect those 72 hours that the OAS asked for." The US has suspended military co-operation with Honduras and says it will decide next week whether to cut aid. Mr Zelaya's decision to postpone his return was described as "wise" by a senior official from US President Barack Obama's administration, quoted by Reuters news agency. Protests The World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank have cut new loans and some European countries have recalled their ambassadors. The head of the OAS, Jose Miguel Insulza, condemned what he described as "an old-fashioned coup" in Honduras, after an emergency meeting of the regional grouping on Tuesday. "We need to show clearly that military coups will not be accepted," he said. But thousands of people demonstrated in the Air jordan XVIII capital, Tegucigalpa, against the return of the ousted leader, whose popularity has slumped in opinion polls to around 30% in recent months.

WASHINGTON — The hospital industry is close to a deal with the White House and congressional Democrats in which the industry Air Jordan 21would agree to federal funding cuts of $150 billion to $170 billion over the next decade to help pay for a health system overhaul, according to people familiar with the talks. The deal, which isn't final, could be announced within days. A critical feature is an agreement on phasing in the Medicare and Medicaid cuts. Hospitals have been objecting to President Barack Obama's proposals to slash payments over 10 years. They've been seeking assurances that cuts would occur in stages as more people get insurance under the new legislation. If the cuts were to take effect sooner, hospitals say, they'd lose billions of dollars in revenues while caring for large numbers of uninsured patients. An agreement would boost Obama's drive for comprehensive legislation by addressing the biggest concerns of one of the most influential players in the health care overhaul debate. It would provide more money to the administration and Congress to cover the uninsured. In addition, it would come at a crucial time — just as members of the House of Representatives and the Senate return from their July Fourth break. Democrats are hoping to complete floor action in both chambers before the start of the August recess. A hospital agreement would follow a recently announced deal involving the pharmaceutical industry, the White House and the Senate Finance Committee . Under that deal, which was endorsed by the powerful seniors' group, AARP , the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America said it would spend $80 billion over 10 years to expand the Medicare drug program and help defray the cost of an overhaul. The hospital negotiations involve the American Hospital Association , the Catholic Health Association , the Federation of AmericanShox TL 4 Hospitals , administration officials and congressional staff. The hospital associations and the White House declined to comment on the potential deal. Hospital costs make up the biggest slice of national health expenditures — about 31 percent of the $2 trillion spent annually. That's why hospitals are a target for Obama and Democrats searching for ways to finance the health care overhaul. Beyond the timing of payment cuts, hospitals are concerned about proposals to expand the powers of a panel that advises Congress on payment rates for hospitals. Under an Obama proposal, the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission would set the rates itself (though Congress could overrule it). Such an arrangement would make it harder for the industry to effectively lobby against payment reductions. Hospitals also have raised concerns about proposals Nike Air Jordan 2009to create a government-run insurance plan to compete with private insurers. They want to make sure that such a plan doesn't link its payment rates to Medicare rates, which are lower than those paid by private insurers.

WASHINGTON – The Bush administration built an unprecedented surveillance operation to pull in mountains of information far beyond the warrantless wiretapping previously acknowledged, a team of federal inspectors general reported Friday, questioning the legal basis for the effort but shielding almost all details on grounds they're still too secret to reveal. The report, compiled by fiveMichael Jackson Memorial inspectors general, refers to "unprecedented collection activities" by U.S. intelligence agencies under an executive order signed by President George W. Bush after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. Just what those activities involved remains classified, but the IGs pointedly say that any continued use of the secret programs must be "carefully monitored." The report says too few relevant officials knew of the size and depth of the program, let alone signed off on it. They particularly criticize John Yoo, a deputy assistant attorney general who wrote legal memos undergirding the policy. His boss, Attorney General John Ashcroft, was not aware until March 2004 of the exact nature of the intelligence operations beyond wiretapping that he had been approving for the previous two and a half years, the report says. Most of the intelligence leads generated under what was known as the "President's Surveillance Program" did not have any connection to terrorism, the report said. But FBI agents told the authors that the "mere possibility of the leads producing useful information made investigating the leads worthwhile." The inspectors general interviewed more than 200 people inside and outside the government, but five former Bush administration officials refused to be questioned. They were Ashcroft, Yoo, former CIA Director George Tenet, former White House Chief of Staff Andrew Card and David Addington, an aide to former Vice President Dick Cheney. According to the report, Addington could personallyMichael Jackson Memorial decide who in the administration was "read into" — allowed access to — the classified program. The only piece of the intelligence-gathering operation acknowledged by the Bush White House was the wiretapping-without-warrants effort. The administration admitted in 2005 that it had allowed the National Security Agency to intercept international communications that passed through U.S. cables without seeking court orders. Although the report documents Bush administration policies, its fallout could be a problem for the Obama administration if it inherited any or all of the still-classified operations. Bush started the warrantless wiretapping program under the authority of a secret court in 2006, and Congress authorized most of the intercepts in a 2008 electronic surveillance law. The fate of the remaining and still classified aspects of the wider surveillance program is not clear from the report. The report's revelations came the same day that House Democrats said that CIA Director Leon Panetta had ordered one eight-year-old classified program shut down after learning lawmakers had never been apprised of its existence. The IG report said that President Bush signed off on both Michael Jackson Memorialthe warrantless wiretapping and other top-secret operations shortly after Sept. 11 in a single presidential authorization. All the programs were periodically reauthorized, but except for the acknowledged wiretapping, they "remain highly classified." The report says it's unclear how much valuable intelligence the program has yielded. The report, mandated by Congress last year, was delivered to lawmakers Friday. Rep. Jane Harman, D-Ca., told The Associated Press she was shocked to learn of the existence of other classified programs beyond the warrantless wiretapping. Former Bush Attorney General Alberto Gonzales made a terse reference to other classified programs during an August 2007 letter to Congress. But Harman said that when she had asked Gonzales two years earlier if the government was conducting any other undisclosed intelligence activities, he denied it. "He looked me in the eye and said 'no,'" she said Friday. Robert Bork Jr., Gonzales' spokesman, said, "It has clearly been determined that he did not intend to mislead anyone." In the wake of the new report, Senate Judiciary Committee ChairmanMichael Jackson Memorial Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vt, renewed his call Friday for a formal nonpartisan inquiry into the government's information-gathering programs. Former CIA Director Michael Hayden — the primary architect of the program_ told the report's authors that the surveillance was "extremely valuable" in preventing further al-Qaida attacks. Hayden said the operations amounted to an "early warning system" allowing top officials to make critical judgments and carefully allocate national security resources to counter threats. Information gathered by the secret program played a limited role in the FBI's overall counterterrorism efforts, according to the report. Very few CIA analysts even knew about the program and therefore were unable to fully exploit it in their counterrorism work, the report said. The report questioned the legal advice used by Bush to set up the program, pinpointing omissions and questionable legal memos written by Yoo, in the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel. The Justice Department withdrew the memos years ago. The report says Yoo's analysis approving the program ignored a law designed to restrict the government's authority to conduct electronic surveillance during wartime, and did so without fully notifying Congress. And it said flaws in Yoo's memos later presented "a serious impediment" to recertifying the program. Yoo insisted that the president's wiretapping program had only to comply with Fourth Amendment protections against search and seizure — but the report said Yoo ignored the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act, which had previously overseen federal national security surveillance. "The notion that basically one person at the Michael Jackson Memorial Justice Department, John Yoo, and Hayden and the vice president's office were running a program around the laws that Congress passed, including a reinterpretation of the Fourth Amendment, is mind boggling," Harman said. House Democrats are pressing for legislation that would expand congressional access to secret intelligence briefings, but the White House has threatened to veto it.

