Nobel Prize Winner Tutu Condemns Suu Kyi Conviction

Wed, 12 Aug, 2009

Suu Kyi Conviction International leaders, human rights groups outraged over decision to hold opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest for 18 months World leaders are cheap watches strongly condemning Burma's government for deciding to keep opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi under house arrest for another 18 months, and are calling for her immediate and unconditional release. In an interview with VOA, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu called Suu Kyi "the Nelson Mandela of Burma." VOA's Cindy Saine reports on world reaction to Tuesday's conviction and sentencing. Reaction across the world was swift, as demonstrators gathered outside Burma's embassy in London to express their solidarity with pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. A group of prominent global leaders knows as "The Elders" called on ASEAN, the European Union Cartier watches and the U.N. Security Council not to accept Burma's verdict of another 18 months under house arrest for the Nobel Peace laureate. Retired South African Anglican Archbishop Desmond Tutu chairs the group. He sat down for an interview with VOA at a seminary near Washington, D.C. Tuesday. He said that even under Burmese law, it is illegal to keep sentencing Aung San Suu Kyi again and again. "But I mean we know that it is a show trial to try to keep her out of the way so that they can have their sham elections in 2010," said Archbishop Desmond Tutu. Tutu said he has not been able to communicate with Aung San Suu Kyi, who is an honorary member of The Elders, for a long time. She has been in detention for 14 of the Chopard watchespast 20 years, mostly under house arrest. He said the activist is a symbol of the cruel and depraved way Burma's rulers treat their people, including attacking and killing monks, and not allowing humanitarian assistance to reach victims of Cyclone Nargis last year. "Although we concentrate on Aung San Suu Kyi, it is something like used to happen with Nelson Mandela," said tutu. "You used that name because it personalized it. Whereas if you speak about political prisoners, it is a very fuzzy thing. Now you have got Aung San Suu Kyi, the, as it were, as the Mandela of Burma." Traveling in Africa, U.S. Secretary of Bvlgari watches State Hillary Clinton said Aung San Suu Kyi should not have been tried or convicted, and called for the release of the more than 2,000 political prisoners in Burma, including the American John Yettaw who swam across a lake to visit her. The 53-year-old who suffers from multiple medical problems, was sentenced to seven years of hard labor. His visit last May to Suu Kyi's home prompted Burma's rulers to put both of them on trial for alleged security violations. In a written White House statement, President Barack Obama also called for the release of all of Burma's political prisoners, and said suppressing ideas never gets rid of them. United Nations Jaeger LeCoultre watches Secretary General Ban Ki-moon also called on Burma's rulers to release Aung San Suu Kyi, and said if she and all other political leaders are not allowed to take part in elections next year, the credibility of the vote will be in doubt. Reports: Typhoon triggers China landslide

Tue, 11 Aug, 2009

BEIJING, China (CNN) -- A massive mudslide unleashed by Typhoon Morakot spilled into a coastal China town, crushing a half dozen buildings and burying an unknown number of people, state-run media reported Tuesday. The mudslide occurred at about 10:30 p.m. (2:30 p.m. GMT) Monday in Pengxi Township within Zhejiang province -- one of eastern China's wholesale watches regions hardest hit by Morakot, the Xinhua news agency reported, citing local authorities. The incident destroyed apartment buildings standing four stories tall at the foot of a mountain. Rescuers pulled out six survivors from the debris; one was in critical condition, Xinhua reported. However, it wasn't clear how many others were buried, and rescuers were hindered by huge piles of mud and rock. The deadly typhoon slammed into China's coastal provinces and Taiwan over the weekend, displacing more than 1 million people and left dozens missing, state-run media reported. "The most pressing needs now are providing shelter, food, and clean water for those who have had to evacuate their homes," says Cartier watches Hank Du, executive director for the humanitarian group, World Vision, in Taiwan. "We also want to make sure the children are secure and have a safe place where they are cared for." The group has started to distributed food, cleaning supplies, raincoats, flashlights and other supplies to those displaced in several Taiwanese communities. "Many of the affected live in remote areas and the roads are in bad condition. Highways and bridges are flooded and blocked by mudslides, fallen trees and other large debris," said Wesley Chen of the humanitarian group, World Vision. "For those who can't reach shelters, we are working to find ways to bring aid to them." High winds and torrential rain from Typhoon Morakot hit coastal provinces Fujian and Zhejian hardest, and caused the worst flooding in decades in Taiwan -- where flood waters as high as seven feet were reported, China Chopard watches Daily said. The typhoon swept across the Philippines and Taiwan's Hualien region before crashing into eastern China, claiming nearly two dozens lives along the way, the newspaper reported. Morakot has claimed at least six lives in mainland China, Xinhua reported Tuesday. Nearly 9 million people in Fujian, Zhejiang, Jiangxi and Anhui provinces were affected by Morakot, forcing 1.4 million people to relocate, the Ministry of Civil Affairs said, according to Xinhua. The ministry said more than Bvlgari watches 6,000 homes were toppled and 387,300 hectares of cropland were damaged, resulting in about 9 billion yuan ($1.3 billion) in direct losses, Xinhua reported. Nikkei Up on U.S. Jobs; Rio Falls