When is it time to use medication for high cholesterol, and what are the best choices? For elevated Barry Sanders Zoom Turf triglycerides, I suggest a three-month commitment to reduce the sugar and simple starches in your diet. This means lowering consumption of foods like potatoes, white rice, pasta, and baked goods, and replacing them with smaller quantities of whole grains like brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, and bright-colored vegetables and fruits. It also means cutting down on sugary drinks, like soda. If that doesn't lower your triglycerides below 150 mg/dl, it's time to think about medications-and that's in addition to your dietary modifications, not instead! Niacin, one of the B vitamins, is an effective and appealing treatment for many people concerned about high triglycerides, because it is a fairly natural approach. Over-the-counter forms of niacin are usually not strong enough, so a high-dose prescription version is usually used. The only problem is that such high doses often cause redness and sweating in the face and upper chest (called a flushing reaction). Using a slow-release form of niacin and taking some aspirin before each dose sometimes helps. Fibrates are also useful for lowering triglycerides. The two most widely used are gemfibrozil and fenofibrate. The most common side effect is upset stomach, but most people aren't too bothered by that. Rarely, the fibrates can cause irritation of the liver, which gets better quickly when the medicine is stopped. Statins also lower triglyceride levels, but not nearly as well as niacin and fibrates. If a high LDL is your Nike air jordan IImain problem, you should reduce your dietary fat intake. If that's not good enough after three months, then I suggest taking a statin. There are several to choose from, and your doctor can help select the best one for you. Many people know that they have to avoid grapefruit when taking a statin, but there is one exception-pravastatin is not affected by grapefruit, although it is one of the weaker statins. The most common side effects are irritation of the liver or muscles, but these problems happen to less than 1 in 1,000 people taking a statin, and resolve promptly when you stop taking it. One of the most exciting things about statins is that, besides lowering your LDL level, they also appear to directly reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke. The specific reason for this is not yet understood. It is not known if any other methods of lowering cholesterol have the same kind of additional protective benefit. If a statin plus dietary change still doesn't get you to your LDL goal, you might benefit from adding ezetemibe. This medicine blocks absorption of LDL cholesterol from your intestines. It doesn't have much effect when used by itself, but ezetemibe is very powerful in combination with a statin, and monogram exoticsalmost never causes any side effects. A few other medicines are occasionally prescribed to lower cholesterol, but these four (niacin, fibrates, statins and ezetimibe) are among the best and the most commonly used. There are a few natural products advertised to lower cholesterol. The FDA issued a warning in August 2007 that two of the most common, red rice yeast and policosanol, often contain a cholesterol-lowering drug, lovastatin, as the main active ingredient. So you may be fooling yourself if you think these are safer than a prescribed statin just because they are "natural". Garlic, fish oil, and a variety of other products are sometimes advertised as lowering cholesterol, too. My general attitude is that if an alternative product or natural substance is truly harmless, I have no objection to giving Cleveland Browns Jerseysit a try. But always work with your doctor to monitor whether such products are really working and to make sure they aren't causing any side effects.

MEXICO CITY – It was the boldest, most widespread coordinated offensive ever mounted by drug traffickers against theCleveland Browns Jerseys Mexican government. Within minutes of the weekend arrest of the La Familia drug cartel's operations chief, the gang launched deadly attacks in President Felipe Calderon's home state. In the worst, 12 federal agents were killed execution-style, their tortured bodies piled along a roadside as a warning for all to see. The attacks following the weekend capture of Arnoldo Rueda spread quickly to at least 10 cities, including towns in two neighboring states. Officers' hotels were shot up. Grenades were tossed at police posts. At least 18 federal agents and two soldiers were killed in the attacks and ambushes. Nearly two dozen officers were wounded. Near the bloodied bodies of the 12 agents dumped in a heap Monday off a mountain highway near La Huacana was a message: "Let's see if you try to arrest another one." It was a blatant challenge to Calderon, who has deployed federal police and troops in an attempt to halt theNike Men Dunk High country's escalating drug trade. Calderon insists that the backlash to Rueda's arrest proves the cartel has been hurt. "The arrests of dangerous leaders by the federal government in recent months is seriously affecting their operations and generating chaos in their ranks," Calderon said. "Thus the violent and desperate reaction that we've seen these days." Government critics said the offensive revealed that federal forces are unprepared for the battle against heavily armed crime syndicates with extensive intelligence networks embedded within police forces. They also said it undermines Calderon's repeated claims that violence shows the thugs are on the run. A cartoon in the left-leaning La Jornada newspaper Wednesday depicted a bound and blindfolded policeman with a gun to his head. "Don't worry," says a tied-up colleague kneeling beside him. "It's just another desperate action by organized crime because they're cornered." Mexico's national securityNike air jordan 4 shoes spokesman, Monte Alejandro Rubido, said a La Familia suspect detained Monday told authorities gang leaders had sent an order to attack federal forces within minutes of Rueda's arrest in the Michoacan state capital of Morelia. Dozens of gunmen carrying high-powered weapons and grenades attacked the station where Rueda was held. They failed to free him, but three federal agents were wounded by grenade fragments. Convoys of other hit men fanned out across Michoacan and the neighboring states of Guerrero and Guanajuato. Assailants gunned down two soldiers riding on a bicycle in their off hours outside their base in the town of Zamora. In Apatzingan, federal agents came under fire while sleeping at a hotel in a farming town ringed by mango orchards. Others were ambushed in patrol cars on lonesome highways. Three federal agents were fatally shot as they raced to a reported car accident, which turned out to be an ambush. "This clearly shows federal forces are vulnerable," said Jorge Chabat, a Mexican drug expert. "The government needs to rethink its police protection scheme. If they don't, no one is going to want to be a police officer or soldier. There is not enough protection for them." The government has not said whether federal agents are quitting out of fear, although several towns have seen local police Nike air jordan 12leave in droves after feeling threatened. Calderon has sent an estimated 45,000 soldiers and tens of thousands of federal agents to drug hot spots — from Mexico's steamy Gulf coast to its colonial mountain villages to its desert outposts. Many wear ski masks as they ride through the towns in army vehicles and in the back of federal police pickups with their assault rifles drawn. But at the end of the day, many federal agents retire to hotels in towns so small that everyone knows everyone else's business. While soldiers stay on military bases, gunmen have picked them off when they go on leave. Experts say cartels have an extensive spy network that includes police, politicians, taxi drivers, waitresses, hotel employees and others paid to track the movements of soldiers and police. Federal forces in Michoacan arrested 10 mayors and 20 state and municipal officials in May for allegedly protecting La Familia. Many were from the towns targeted in this weekend's attacks. The success of such networks was evident in the offensive: Near the Pacific coast, gunmen fired on a private tour bus carrying federal officers who were trying to conceal their identities. The driver and one officer were wounded. The 12 federal agents whose Jordan IV shoesbloodied bodies were found Monday piled just off a mountain highway near the town of La Huacana were believed to have been kidnapped Sunday on their day off. A message left nearby read: "Let's see if you try to arrest another one." The agents were in a remote region of Michoacan to gather intelligence. Mexico's federal attorney general's office announced Wednesday the former mayor of La Huacana, who finished his term in 2007, allegedly gave information to La Familia about operations of federal forces in the area. "The government was overly confidant drug traffickers would not react so violently," said Jose Luis Pineyro, a drug expert at Mexico's National Autonomous University. "It's another sign that Calderon's strategy is flawed because it is reactive and does not try to prevent the possible hits by drug traffickers." Congressman Juan Francisco Rivera, of the Institutional Revolutionary Party, or PRI, said the United States shares the blame by feeding cartels high powered weapons bought easily north of the border. "As long as they don't suspend the indiscriminate sale of arms in 10,000 stores along the U.S. border, Mexican police and soldiers are going to keep dying," said Rivera, the head of Congress' security commission. Pineyro says the government needs Charles Barkley to rotate its forces more often, alert agents to take precautions after a major arrest and limit their movements during their off hours. Gen. Rodolfo Cruz, who oversees federal forces, said relatively few police and soldiers were killed, given the number of attacks — showing they are adequately prepared. The cartel, however, may have succeeded in convincing the public otherwise. Ciro Gomez Leyva, a columnist for Milenio newspaper, called the ambushes a "Tet offensive," referring to the offensive by the North Vietnamese army that failed but created a perception among the American public that the war could not be won. Voters showed they are growing tired of Calderon's battle by delivering a stinging loss to his National Action Party in midterm elections July 5, though it campaigned as the only party willing to take on cartels. The drug war has left more than 11,000 people dead since Calderon took office in 2006. "These attacks are demoralizing police Michael Jackson Memorial and terrorizing the population into not helping officials," Pineyro said. "The government's war is flawed."

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – An independent investigator has found evidence that Gov. Sarah Palin may have violated ethics laws Nike air jordan Iby trading on her position in seeking money for legal fees, in the latest legal distraction for the former vice presidential candidate as she prepares to leave office this week. The report obtained by The Associated Press says Palin is securing unwarranted benefits and receiving improper gifts through the Alaska Fund Trust, set up by supporters. An investigator for the state Personnel Board says in his July 14 report that there is probable cause to believe Palin used or attempted to use her official position for personal gain because she authorized the creation of the trust as the "official" legal defense fund. The practical effect of the ruling on Palin will be more financial than anything else. The report recommends that Palin refuse to accept payment from the defense fund, and that the complaint be resolved without a formal hearing before the board. Palin posted an entry on Twitter in which she said the "matter is still pending," a statement echoed by her lawyer. The fund aims to help Palin pay off lv damier canvasldebts stemming from multiple ethics complaints against her, most of which have been dismissed. Palin says she owes more than $500,000 in legal fees, and she cited the mounting toll of the ethics probes as one of the reasons she is leaving office. The investigator, Thomas Daniel, sided with Palin in her frustration with having to defend herself against a barrage of ethics complaints. He suggested that Alaska lawmakers may need to create a law that reimburses public officials for legal expenses to defend complaints that end up being unfounded. Palin's friends and supporters created the Alaska Fund Trust in April, limiting donations to $150 per person. Organizers declined to say how much it has raised, and had hoped to raise about $500,000. A Webathon last month brought in about $130,000 in pledges. Kristan Cole, the fund's trustee, said the fund has been frozen pending the personnel board's review. In his report, Daniel said his interpretation of the ethics act is consistent with common sense. An ordinary citizen facing legal charges Baltimore Ravens Jerseysis not likely to be able to generate donations to a legal defense fund, he wrote. "In contrast, Governor Palin is able to generate donations because of the fact that she is a public official and a public figure. Were it not for the fact that she is governor and a national political figure, it is unlikely that many citizens would donate money to her legal defense fund." The ethics complaint was filed by Eagle River resident Kim Chatman shortly after the fund was created, alleging Palin was misusing her official position and accepting improper gifts. "It's an absolute shame that she would continue to keep the Alaska Fund Trust Web site up and running," Chatman told the AP. At least 19 ethics complaints have been filed against Palin, most of them after she was named the running mate for GOP presidential candidate John McCain. Most of those have been dismissed, and Palin's office usually sends a news release with the announcement. The multiple ethics complaints include an investigation by state lawmakers over Palin's firing of her public safety commissioner in the so-called Troopergate scandal. John Coale, a Washington lawyer who helped Nike Men Women Air Zoom Dunkesto set up the fund, called the probable cause finding "crazy," adding that if upheld, it would mean that no governor could ever defend themselves against frivolous ethics complaints. "If this complaint is true, there's no way to defend yourself" as governor, Coale said. "Anybody can keep filing ethics complaints and drive someone out of office even if you're a nut." Coale said that unlike other states, Alaska's governor has no legal counsel's office to defend the governor from allegations brought against the governor in her official capacity. Coale said he recommended creation of the legal defense fund, a common practice in Washington. The Web site for the Palin fund cites similar accounts created for Hillary Clinton, John Kerry and other prominent politicians.

DALLAS – Scott Hintz needed more miles with American Airlines to book a free trip to Morocco this spring, and he had several Nike air jordan 2009 shoesthousand miles from another carrier that he thought might be just the ticket. The San Francisco travel executive went online, found a willing trader for his Alaska Airlines miles and made a swap. In May he was roaming North Africa. "I took miles out of some programs I don't use and got some value out of them," says Hintz, who calls himself "a miles junkie." Frequent flier programs have been around for nearly three decades and billions of miles go unused. Airlines used to prohibit swaps of frequent-flier miles — it's still in the fine print of many loyalty programs. But now some are perfectly fine with exchanges like the one that Hintz made — they collect a fee on every trade. Hintz used one of the little-known swap Web sites, Points.com, which operates like a crude stock exchange or commodities trading floor. Users list what they've got — the number of miles and in which airline — and the number of miles they want in another Nike air jordan2.5 airline. There is no charge for listing, but consumers on both ends of a completed swap pay a fee, most of which goes to the airlines. Some trades are straight-up — 10,000 miles in one airline for 10,000 at another. But some traders put a higher value on some carriers, such as Delta and American, the two largest. Another site, LoyaltyMatch.com, lets members sell miles or use them to buy merchandise. Travelers say mileage trades are a quick and convenient way to add miles in a snap. But others say they're a bad deal for consumers. Tim Winship, publisher of frequentflier.com, a Web site dedicated to the use of airline miles, says at current fares travelers get less than 2 cents per mile when they redeem their collection for a flight. "Keep that per-mile value in mind," WinshipJordan XIII shoes says. If you're paying a fee for the exchange, "then you're kidding yourself. Usually when I look at these things, it ends up being a pretty questionable value for the consumer." Points.com says its trading forum, called Global Points Exchange or GPX, levies fees that match what the airlines charge to transfer or share miles within their own programs. With American, for example, trading up to 5,000 miles costs $80, rising to $130 for 5,001 to 10,000 miles, and $180 for 10,001 to 15,000 miles. Trading Delta miles costs $30 plus a penny per mile; so exchanging 10,000 miles would cost $130. Frequent-flier programs started in the early 1980s, when Braniff and American Airlines looked for a cheap way to reward loyal customers and keep them coming back. From the beginning, airlines limited the transfer of miles. Executives at Points.com owner, Toronto-based Points International Ltd., which provides technology for many loyalty programs, told the airlines that allowing passengers to trade miles would make their programs more attractive and generate fees for the carriers. Points International President Chris Paul PierceBarnard says the trades are a good value when compared to flying a lot, putting thousands of dollars on your credit card, or spending a few nights in partner hotels to earn miles. Even critics of the trading programs see a few cases where they make sense: If you have leftover miles with an airline you rarely use; or if you are very close to earning a trip that you want to book right away. In the latter case, they say, check with the airline — it might be cheaper to simply buy the needed miles or earn them another way. One problem with the trading sites is limited participation. Points.com has signed up several big airlines, including American, Delta and Continental, but is still missing some big ones — including Southwest. "I just wish they had a few more airlines," says Hintz, the Points.com customer who is a co-founder of a travel service, noting that United and Virgin America also don't participate. Winship, the frequentflier.com publisher Nike air jordan XIXwho spent 20 years working for airline and hotel loyalty programs, also sees a downside to the trading platforms for the airlines. "If you can exchange American miles for United miles, a United customer has no more reason to fly on United than on American," Winship says. "It pulls the rug out from under the loyalty effect." It is hard to tell just how much trading is taking place. Points International declined to give figures. Several industry experts think it is still tiny compared to the billions of miles in circulation — a valid conclusion based on the listings. One day this week on Global Points Exchange, there were 39 bids for Delta miles, 19 for American miles, only five for AirTran and none for Frontier Airlines. Cashing in miles is often difficult, requiring booking flights months in advance and working around blackout dates. Even with the current travel slump, it's still hard because airlines have cut back sharply on the number of flights. Some analysts say the perception that miles are losing value could hamper trading. Barnard, the Points International New Orleans Saints jerseys executive, thinks trading miles will follow the course of swapping and selling other things online. "As they get more used to doing this in other parts of the economy," he says, "people will want to start doing this with their miles."