Mon, 10 Aug, 2009

SINGAPORE -- Asian stock markets rose Monday after a better-than-expected U.S. jobs report Friday lifted Wall Street, while Rio Tinto fell after China accused it of replica watches using "deceit" for six years to illegally obtain information. Japan's Nikkei 225 was up 1.1%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was up 0.7%, South Korea's Kospi Composite gained 0.2% and New Zealand's NZX-50 was 0.6% higher. DJIA futures were about eight points lower in screen trade. Singapore markets were closed for a public holiday. "Bottom line is the (U.S. jobs) data is good in detail as well as headline and revisions are in the right direction. This will likely strengthen the green shoots story and take some pressure off the Obama Administration's defenders that the stimulus plan is not working," said analysts at Cartier watches Brown Brothers Harriman in a note. Data released Friday showed U.S. employers cut 247,000 jobs in July after shedding a revised 443,000 a month earlier. The July drop was less severe than the 275,000 fall forecast by economists in a Dow Jones Newswires survey. In Australia, Rio Tinto was down 2% following weekend accusations published on a website that says it is affiliated with China's state secrets bureau, that Rio illegally obtained information about China's steel sector resulting in Chinese steelmakers being overcharged more than $100 billion for iron ore. Ord Minnett analyst Peter Arden said investors had been hoping that the issue of the four detained Rio employees was cooling off, but that these latest statements have revived fears. Arden said the issue may weigh on Rio's shares until it is resolved, even though iron ore sales will continue. "The reality is that China needs the iron ore," he said. BHP was down 1.5%, while Chopard watches Fortesque was up 2.5%, Bluescope gained 4.0% and Westfield rose 3.1%. Patersons' senior trader, Chris Blair expected the Sydney market to consolidate, with the benchmark index likely to post a 20 point gain. "I think we'll wait to tonight to see if Friday's gains on Wall Street are sustainable. It was probably a bit of a knee-jerk reaction to those U.S. jobs figures and I think the market is too stretched." The Japanese stock market was enjoying a broad-based rally with exporters lifted by the yen's weakness against the dollar over the weekend. Toyota was up 2.2%, Honda gained 3.2%, Canon 2.6% and Sony 2.4%. Data released before the market open showed Japanese core machinery orders rose 9.7% in June from the previous month, but the data also showed that Japanese companies expect core orders to decrease 8.6% from the previous quarter in the July-September period; "The June figure is positive but the July-September forecast is negative, so overall, the data won't move the market much," said Tachibana Bvlgari watches Securities analyst Kenichi Hirano. Sentiment in Seoul was lifted after the International Monetary Fund said Sunday it has sharply revised upward its 2009 growth outlook for the country, citing the government's "timely" and "comprehensive" measures to mitigate the financial and economic turbulence that erupted after the collapse of Lehman Brothers last year. "Of course, the U.S. job data and IMF news are positives for sentiment, but stocks have risen sharply already, reflecting expectations for the global economic recovery," said Lee Jin-woo at Mirae Asset Securities. Banks were leading with KB Financial up 2.1% and Shinhan Financial 1.1% higher. In New Zealand, bellwether Telecom underpinned the market, rising 1.1%. Retailer Hallenstein Glasson was up 3.9% while Fletcher Building had lost 1.0%. In foreign exchange markets, the yen was a little higher against the euro and the dollar due to demand from Japanese exporters. Trade was light and in Jaeger LeCoultre watches a relatively tight range with some traders away for summer vacations. The dollar was at ¥97.30 from ¥97.48 in late New York trade, while the euro was at $1.4197 from $1.4169 and at ¥138.14 from ¥138.46. The September Japanese government bond futures contract was sharply lower, down 0.22 at 137.37 points, weighed by the Nikkei's rise. Spot gold was down $2.10 from late in New York, at $951.80 per troy ounce. LME three-month copper dropped to $6,085 per metric ton, down 1.1% from the afternoon kerb Friday, with just 131 lots traded so far in Asia. Nymex September crude oil futures were down 42 cents at $70.51 per barrel.