Jimmie Johnson cashed in on the most expensive speeding ticket in NASCAR history, grabbing an improbable third victory atJordan V shoes Indianapolis Motor Speedway when a penalty to Juan Pablo Montoya blew the race wide open. In a performance that mirrored his dominating Indianapolis 500 victory nine years ago, Montoya was in cruise control as he led 116 laps and built a 5-second lead over the competition. Then NASCAR flagged him for speeding on a routine pit stop with 35 laps remaining, and the driver became unglued. "I swear on my children and my wife that I was not speeding!" he shouted over his radio. "There is no way! Thank you NASCAR for screwing my day." Crew chief Brian Pattie begged his driver to calm down and focus on salvaging a solid points day, to no avail. "Don't tell me to relax, dude!" Montoya yelled. "We had this in the bag." Indeed he did, but the penalty took him out of contention and relegated him to an 11th-place finish. Montoya, who had moved as high as sixth in the Sprint Cup standings as he ran out front, instead lost a spot and Charles Barkley is now 10th in the race for the Chase for the championship. The difference in his paycheck was severe: Johnson earned $448,001 for the victory, while Montoya's share of the purse was knocked down to $224,048. The performance was reminiscent of Montoya's win in the 2000 Indy 500, when he led 167 of 200 laps in his first race at the storied track. His team celebrated his return Sunday with a retro paint scheme that duplicated that winning car, and as he clicked off lap after lap, it was deja vu for the Colombian driver. "I was cruise(ing). I was super fast," a calmer Montoya said after the race. Too fast, actually. NASCAR said the electronic timing system Nike air jordan IVcaught Montoya twice exceeding the limit as he drove down pit road. "There's nothing to prove wrong," said Robin Pemberton, vice president of competition. "It's about as simple math as you can use." The penalty opened up the race for anyone else to claim, and overshadowed Johnson's third win in the last four years at Indy. Johnson, who won for the third time this season, also became the first driver to win in consecutive seasons since Indy opened to NASCAR 16 years ago. Johnson wouldn't speculate on if he would have won the race if Montoya had not been penalized. "I do know I have the trophy," he offered. "I hate it for him. I know it is a story, Juan led so many laps, but when we come back and look at it two months from now the stat sheet is going to have a 'W' next to my name. That's all that matters." Current points leader Tony Stewart, a two-time Brickyard winner who finished third, wasn't sure anyone could beat Montoya. A victim monogram exoticsof his own Indy heartbreak, Stewart could commiserate with Montoya's disappointments. "He never really was challenged all day," Stewart said. "He did a great job. I know what he's feeling like — he's got to be sick inside. He had the car, he had the talent to do it, he just made a mistake and it cost him." Johnson had to hold off Hendrick Motorsports teammate Mark Martin to get it, though. After Montoya's penalty, Martin moved into the lead for the restart with 24 laps to go and Johnson lined up on his outside. Johnson sailed to the front and pulled away, only to have to hold off Martin over a nerve-racking final five laps. Martin, who at 50 became the oldest polesitter in Indy's 100 years, finished second and moved up two spots in the standings to ninth. "I would have liked to win it," Martin said. "Just got beat by Superman." It was a 1-2 finish for Rick Hendrick for the second straight race — Martin and Jeff Gordon led the way in Chicago two weeks ago — and gave the team owner his seventh victory in 16 visits to The Brickyard. "I still get chills when I walk down Nike Men Dunk SB Special Ed Gasoline Alley and see the grandstands on both sides of the track," Hendrick said. Greg Biffle was fourth and followed by Brian Vickers and Kevin Harvick, who grabbed his best finish in 15 races. Kasey Kahne was seventh and followed by David Reutimann, four-time Brickyard winner Gordon and Matt Kenseth. A cut tire caused Kyle Busch to finish 38th and drop out of contention for the Chase. The bad day cost him four spots in the standings. He is 14th with six races left to set the 12-driver Chase field. "I think it's pretty self-explanatory that we're trying to fight for a spot in the Chase," said Busch, a three-time winner this season. The tire problems that plagued last year's race were never a factor, as Goodyear made good on its promise to find the right compound for one of the biggest races of the season. Goodyear's product last year couldn't last longer than 10-to-12 laps, and the tiremaker spent 11 months diligently correcting the problem. "Goodyear did a great job with the Nike Trainer Dunktires, that's for sure," said 15th-place finisher Carl Edwards. "I can't imagine how much money they spent to come out here and make this a great race and a safe race for all of us."

FOUNTAIN HILLS, Ariz. – A Taser stun gun, capable of shocking three people without being reloaded, was unveiled Monday in front of Nike air jordan 9 hundreds of law enforcement officers who applauded after watching rounds of barbed wire fired at metal targets. The demonstration at the Scottsdale-based company's annual conference was performed by Taser International Chairman Tom Smith, and his brother, CEO Rick Smith, who says the device will become the new standard for police officers who want greater tactical abilities. The device is the first new stun gun Taser International has introduced since 2003. Older Taser stun guns, in use by 14,200 law enforcement agencies throughout the United States, have to be reloaded after one shot, which can be a problem for an officer who has missed a target or has more than one suspect to subdue. "This is as big a step as when firearms went from a muzzle loader to the revolver," Rick Smith said later. "If I was a cop I'd want Jordan VIII shoes to carry one." The new stun gun costs $1,799, compared with $799 for the older model, though Smith said law enforcement agencies could trade in their older ones for credits worth $300-$800. He said the devices are in line with the costs of other law enforcement tools, and that Taser hopes law enforcement agencies can tap federal stimulus funds. He said the device will be available to law enforcement agencies in late August. Officers at the conference will receive free ones provided they pass an operating test. Like the older models, the new stun gun shoots two barbed wires that deliver about 6 watts of electrical current for several seconds, temporarily immobilizing people from a distance. Only the new device has three sets of wires. The device, which can hit people up to 35 feet away, looks like a bulky gun but weighs less than two pounds. It's about 2.5 Nike air jordan 8 inches wide and seven inches tall. While the new Taser stun gun can be used against three people, it also can target the same person more than once. Smith said each barb would deliver a separate shock. The device also will allow for greater accountability because it has sensors that measure each discharge, Smith said, and that data can then be downloaded and analyzed. Human rights groups contend Tasers cause heart attacks. Taser spokesman Steve Tuttle said the company has won 96 of 97 wrongful-death and product liability lawsuits filed against it and is appealing after being found 15 percent responsible in the one suit it lost. Amnesty International says 351 people in the U.S. died after they were shocked with Tasers, and that in 50 of those cases, medical examiners cited a link between Taser shocks and death. Curt Goering, deputy executive director ofJordan VII shoes Amnesty International USA, said while he hasn't been able to fully examine the new mode Taser, it raises concerns. "The new models will likely fuel the controversy about the potential lethality or abuse because there's potential for repeat Tasings," he said. He said his organization generally supports the development of non-lethal force for police agencies but that officers are using Tasers far too often. "The threshold for use of force is often lower, so police are using these weapons in situations where the operation of a firearm would never be justified," he said. Smith said Tasers are saving the lives of suspects across the country and saving police departments money that would have gone for workers' compensation for injured officers and litigation stemming from the use of firearms. "It's just one of those things that unfortunately, Amnesty is more about what they're against than what they're for," he said. "We are the new technology — it's splashy because of the electricity, you can make Nike air jordan 7 it scary. And I'm really disappointed they haven't taken a more constructive approach." Fred Cheatham, an officer with Escondido police in California, said he thinks the new Tasers seem too bulky but that he would appreciate being able to fire the device three times without reloading. "I can see a lot of applications for that," he said.

SAN FRANCISCO – Microsoft finally persuaded Yahoo to surrender control of the Internet's second most popular search engine and Nike air jordan VIjoin it in a daunting battle — taking on the overwhelming dominance of Google in the online advertising market. A 10-year deal announced Wednesday gives Microsoft its best shot yet to show its new search technology, Bing, is as good as or better than Google's. Microsoft also hopes to use Yahoo to divert sales from Google, which generates more than $20 billion a year from ads. Gaining access to Yahoo's audience would instantly more than triple Bing's U.S. market share to 28 percent. That's still a far cry from the remarkable 65 percent of U.S. searches handled by Google, according to the research firm comScore Inc. By joining forces, Microsoft and Yahoo are betting they will be able to focus on their respective strengths. By turning over responsibility for search technology to Microsoft, Yahoo can concentrate on sales of billboard-style advertising on the Web — and figuring out how to keep luring traffic to its Web sites, which already attract more than 570 million people worldwide every month. While the agreement shapes up as a potential boon for Microsoft, it was greeted in the stock market as a letdown for Yahoo. Just 14 months ago, Microsoft dangled $9 billion in front of Yahoo in an attempt to forgemonogram exotics a search advertising partnership, only to be rebuffed. Yahoo had also turned down Microsoft's $47.5 billion bid to buy the entire company. Yahoo has been struggling so badly since then that Microsoft isn't paying any money in advance. Instead, it will give Yahoo 88 percent of the search ad sales made on its Web site, above the usual commission of 70 to 80 percent. By spending less on its own search technology, Yahoo expects to boost its annual operating profit by about $500 million — but not until 2012, when the two companies expect to have all the pieces of a complex technological puzzle in place. "I think a lot of people are kind of looking at the numbers and seeing a lot of question marks where they expected to see exclamation points," said Scott Kessler, a Standard & Poor's equity analyst. Yahoo Inc. shares plunged $2.08, or 12 percent, to $15.14 as investors expressed disappointment over the absence of an immediate windfall. Microsoft Corp. shares gained 33 cents to $23.80 while Google Inc. shares shed $3.61 to $436.24. It took Carol Bartz, Yahoo's chief executive, just six months to strike a deal with Microsoft — something that neither of herMinnesota Vikings Jerseys predecessors, Terry Semel and Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang, seemed interested in doing. "This move makes up for a lot of the stupid mistakes made by the preceding administration," said technology analyst Rob Enderle, who thinks Yahoo will be able to devote more energy to developing services to compete with online hangouts like Facebook. Shortly after her arrival, Bartz made it clear she was willing to farm out Yahoo's search engine for "boatloads of money" as long as she as thought the company would still get adequate information about its users' interests. Bartz predicted the deal will enrich the company over the long run. "This agreement comes with boatloads of value for Yahoo, our users, and the industry," Bartz said. Yahoo will have limited access to the data on users' searches, which yield insights that can be used to pick out ads more likely to pique a person's interest. The value of that information is why Microsoft wants to process more search requests. Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer could barely contain his excitement as he gushed about finally getting Yahoo on his side — something he has been trying to do for at least three years. "I am very enthusiastic," Ballmer said in an interview. "This is what I have basically been saying for the past 18 months: The worldNike Men Dunk Low will be better served for consumers, advertisers and publishers, and there will be more competition for Google, if we can somehow figure out how to get Microsoft and Yahoo together in search." Antitrust regulators plan to review the agreement to make sure it doesn't lessen competition or compromise the privacy of people who use the search engines. Google tried to stop Yahoo from falling into Microsoft's camp. Last year it formed its own proposed search advertising deal with Yahoo, only to be forced to retreat after U.S. antitrust officials threatened to sue. Microsoft helped spearhead the campaign against a Google-Yahoo partnership. Now many people, including Ballmer, expect Google to try to turn the tables on Microsoft by opposing its Yahoo deal. "There has traditionally been a lot of competition online, and our experience is that competition brings about great things for users," Google spokesman Adam Kovacevich said. "We're interested to learn more about the deal." Advertisers will probably support Microsoft because a stronger player in the search market should protect them from potential abuses byNike air jordan 7 shoes Google, said Kevin Lee, CEO of online marketing specialist Didit Inc. "If there's only one choice in search, that's just an uncomfortable position to be in," Lee said. Like Yahoo, Microsoft has invested billions in search technology during the past decade. Yet it remained a distant third in market share while its online losses piled up. Microsoft is counting on Bing, unveiled last month, to turn things around. Bing has been getting mostly positive reviews and picking up slightly more traffic with the help of a $100 million marketing campaign. Analysts believe the successful debut pushed Microsoft to reopen negotiations so it could expose its search engine improvements to a wider audience. While Microsoft and Yahoo await government approval of their partnership, there is no doubt Google will try to increase its lead by upgrading its own search engine, said Danny Sullivan, editor of the online newsletter SearchEngineLand. Already, Google is going after Microsoft's bread-and-butter business of software for personal computers. It's working on a free operating system for inexpensive PCs, a move that could threaten Microsoft's Windows. "Google is very paranoid aboutNike air jordan 7 Microsoft," Sullivan said. "They are always trying to figure out what kind of `evil' thing Microsoft is going to do next."

GUADALAJARA, Mexico – When President Barack Obama visited Mexico in April, the now-global swine flu epidemic — unbeknownst Nike air jordan Vto the White House — had just begun here and an Obama aide returned home sick. What could have become a diplomatic downer, however, ultimately turned into a bright spot. Obama was never in danger, the aide and his family recovered, and the two nations cooperated extensively on the flu outbreak through the spring and beyond. The United States earned huge points with its southern neighbor for not joining the countries banning flights, halting trade and taking other actions that Mexico considered unfairly punitive. Now, as Obama returns to Mexico, the swine flu that spread from here across the world is increasingly back in the news — and at the top of the agenda of at a lightning-quick, three-way summit Sunday and Monday in Guadalajara. Obama, Mexican President Felipe Calderon and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper will try to build on that earlierMichael Jackson Memorial cooperation to handle an expected new wave of cases during North America's upcoming flu season. Obama and Calderon began meetings late Sunday afternoon with photographs and smiles. Outside, caravans of heavily armed federal agents patrolled the streets. Dozens of police carrying riot gear manned roadblocks meant to keep protesters away from the center where the leaders were scheduled to meet. John Brennan, Obama's chief homeland security aide, said the talks are timely — and crucial, given the long borders the U.S. shares with Mexico and Canada. As important as it is to further link up health officials and ready vaccine and antiviral supplies, the three leaders also must together and publicly reinforce a determination not to panic when cases arise, he said. "There are people who are going to be getting sick in the fall and die," Brennan said. Keeping the severity and reach of the illnesses to a minimum is a priority, but officials also "want to make sure that we do everything possible to ensure the continuation of commerce, transportation and trade between the three countries." America's first- and third-largest trade relationships are with Canada and Mexico. All three are partners in Nike Air Maxthe North American Free Trade Agreement, the largest free-trade zone in the world. Closing borders or restricting travel would be very costly for families and businesses on all sides of the borders, an important consideration given the limping economy and the fact that health experts see such actions as pointless in containing the flu's spread. President George W. Bush kicked off the trilateral tradition in 2005 with the first summit held near his Texas ranch. They typically are rather sleepy affairs — no splashy news, little attention. Despite the lofty name of North American Leaders Summit, it lacks a defining cause and is usually more a progress report on commercial and security integration than an action-packed headline-grabber. Officials say the meetings are vital nonetheless. Peter DeShazo, a former State Department official for Western Hemisphere affairs, said Canada and Mexico are vital to the U.S. economy and security, making regular conversations at the highest levels a must. "These relationships are so complex and multifaceted," said DeShazo, who directs the Americas Program for the Center for Strategic and International Studies. Said Obama national security adviser lv damier canvaslJames Jones: "I think you get in trouble when you wait too long before talking to your neighbors." The fifth North American summit is short — just one evening and barely half the next day, but the list of issues is long. The U.S. neighbors will want Obama to explain where America's economic recovery is going because both countries saw their own fortunes fall as a result of problems in the U.S. Obama will hear complaints from Calderon and Harper about "Buy American" requirements in the $787 billion economic stimulus package. Climate change is a priority, too. The three leaders also are expected to take a joint stand on a recent problem in their hemisphere — the June coup in Honduras that saw President Manuel Zelaya ousted by the military. Obama started a late Sunday afternoon meeting with Calderon without making a comment. He did not schedule a separate session with Harper while in Mexico; the Canadian leader will see the president on Sept. 16 in Washington. The three leaders were to have dinner together Sunday night, with the agenda intentionally open and free-flowing. The next day, they have more formalized meetings. They appear together before reporters ahead of their midday departures. Obama's meeting with Calderon will continuewholesale nfl jerseys his drive for a new tone in U.S.-Mexico relations. They had their ups and downs under Bush, driven by a divide over the Iraq war, the United States' building of a border fence and Bush's failure to produce an immigration overhaul. Like Bush, Obama has emphasized tighter border security. But he also has pledged to renew immigration overhaul efforts, including a citizenship path for illegal immigrants. During his April visit, Obama made a welcome acknowledgment to Mexicans that Americans share the blame for violence south of border because of drug consumption and gun trafficking. Since then, the U.S. has made a bigger effort to halt the southward flow of guns and money. Drug violence has killed more than 11,000 people Michael Jackson Memorialsince Mexico launched a national 006. But a $100 million installment of U.S. drug-fighting aid to Mexico is being held up over concerns in Congress over abuses by the military.