Surgery, 'Sham' Equal in Treating Compression Fracture Pain

Fri, 07 Aug, 2009

WEDNESDAY, Aug. 5 (HealthDay News) -- Two new studies suggest that vertebroplasty, a widely used surgery to help heal compression fractures, is no better than "sham" surgery when it comes to wholesale watches relieving pain and improving daily function. But both procedures resulted in a significant decline in pain, so this is unlikely to signal the death knell for this widely performed surgery, experts noted. "From a clinician's standpoint, it's important to read this data and be aware of it," said Dr. L. Gerard Toussaint III, an assistant professor of neuroscience and experimental therapeutics at Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine and a neurosurgeon at Texas Brain and Spine Institute in Bryan. Vertebroplasty involves injecting a type of "cement" into the spine to stabilize it, thereby relieving pain Cartier watches and reducing disability in people who have had osteoporotic fractures. The procedure is minimally invasive and often performed under local anesthetic, with the patient going home the same day, Toussaint said. In the United States alone, some 750,000 people have vertebral compression fractures each year. According to an editorial that accompanies the studies, all appearing in the Aug. 6 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine, the number of vertebroplasty procedures performed in the United States has doubled in the past six years, from 4.3 to 8.9 per 1,000 people. Several studies have found great benefit from the procedure, but none of those were placebo-controlled. Experts also worry that there may be a downside, with the surgery putting patients at higher risk for future fractures. One trial, from Chopard watches Mayo Clinic researchers, randomly assigned 131 patients who had had one-to-three osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures to receive either vertebroplasty or a "sham" surgery without cement. Those in the placebo arm went through the motions of surgery, including being brought into the procedure room and being sedated before surgeons put novocaine in the skin and over the bone, said study author Dr. David F. Kallmes, a professor of radiology at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. After one month, both groups had experienced a similar, and significant, reduction in pain. "Like every other trial, patients with vertebroplasty gained substantial benefit. Pain was cut almost in half," Kallmes said. "To our shock and amazement, however, there Bvlgari watches was no difference in pain relief, function or quality of life between the groups." The second study, done in Australia, used essentially the same methodology with 78 participants. Again, there were significant and similar declines in pain and other measurements in both groups six months after surgery. "We conclude that the procedure seems to work but not apparently because of the cement," Kallmes said. It could be the placebo effect or something as simple as the effect of the novocaine on the bone, breaking the cycle of pain, he added. Kallmes is currently enrolling patients in a trial to see if novocaine on the bone gives the same benefit as vertebroplasty. But even now, many Jaeger LeCoultre watches physicians do not favor vertebroplasty as the first-line treatment. "I think we should take the middle road," Kallmes said. "We should discuss with the patient in a completely informed manner what the options are, and I think we have options. I still counsel patients that they should try ongoing medical therapy but I don't think it's unethical to do the procedure at this point. I think it's suboptimal." "I always try bracing and analgesics and physical therapy to try to get the patients to feel better without any intervention at all," Toussaint added. "But if those measures don't work, I still think it is an option." Also, Toussaint noted, "a lot of Tissot watches patients can't get their insurance companies to pay for medications that are more effective for osteoporosis treatment because they're expensive and new, but they will pay for the surgery."