NEW YORK – A federal judge on Monday rejected a $33 million settlement Michael Jackson Memorialbetween the Securities and Exchange Commission and Bank of America Corp., saying the SEC's accusations of inadequate disclosure by the bank over bonuses paid at Merrill Lynch must now go to trial. Separately, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo's office is preparing to file charges within the next couple of weeks against several high-ranking executives at Bank of America, claiming they failed to disclose details about the bank's acquisition of Merrill Lynch, according to a person familiar with the investigation. The ruling in the SEC case comes one month after the agency and Bank of America thought they had put a thorny issue behind them, and leaves the SEC with the task of mounting a case against BofA over one of the most sensitive issues of nike jordan 2the financial crisis — executive pay on Wall Street. The SEC announced last month that it had settled its civil charges against BofA, which agreed to buy the New York investment bank last year, without the bank admitting or denying guilt in the case. BofA has said it didn't violate disclosure rules. U.S. District Judge Jed Rakoff held up his approval of the settlement, however, and ordered the SEC last month to explain why it didn't pursue charges against specific executives at Bank of America over the accusations. Rakoff, in his ruling, found that the settlement "suggests a rather cynical relationship between the parties: the SEC gets to claim that it is exposing wrongdoing on the part of the Bank ofAir Jordan 2 America in a high-profile merger, the bank's management gets to claim that they have been coerced into an onerous settlement by overzealous regulators. And all this is done at the expense, not only of the shareholders, but also of the truth." Cuomo's office is likely to file civil charges against the executives over their role in failing to alert shareholders to mounting losses and accelerated bonus payments at Merrill, said the person, who requested anonymity because no charges have been filed yet. The AG's office has also questioned whether Bank of America failed to tell shareholders about its consideration of backing out of the deal and mounting write-downs at one of Merrill's mortgage lending subsidiaries. Both the attorney general's office and Rakoff have questioned whether the bank knowingly hid details about the acquisition from shareholders ahead of a vote to approve the deal. After receiving additional statements from the SEC and BofA lastAir Jordan shoes 2 week, Rakoff ruled Monday that the proposed settlement "cannot remotely be called fair," and ordered that the case go to trial beginning Feb. 1. "We disagree with today's ruling," Bank of America said in a statement, adding that the bank would consider its legal options in the coming days. The SEC said in a statement the agency believes the proposed settlement "properly balanced all of the relevant considerations." Bank of America agreed to acquire Merrill Lynch in a hurried deal exactly one year ago today at the height of the financial crisis, just as Lehman Brothers was preparing to file for bankruptcy. It wasAir Pippen I later revealed that Merrill, with the knowledge of Bank of America executives, paid Merrill employees $3.6 billion in bonuses just before the deal closed on Jan. 1. Merrill wound up paying the bonuses for 2008 despite losing $27.6 billion that year, a record for the firm. Those losses affected the bottom line at Bank of America, one of the largest recipients of U.S. government bailout funds. In seeking approval to buy Merrill Lynch, Bank of America told investors that Merrill would not pay year-end bonuses without Bank of America's consent. But in its complaint filed Aug. 3 in federal court in Manhattan, the SEC said BofA had already authorized Merrill to pay up to $5.8 billion in bonuses and didn't share that information with shareholders. That rendered a statement Bank of America mailed to nike jordan 3shareholders of both companies "materially false and misleading," the SEC said. "BofA is in serious, serious trouble now," said Anthony Sabino, professor of law and business at St. John's University in New York, saying the bank is at war on two fronts. "One, Judge Rakoff, by refusing to countenance the settlement, is forcing the SEC to go back and demand more details and more money. The other battleground is with New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo." Rakoff's move was unprecedented. While judges have on occasion sent back proposed settlements to the SEC, ordering them to be renegotiated, experts said, throwing an accord out entirely breaks legal ground. "I've never seen this," said James Cox, a Duke University law professor and securities law expert. "To me, it's long overdue," he added, saying that the SEC and the Justice Department have tended Air Jordan 3to accept settlements from companies "without drilling down to find out who the culpable parties were." Bank of America, among the banks hardest hit by loan losses and the recession, received $45 billion, including $20 billion in January, and guarantees to protect it against losses on hundreds of billions of dollars in loans to help it absorb mounting losses at Merrill. BofA's stock has underperformed the market since it announced the deal to acquire Merrill. It has lost about half its value during the past year. The SEC could seek to renegotiate the deal with Bank of America, though it may be difficult to find revised terms that would satisfy Rakoff if bank executives weren't individually charged. The imminent move by Cuomo against executives intensifiesAir Jordan shoes 3 the pressure on the bank. "It's truly a come-to-Jesus moment for Bank of America and its relationship with its various officers," Duke's Cox said. "They need to hang up a scalp or two." __ AP Business WritersBarry Sanders Zoom Turf Ieva M. Augstums in Charlotte, N.C., Marcy Gordon in Washington and Associated Press Writer Larry Neumeister in New York contributed to this report.

In economic and foreign policy, as in fashion and music, the 1970s were largely a miserable decade. But out of that woeful time arose a generation of conservative giants in journalism and public life, among them the New York Times air jordancolumnist William Safire, who died yesterday of pancreatic cancer at age 79. From 1973 to 2005, Bill Safire prowled American politics in twice-weekly columns that kept the political class honest and his readers entertained and informed. Usually he was tough competition for those of us at the Journal, but we also recall that he was there as an intellectual ally most of the time, and especially on foreign policy where he was a stalwart Cold Warrior and a friend of what used to be known as the "captive nations." Unlike many columnists, Safire did not soar at 35,000 feet bemoaning what fools these mortals be. He did his own reporting, digging up stories and anecdotes that embarrassed politiciansAir Jordan 17 who deserved to be embarrassed. He was a master of his craft, a student of the English language who loved the playful use of words. He was also never one to court the good favor of liberals by ducking a brawl when his friends needed help, as when the Journal became a target of the left for challenging the ethics of President Bill and Hillary Clinton. Safire had our back when he famously referred to Mrs. Clinton as a "congenital liar." This was after he had voted for Mr. Clinton in 1992 out of disappointment with President George H.W. Bush. President George W. Bush nonetheless presented Safire with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2006, a prize he well deserved. The turning of the years can be cruel, and it is sad to lose men like Bill Safire, Robert Bartley, William F. Buckley Jr., Robert Novak, Irving Kristol, Milton Friedman, Jack Kemp and others who did so much to rescue America from the failures Air Jordan shoes 16of the 1960s and malaise of the 1970s. Yet one reason we note their deaths is the great success they had in life. As Safire would have urged, our obligation is to stop grieving and return cheerfully to the barricades.

June Kirchik was a stranger. She lived out the last of life in a second-hand hospital bed surrounded by the pea-green walls of a dingy room that smelled, well, like death. Embraced by squalor and Nike Air Bound taunted daily by a massive breast tumor that insidiously swallowed her, she was an utter stranger to a cure. In fact, she was little more than a name on a lengthy list of poor women with a dismal diagnosis and a sinister disease. I met June in an interview for a newspaper story about breast cancer care, a pitiful yarn about a 58-year-old woman who waited too long to get treatment and couldn't afford it anyway. It was a tale strewn with hospitals that wouldn't treat her without payment — and public clinics with waiting lists so long that the point became truly pointless. Each day became more deadly than the one before it. HerNike_Air_Alpha_Force_II_(white__grey)story appeared on a Sunday. “POVERTY, NEGLECT, THE SYSTEM ADD TO CANCER VICTIM'S PAIN,” read the Miami Herald headline. Suddenly, dozens of doctors and donors wanted to help. They offered money; they offered care; they offered clothes, comforts, bedsheets. What they couldn't offer was hope. Because there was none. The next day, she was dead. Later that week, an envelope appeared in my mail; insideAir Jordan 13 was a single worn $1 bill. Written in felt-tip pen in the thin border of the bill were these words: “For the breast cancer lady.” That was 18 years ago. I always meant to put the dollar in a church collection basket, but I never did. I stuck it in a book for safekeeping, and it has long since disappeared. But even now, it's June I think of every time the checkout clerk at Randalls asks if I want to tack a $5 cancer donation on my grocery bill. So hideousnike jordan 19 was her death (the football-size breast tumor had perforated her skin and eventually caused gangrene) that any mention of cancer puts me squarely in the pea-green room. The disease is vicious; it preys brazenly. It takes our mothers, our daughters, our aunts and cousins, grandmothers and even strangers like June. Two weeks ago, my 25-year-old daughter asked me to walk with her and her work colleagues from the Ignite Restaurant Group this weekend in the Susan Komen Race for a Cure. Honestly, I didn't really much want to do it. But there it was, the ghost of June and the $1 bill from someoneAir Jordan shoes 15 who probably couldn't afford to give it. So, I'll be racing for a cure Saturday. Not for June. But for my daughter. Because one day, her life could depend on a cure — or worse, a simple gesture of generosity that came one day too late to save her.

The sea air isn't all that's salty when fishermen in the Cape Cod town of Chatham talk about the hated spiny dogfish. Fishermen consider the small shark, renowned for its stunning appetite, Air Jordan shoes 2009the vermin of the ocean. They say the once-threatened dogfish has rebounded under federal protections to an insatiable mass that's devouring more valuable and scarce fish that regulators are trying to restore, such as cod, while it destroys nets, steals bait and eats catch right off their hooks. "It's a (expletive) plague of locusts is what it is," hook fisherman Peter Taylor said. "I don't care if I make a penny on dogfish, we just need to kill them." Fishermen want to catch more of the ornery, schooling predator to dent its population and make more money off it, but rules forbid that. Federal James shoes regulators say that although fishermen see dogfish everywhere, "they're not seeing the whole picture," said Maggie Mooney-Seus, a National Marine Fisheries Service spokeswoman. Still, the dogfish dispute has prompted regulators to do a fresh assessment of the stock and how it's measured, beginning in January. Paul Rago, a National Marine Fisheries Service biologist, said he was confident dogfish have been well managed but admits anxiety amid the questions. "It's always a concern to me that if we're off on some assumption, we've missed something, you know, it has immediate outcomes," he said. "It's fine for us to say, 'Whoops.' But for the guy that's at the end of that thing, it's not acceptable." In the late 1990s, the dogfish population fell to critically low levels as fishermen targeted females. Regulators say the stock is now stronger and more abundant near shore, where fishermen see them, but remains vulnerable. Scientists project declinesAir Jordan 3 in coming years because males outnumber the slow-maturing, unproductive females. The despised dogfish is a "perfect scapegoat" for the fishery's problems, said Sonja Fordham, a shark specialist with the International Union for Conservation of Nature who blames decades of overfishing. "I think it's a very popular notion to say this voracious predator is scarfing up all the good stuff," Fordham said. "The facts don't back it up." The dogfish, which has two spines on its back, prowls waters from Nova Scotia to Florida, eating anything in its way, including other dogfish. On a recent trip off Chatham, dogfish were hanging from almost all 300 hooks fisherman Jamie Eldredge spooled into the ocean 20 minutes earlier. One hook held an unfortunate blue fish,Michael_Jackson_Memorial stripped to its spine by the swarming dogs, as they're called. Other hooks had only blue fish heads and gutted whips, the nickname for male dogfish. "That's the dogfish at work," Eldredge muttered. The biggest market for dogfish is overseas, where their belly strips are used in fish and chips in Britain or smoked and downed at German beer gardens. At 22 cents a pound, the dogfish doesn't bring much compared to other species, but fishermen limited to a few thousand pounds per day can still earn enough to make a short trip worthwhile. They just can't fish them for long. In Massachusetts, for instance, fishermen chased dogfish for just weeks in September before they reached their allocation. The 5,000-metric-ton federal catch limit is about 1 percent of the 479,000 metric tons scientists say exists. It's far too little to slow the growing population, said University of New England professor James Sulikowski, who studies dogfish behavior and contends regulators may be massively undercounting them. He theorizes dogfish don't spend as much time near the ocean bottom as regulatorsParker shoes believe, meaning bottom-trawling federal survey boats aren't getting representative samples. Satellite monitoring tags Sulikowski put on three dogfish found them frequently at higher depths and far offshore, where survey boats don't go. He guesses there may be at least four times as many as regulators think. Fordham said that if dogfish were devastating the ecosystem and other fish, the stocks of haddock that fishermen say is a favorite dogfish treat wouldn't be so robust. Even if fishermen suddenly were turned loose on dogfish, the strict limits over the past decade have withered local markets and infrastructure, such as processors, so it would take time for those to return. Meanwhile, the European market may soon be a tougher place to sell dogfish. In March, the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species will consider a European Union proposal to require dogfish exporters to certify that their catches were from sustainable fisheries. Opponents say the bureaucracy would make it impossible to get the fish to Europe while it's fresh. While theAir Jordan 4 rulemakers make rules, Charlie Felch hopes to squeeze three more years out of his business before retiring and leaving the dogfish to someone else. Felch, 58, makes his own gear, and dogfish ravage the gill nets he sets off Seabrook, N.H., sometimes snarling multiple meshes in their mouths as they crowd out the cod and pollock he's after. He said what he sees, managers don't, and he doesn't know what he can do about it. "I told my son, I said, 'Please find something else to do. We've got to get out of this. This is nuts,'" Felch said. "You just cannot get away from these things."

THE HAGUE — On the first day of his trial, Air Jordan shoes 10.5Radovan Karadzic, the former Bosnian Serb leader who stands accused of genocide against Bosnia’s Muslim population, refused to appear in court on Monday and sent word once again that he wanted more time to prepare his defense in proceedings that aim to cover three years of warfare and widespread brutality against civilians. With no lawyers present to represent Mr. Karadzic, a potentially historic moment — the trial of the most senior Bosnian Serb leader called to account for the horrors of the 1990s — fell flat. The presiding judge, a soft-spoken jurist from South Korea, ended the session in less than 20 minutes but warned that the trial would continue on Tuesday anyway. Even from his cell, Mr. Karadzic, a former psychiatrist turned extreme Serbian nationalist, managed to distress a number of the victims’ families. More than 160 people had made the 24-hour Steve Nashtrek by bus from Bosnia to the United Nations war crimes tribunal in The Hague, and part of the group watched through the bulletproof glass of the public gallery. As the short session closed, many in the group shouted in anger and frustration. Munira Subasic, one of the organizers of the group, said the majority had to return to Bosnia during the night because they had no money for hotel rooms. Several women who said they had lost husbands and sons in the war said they felt betrayed by the court. The judge, O-gon Kwon, last week wrote a private letter to Mr. Karadzic, asking him to reconsider his position not to attend. Mr. Karadzic had announced his absence in a letter to the court, after he lost his appeal requesting more preparation time. The judge, who sat on the bench that struggled with the often unruly Slobodan Milosevic, the former Serbian president, has ample experience with chaos in the courtroom and evidently tried to reach out to Mr. Karadzic. Reading from his letter to Mr. Karadzic, the judge stressed that “we will do our utmost to protect your rights.” He added that Mr. Karadzic could ask for extra time when needed for Ugg shoescross-examining witnesses, for example. But the judge also hinted that his absence could force the court to impose a lawyer, stripping Mr. Karadzic of his right to defend himself. A panel of four international judges is trying Mr. Karadzic, 64, who is viewed as one of the main architects of what was called the ethnic cleansing of Bosnia — that is, the violent removal of non-Serbs from a range of towns and villages during the 1992-95 war. He faces 11 counts of war crimes and crimes against humanity, including two counts of genocide. On Monday, a lawyer for Mr. Karadzic, Marko Sladojevic, said his client would not be in court on Tuesday. He said Mr. KaradzicAir Jordan 10.5 was working his way through more than a million pages of prosecution documents, adding, “He wants a trial and tell his side of the story but he still has months of work and does not want to commit legal suicide.”