Ahmadinejad Sworn In for 2nd Term

Thu, 06 Aug, 2009

BEIRUT, Lebanon — With his adversaries boycotting the ceremony and a vast cheap watches deployment of police officers standing guard outside, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was sworn into office on Wednesday for a second term as president, almost two months after an election that divided the nation and set off Iran’s deepest crisis since the Islamic Revolution 30 years ago. There were scattered protests in the streets around the Parliament building in replica watchesTehran, where the ceremony took place. But with thousands of riot police officers and Basij militia members patrolling the capital, the million-strong rally called for by the opposition failed to materialize. The inauguration ceremony itself exposed deep rifts in Iran’s ruling elite. Many seats were empty, with most of Parliament’s reform faction boycotting the event, according to Parlamaan News, a reformist Web site. Several reformists who did attend walked out as the president began his speech. Leading opposition figures, including the Cartier watches presidential candidate Mir Hussein Moussavi and the former presidents Ali Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani and Mohammad Khatami, also stayed away. Subway stations and shops around the Parliament building were closed, in a sign of concern about possible violence. Mr. Ahmadinejad must form a cabinet in the next two weeks, and his choices will signal much about the direction his second term will take. He is likely to face rising dissent from within his own conservative camp, as he did last month during a heated fracas over his first appointments. His government will also be struggling to put down a defiant opposition movement that maintains that his landslide Chopard watches June 12 re-election was rigged, and has continued to mount street protests. That task may grow harder as the school year and athletic seasons start next month, providing new opportunities for mass rallies. But for all the challenges facing him, Mr. Ahmadinejad remains firmly in control, with the clear support of Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who formally endorsed his presidency in a religious ceremony on Monday. He has the backing of a large parliamentary Bvlgari watches majority, the powerful Revolutionary Guard, and the silence — if not the open support — of Iran’s clerical establishment. “I, as the president of the Islamic republic of Iran, swear before the holy Koran and the Iranian nation and God to be the guardian of the official religion, the Islamic republic and the Constitution,” Mr. Ahmadinejad intoned as he took the oath of office. A brief film shown before the ceremony highlighted Iran’s scientific achievements, including the Jaeger LeCoultre watches cloning of sheep and the launching of the Omid satellite. In a brief inauguration speech, Mr. Ahmadinejad made clear that he viewed his re-election as a mandate to move aggressively on a variety of issues, including plans to rebuild Iran’s troubled economy and reform the subsidies system. He also spoke contemptuously about the Western countries that had refused to congratulate him on his election victory. “No one in Iran is waiting for your congratulations,” he said. “The people of Iran care neither for your grimaces nor for your congratulations and smiles.” Secretary of Tissot watches State Hillary Rodham Clinton, asked about the inauguration during a news conference in Kenya, where she began a seven-nation Africa tour, said, “Engagement is still on the table with the Iranians,” though that does not mean the United States is not considering other options. She added a word of admiration for Iran’s opposition movement, saying, “We appreciate and admire the continuing resistance.” The opposition movement persists, but in recent days the authorities have stepped up efforts to intimidate and silence it. On Tuesday, Mir Hamid Hassanzadeh, the director of Mr. Moussavi’s Web site, was arrested, Iranian news agencies reported. Meanwhile, a mass trial of more than 100 reformists is under way. As the trial opened last weekend, some senior opposition figures were shown on state television delivering humiliating “confessions” in which they said there had been no election fraud, and detailing foreign-led plots to bring down the Iranian government with a Audemars Piguet watches “velvet” revolution. Such confessions are familiar from earlier trials, and defendants and human rights groups say they are almost always obtained through torture. Prosecutors have warned that anyone questioning the legitimacy of the trial — as many opposition figures have — could in turn be prosecuted. Some senior lawmakers have hinted in recent days that Mr. Moussavi and other opposition leaders could be arrested soon, though it is impossible to tell if that is only a scare tactic. But the opposition does not seem to have been cowed. In recent weeks, as news emerged of protesters who died in prison after being arrested, Mr. Moussavi and others spoke out more forcefully than ever before, accusing the government of savage and criminal acts. The anger spread to some prominent conservatives, prompting a number of conciliatory efforts by the government, including the release of more than 140 prisoners and the closing — at the personal order of Iran’s Mont Blanc watches supreme leader — of a detention center.

U.S. identifies remains of pilot missing in Persian Gulf War

Mon, 03 Aug, 2009

Reporting from San Diego -- The remains of a Navy pilot shot down at the onset of the Persian Gulf War -- the first U.S. combat casualty of the 1991 conflict -- have been recovered by Marines in western Iraq cheap watches and identified by military specialists. The findings, based on dental records, appear to finally bring to an end the mystery of just what happened to Navy Capt. Michael Scott Speicher. Then-Defense Secretary Dick Cheney had announced that Speicher was the first U.S. serviceman to die in the war, but the military's inability to locate his body resulted in unceasing speculation and controversy. Over the years, Speicher's official status was changed from "missing in action" to "missing in action/body not recovered" to "missing in action/captured." Successive presidents, secretaries of Defense and secretaries of the Navy wrestled with the mystery and a paucity of Cartier watches information. Some politicians in Washington expressed exasperation with the military and CIA. At one point, rumors circulated that the father of two was alive and being held prisoner by Saddam Hussein. The uncertainty led some of Speicher's friends as well as several powerful politicians to assert that the military had broken its promise to never leave a fallen comrade behind. Finally, nearly 15 years after the wreckage of Speicher's plane was found in the desert west of Baghdad, Marines got a tip leading them last week to the remains, which had apparently been buried by Bedouin tribesmen. The remains were flown to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where they were identified on Saturday as those of Speicher by specialists at the military mortuary. "The teeth are a match, both visually and radiographically," the military said in a statement Sunday. Speicher's family in Chopard watches Jacksonville, Fla., released a statement thanking the Navy for not abandoning the search. "We will be bringing him home," they said. The family also said they believe the controversy has led the military to be more vigilant about searching for soldiers' bodies: "Although nothing can fill the void left by Capt. Speicher's death, we find some solace in having transformed the search process, so that no serviceman or woman is ever, ever, left behind again." President Obama called the news "a reminder of the selfless service that led him to make the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom." Former President George H.W. Bush, who was commander in chief during the Gulf War,, said, "We already knew he was a Bvlgari watches hero, one who helped lead our way to a historic victory in the Gulf, but now his family and countrymen know -- and history will finally record -- that he was one of the very first patriots to give his life in the liberation of Kuwait." Speicher, who was known by his middle name, Scott, was 33 when he died. He left behind his wife, Joanne; daughter, Megan, then 3; and son, Michael, 1. Speicher's father, Wallace, was a Navy pilot during World War II who died in a military plane crash in the U.S. Adm. Gary Roughead, chief of naval operations, notified Speicher's family on Saturday. "The Navy will never give up looking for a shipmate, regardless of how long or how difficult that search may be," he said. Speicher"s F/A-18 Hornet was shot down Jan. 17, 1991, the first night of the war, while on a mission over Anbar province. In 1995, after the receipt of information from a Qatari military official, investigators with the Pentagon and the International Committee of the Red Cross found the wreckage of Speicher's plane. Iraqis handed over a Jaeger LeCoultre watches flight suit with the name tag cut out. But no remains were found. In 2001, President Clinton said based on some information, it was possible Speicher "might be alive." Navy Secretary Gordon England in 2002 said he believed the Iraqi government knew what had happened to Speicher but was refusing to help the U.S.

8 Power Foods to Protect Your Health

Fri, 31 Jul, 2009

Here's some food for thought: You can eat your way to better health. Sure, if you fill your plate with fruit, veggies, whole grains and lean protein, you'll slim down. But certain menu options pack more nutritional punch than cheap watches others and some have downright super powers when it comes to staving off cancer and other diseases. Help yourself to a few of my favorite health-boosting bites and learn why choosing these can help you live a longer, stronger, happier life. POWER FOOD: Cherries Way more than just pie filler, cherries are the piece de resistance of the fruit world. They have more flavonoids, aka powerful antioxidants, than almost any other food analyzed by the USDA. Cherries, both sweet and tart, are particularly rich in anthocyanins, micronutrients that may jump-start the immune system and mop up disease-causing free radicals. What this means: They may have the ability to ward off cancer. Other research suggests they may also reduce inflammation associated with arthritis and gout. TRY THEM: Fresh cherries are ripe now (the season runs from May through August), but frozen and dried versions are Cartier watches equally nutritious. Toss a fresh bag into the freezer for a sweet, cool treat; add tart dried cherries to salads; or try topping pancakes with the canned, no-syrup-added kind. POWER FOOD: Black tea You don't always have to go green: Black tea, the type in your basic bag, may offer similar protection from heart disease and some cancers as its highly-praised cousin; people with heart disease who drank it daily for a month saw a 50 percent improvement in the functioning of impaired blood vessels, a study from Boston University reports. And another study, from Rutgers University in Bvlgari watches New Brunswick, New Jersey, found that a compound in black tea triggers colorectal cancer cells to destroy themselves. TRY IT: Sip it hot at breakfast or cool down with an iced version at lunch. To brew your own, use boiling water and steep for three minutes to get the most antioxidants. Worth noting: Decaf varieties are lower in antioxidants, while bottled and instant teas have barely detectable levels. Instead, make it yourself and drink it fresh--time in the refrigerator depletes tea's powers. POWER FOOD: Celery This traditional diet staple is a great source of potassium, a nutrient that helps reduce blood pressure and regulate the Chopard watches balance of fluids and minerals in the body. Most Americans get less than 50 percent of the suggested 4,700 milligrams a day. People usually use bananas as their go-to potassium source, but four medium stalks of celery deliver about the same amount of potassium as a 105-calorie banana for a mere 24 calories. The crunchy crudite also contains compounds called phthalides, which moderate blood pressure, too. TRY IT: For a quick, healthy snack, stash precut celery sticks immersed in a tub of ice water in the fridge (the cool bath keeps them at their crunchiest). Dip in hummus for an extra dose of fiber. Add celery to soups, stews and stir-fries. Jaeger LeCoultre watches Tissot watches Audemars Piguet watches Mont Blanc watches