WASHINGTON – Top Obama administration officials pledged Sunday to work with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, despite continuing doubts about his credibility that could have been eased had he won a runoff election against his Air jordan 19 shoestop challenger, who dropped out citing concerns of fraud. The decision Sunday by former Afghan Foreign Minister Abdullah Abdullah to quit the runoff, less than a week before it was set to happen, creates yet another headache for the White House as it struggles to draw up a new battle plan for the eight-year Afghanistan war — including whether to send tens of thousands more U.S. troops to fight. "We are going to deal with the government that is there," senior Obama adviser David Axelrod said. "And obviously there are issues we need to discuss, such as reducing the high level of corruption. These are issues we'll take up with President Karzai." Axelrod said Obama would announce a war strategy "within weeks." A senior U.S. official told The Associated Press that Obama has still not yet decided what to do, and it remains unclear whether he will decide before he goes to Asia on Nov. 11. The official said a Karzai victory would have given the sitting Afghan president more legitimacy in the wake of widespread charges of fraud during the initial election in August, in which he collected 48 percent of the vote. The officialJordan XII shoes spoke on condition of anonymity to speak more frankly about Obama's decision-making process. Still, Karzai's re-election was all but universally expected among U.S. officials who have been planning for weeks on how to help his government move forward. "Karzai was going to win anyway. So what now?" Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., said Sunday in an AP interview from Dubai as he headed back to the United States after three days in Afghanistan. Had a runoff occurred, "that would make me think that he's more credible," said Hunter, a Marine veteran who served in Iraq and Afghanistan. "But we can't force Abdullah to run. Let's get past that and say, 'Karzai, step up.'" It was still not clear Sunday whether a runoff election would be held anyway, but an announcement canceling it was expected as early as Monday. In a statement, Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton praised Abdullah and said, "It is now a matter for the Afghan authorities to decide on a way ahead that brings this electoral process to a conclusion in line with the Afghan constitution." For months, the Obama administration hasJordan 17 shoes been grappling with whether to continue targeting the Taliban with more U.S. forces in an increasingly deadly war in Afghanistan, or to focus on eliminating al-Qaida and other terrorists with unmanned spy planes in Pakistan. About 68,000 American troops already have been ordered to report to Afghanistan by the end of the year. The top U.S. and NATO commander in Afghanistan, Army Gen. Stanley McChrystal, wants the Pentagon to send him an additional 40,000 troops to prevent the Taliban from letting al-Qaida once again use Afghanistan as a haven — as it was in the days leading up to the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks. The White House has signaled it will probably send more forces, but fewer than what McChrystal wants. The senior U.S. official said Sunday that Obama's national security team is trying to define a "sufficiency standard" — sending a sufficient number of U.S. troops to provide a sufficient level of security and allow sufficient growth of air jordan XXgovernance and economic development to stabilize Afghanistan over the next three to five years. Abdullah's withdrawal, in effect, handed Karzai an uncontested win that puts Obama "in a difficult position," said Karin von Hippel, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies. "We need a credible partner to make things happen," said von Hippel, who was still planning to head to Afghanistan on Monday to serve as an election observer should the Nov. 7 vote be held. "It's possible that Karzai can be a credible partner, but he really hasn't been in the last few years. And he needs to change the way he governs to become that." Hunter and Sen. Joe Lieberman, the Connecticut independent, called anew for Obama to heed McChrystal's request for additional forces. "It's time to send more help," Lieberman said. Once a Democrat, the hawkish Lieberman said the Obama administration needs to start working with Karzai, whom he praised. "I think it's time for us to stop beating up on President Karzai and start building up President Karzai and his government to be the government we need," Lieberman said. "Because they're not the enemy. The enemy is the Taliban." Valerie Jarrett, another senior White House adviser, said Abdullah's withdrawal would not "complicate" Obama's strategy decision. She did not mention Karzai specifically. "We're going to work with the leader of the Air jordan 20 shoes Afghan government and hopefully that's going to improve the state of conditions for the people in Afghanistan, and also help us as we try to bring this war to a close," Jarrett said. Axelrod and Lieberman spoke on CBS' "Face the Nation," and Jarrett appeared on ABC's "This Week."

It will not be easy. As the evidence mounted in late summer that Mr. Karzai’s forces had sought to win re-election through widespread fraud to defeat his main challenger, Abdullah Abdullah, administration officials made no secret of their disgust. How do you consider sending tens of thousands of additional American troops, they asked in meetings in the White House, to prop up an Afghan government regarded as illegitimate by many of its own people? The answer was supposed to be a runoff election. Now, administrationAir jordan 11 shoes officials argue that Mr. Karzai will have to regain that legitimacy by changing the way he governs, at a moment when he is politically weaker than at any time since 2001. “We’re going to know in the next three to six months whether he’s doing anything differently — whether he can seriously address the corruption, whether he can raise an army that ultimately can take over from us and that doesn’t lose troops as fast as we train them,” one of Mr. Obama’s senior aides said. He insisted on anonymity because of the confidentiality surrounding the Obama administration’s own debate on a new strategy, and the request by Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the American military commander in Afghanistan, for upward of 44,000 more troops. “Needless to say,” the senior aide added, “this is not where we wanted to be after nine months.” That is a huge understatement. In the early days of Mr. Obama’s presidency, he and his aides searched desperately for a plausible alternative to Mr. Karzai. They found none. Since the spring, there has been little doubt that Mr. Karzai would remain in the presidential palace after the election was over. The question was whether that vote would demonstrate that a desolate nation that has always been at the mercy of larger powers would show it could find its own way. Mr. Obama’s decision last March to add 21,000 troopsJordan 5 shoes was justified in part by the need to assure a relatively peaceful, fair election. The idea was to bolster Mr. Karzai’s credibility so that his authority would reach beyond Kabul, the capital. Here in the United States, Mr. Obama began scaling back American ambitions. With the advice of his defense secretary, Robert M. Gates, he dropped the Bush-era talk of turning Afghanistan into a Western-style democracy. He carefully avoided the word “victory,” which Mr. Bush had used so often. He narrowed the United States’ military objectives to destroying Al Qaeda — which is thought to be based largely in Pakistan — while simply subverting the Taliban’s ability to once again take over the country. “All we need to do is degrade the Taliban enough for the Afghan Army to be able to deal with them,” one of Mr. Obama’s top national security aides said recently. James Dobbins, who tried to formulate an Afghan approach for the Bush administration — and wrote of his frustrations as attention turned to Iraq — told Congress earlier this year that the objective should be to “ensure that fewer innocent Afghans are killed next year than this year.” “In a counterinsurgency campaign,” he said, “this is the difference between winning and losing.” But even Mr. Obama’s most limited goalsAir jordan 10 shoes require a legitimate government in Kabul, one with the authority to manage the army and to rebuild an incompetent and corrupt police force. It also needs the ability to install competent governors and spend Western aid effectively. Before the election was effectively ended with Mr. Abdullah’s withdrawal from the Nov. 7 runoff, Mr. Obama asked his national security aides and the State Department to come up with an agenda they could press on Mr. Karzai. It included reaching out to his political opponents, cleaning out the worst of his governors and ministers, and announcing a major new push on corruption. And it included peeling away — through whatever inducements work — the least committed of the Taliban, or at least those with no links to Al Qaeda. “If this is to be a turning point,” said Senator John Kerry, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who helped twist Mr. Karzai’s arm to accept that he must go along with a runoff, “we must strengthen the capacity of the Afghan government and insist that its leaders embrace lasting reforms.” The United States has already spent nearly a quarter-trillion dollars in Afghanistan, all theJordan XIII shoes while talking about those lasting reforms. The Bush administration made periodic efforts to warn Mr. Karzai that his own family’s reputed links to corruption threatened his government. It sent mission after mission to teach good governance, some of which succeeded and some of which ran into what former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called “the Afghan allergy” to dictates from foreign occupiers. For eight years, the United States and its allies have been struggling to train an Afghan Army; while it currently has a force of more than 90,000, American commanders put the number who can sustain themselves in a fight at closer to 50,000. And in the end, that force — an Afghan Army that can be trusted to defend the central government — is Mr. Obama’s route out of the country. If that army emerges as a trusted one in Afghanistan, able to control significant areas of the country with the cooperation of the local tribal leaders, Mr. Obama may be able to declare that the country cannot again be overrun by militants. Only then could he pull back from what he termed over the summer a “war of necessity.”

International Monetary Fund chief Dominique Strauss-Kahn Nike Jordansaid on Sunday that Jordan needs to strike a balance between its education system and market needs in order to boost the economy. "The problem is the inadequacy between the education system and the needs of the private sector," Strauss-Kahn told reporters in Amman at a joint news conferenceNike Jordan Shoes with Central Bank Governor Umayya Tukan. "The paradox is that the level of education in Jordan is rather high, very high I could say, and at the same time you have a very high level of youth and unemployment." He said one reason for this is that "the skills your people acquire at university are not the ones which are needed at the private sector." According to the IMF, unemployment is 12.7 percentnike air jordan fusion 20 shoes in the country of around six million people, 70 percent of whom under 30, but other estimates put unemployment at 25 percent. Strauss-Kahn said that the private sector in Jordan was "weak" and must play a greater role in the economy in order to bolster "growth in the future." He alsonike air jordan fushion 3 shoes expected the kingdom's economy to grow by four percent this year but said "this is not enough." "But I still see a rather strong possibility for the Jordan economy to do well in the coming years," said Strauss-Kahn, who held talks with King Abdullah II, Prime Minister Samir Rifai and Finance Minister Mohammad Abu Hammur. Turning to the local currency, Strauss-Kahn said Jordan should continue to peg the dinar on the US dollar. Last month, Standard and Poor'snike air jordan fushion 5 shoes downgraded its long-term local currency ratings for Jordan to BBB- from BBB, citing rising government debt and weaker fiscal flexibility. Strauss-Kahn, who arrived in Jordan on Saturday, also met students from eight universities from the Middle East, North Africa, and Pakistan. The meeting was part of the IMF Middlenike air jordan kids shoes East Youth Dialogue initiative "to engage with the youth of the region to get their perspectives on their economic future and to motivate their thinking at an early stage on policy measures that will be needed to secure sustainable economic growth in the region," it added. nike air jordan spizikes shoes nike air jordan womens shoes Nike Jordan Nike Jordan Shoes Air Jordan Shoes