Cashing In That Clunker Is No Easy Ride

Wed, 29 Jul, 2009

Caveat clunker. The government’s cash-for-clunkers program appears to be reviving the moribund car market. But even with Uncle Sam providing the cheap watches trade-in allowance on junky old gas guzzlers, consumers still have to shop aggressively. And the program’s complicated rules can be an obstacle. A case in point: The list of clunkers eligible for $3,500 or $4,500 government vouchers just got changed by the Environmental Protection Agency. The EPA late last week changed the mileage ratings for about 100 models, just as another government agency, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, was finishing and releasing its 136-page long rulebook for the cash-for-clunkers Bvlgari watches program. The last-minute changes pushed the official mileage estimates for certain models above 18 miles per gallon, rendering them ineligible for the government clunker voucher program. The agency hasn’t release details of which models were affected by the late change. The EPA characterized its review of the mileage calculations for more than 30,000 vehicle models as a “monthlong quality assurance and quality control effort.” Consumers who expected deals earlier this month believing that their old cars were eligible for the government’s scrapping allowances—only to discover that the new EPA figures cut them out—might not use such neutral terms. So there’s Caveat No. 1: You must be certain that your vehicle qualifies for the program. The EPA says combined city/highway Tissot watches mileage of your “clunker” has to be 18 miles per gallon or less. Look it up on www.fueleconomy.gov. The car must be “drivable,” and it has to have been registered and insured by the same person for one year. Caveat No. 2: The government clunker voucher isn’t a “rebate” from the manufacturer or the dealer. It’s a substitute for the trade-in value of your car. If your vehicle is worth more than $4,500—the maximum allowance under the federal plan—you should trade the vehicle in as usual, or sell it on your own. Check the used value of your vehicle at www.nadaguides.com or one of the major consumer shopping sites. Under the NHTSA rules, the dealer is obligated to disable any vehicles turned in for a federal scrapping voucher by putting sodium silicate in the engine. (Think sugar in the gas tank. Except nastier.) Then the vehicle goes to a junkyard. You, meanwhile, will negotiate the purchase price of a new vehicle knowing that the dealer is getting $3,500 or $4,500 from the federal Treasury to reduce the purchase price you pay. But the dealer may also have discounts from the manufacturer in Audemars Piguet watches hand that can lower the price still more, and the margin between the window sticker price and the “invoice” price is still there. Chrysler LLC, for example, is trumpeting that it will discount vehicles up to $4,500 on top of the clunker allowance. Most other manufacturers have less generous discount offers or lease deals in the market. In short, bargain hard, as always. Caveat No. 3: Financing for a new vehicle could be tricky if the individual involved has credit issues. Still, dealers say they are able to work out deals because the clunker money functions as a customer’s down payment. “We have seen a lot of cases where people have never bought a new car. They can get a loan because there’s equity in the deal” in the form of the government voucher, says John McEleney, chairman of the National Automobile Dealers Association and a multifranchise retailer based in Clinton, Iowa. Caveat No. 4: If you want in on the clunker program, consider moving soon. Inventories of unsold vehicles are as low as they have been in years, following months of production cuts by the major auto makers. All signs point to a renewed Cartier watches effort by auto makers to raise prices—either by scaling back discounts, raising sticker prices or both. “For once it’s true, you’ll never get a better price than right now,” says Mike Jackson , chief executive officer of AutoNation Inc., the No. 1 U.S. auto-dealership chain. It’s early days for the clunker program, Mr. Jackson says, but the strong early response suggests the government effectively has given permission for consumers to go car shopping—even those who don’t plan to trade a clunker for a tax-funded voucher. If there is a sustained sales bounce, pickings at the major brands could get thin. The government has $1 billion worth of vouchers to hand out, good for about 250,000 vehicles. But that’s only about a week’s worth of U.S. Jaeger LeCoultre watches new vehicle sales. The chances look good that the money will run out before the scheduled Nov. 1 end date for the program. You can roll the dice on whether Congress will add more to keep the party rolling. But that clapped-out 1998 Ford Explorer may not have a more eager buyer than President Barack Obama is right now. MICROSOFT, YAHOO SAID TO CLOSE SEARCH DEAL Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT) and Yahoo (NSDQ: YHOO) have sealed a search pact after months of negotiations and could formally announce the agreement as soon as Wednesday, according to multiple news reports. Some reports indicate that the deal calls for Microsoft to handle search queries, possibly through its new Bing "decision engine", on Yahoo sites as well as its own in exchange for upfront and ongoing payments. Yahoo would also reserve the right to continue to sell text-based search ads alongside some of the queries. Microsoft and Yahoo have not commented on the reports. Yahoo shares rose 1.29% in Tuesday trading, to close at $17.22. Microsoft shares gained 1.56%, to $23.47. Yahoo Chopard watches last week reported that Q2 revenues declined 13% year-over-year to $1.57 billion. Earnings per share increased 11% to $0.10 on net income of $141 million. Yahoo in recent weeks has beefed up its search properties, either in an effort to become a stronger, standalone competitor or to better position itself for a partnership arrangement. The company last week unveiled its new Front Doors homepage. It offers direct links to popular sites like Facebook, Twitter, Ebay, and others. The links can be added to a new "My Favorites" column that appears on the home page's left hand side. Earlier this month, Yahoo introduced its news Search Pad feature. Still in beta testing, it gives users a platform on which they can create notes based on their search results, share the information with friends, family, or business associates, and save the results for future use. Google presently controls about 65% of the U.S. search market, while Microsoft owns only about 8% of the market, according to the most recent numbers from ComScore. Yahoo, the number two player, held 20% of the market, as of May. Despite Google (NSDQ: GOOG)'s Mont Blanc watches dominance, a pact between Yahoo and Microsoft would likely draw at least some level of regularly scrutiny.

WRAPUP 3-Ousted Honduran president sees U.S. support waning

Mon, 27 Jul, 2009

(For full coverage of Honduras, click on [nN28343997]) * Ousted president says Clinton not taking firm stand * Zelaya Bregue supporters disheartened, many heading home * Costa Rica's Arias says his plan is best solution (Adds Zelaya quotes on military, Clinton) By Sean Mattson and Esteban Israel EL PARAISO, Honduras, July 26 (Reuters) - Disheartened supporters of Manuel Zelaya trickled home from the Nicaraguan border on Sunday and the ousted Honduran president complained that U.S. condemnation of his Bvlgari removal from power was waning. The United States, Latin American governments and the United Nations have demanded Zelaya be returned to power, but U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton criticized him as "reckless" when he took a few steps onto Honduran soil on Friday in a symbolic gesture in front of international media. Zelaya hit back at Clinton on Sunday for the second time in two days, complaining she had stopped using the term "coup" to describe his Chopard removal. "The position of the Secretary Clinton at the beginning was firm. Now I feel that she's not really denouncing (it) and she's not acting firmly against the repression that Honduras is suffering," he told reporters. Honduran troops manning checkpoints have prevented several thousand demonstrators from staging a show of support for the leftist leader at the border since Friday. Six miles (10 km) from the border, 100 weary protesters milled around the coffee town of El Paraiso, a far cry from the massive outpouring of public backing Zelaya had called for. "We're going to Concord head back to Tegucigalpa where most of the people are," said teacher Lilian Ordonez, wiping away tears. "We have to change our strategy. ... People are angry but we don't have weapons and against a rifle, we can't do anything." A couple of hundred Hondurans who managed to reach the border were camped out in Nicaragua with Zelaya, holed up in the town of Ocotal on Sunday planning his next move. ZELAYA URGES MID-RANKS TO RESIST GENERALS In comments carried live on pro-Zelaya Radio Globo, he urged mid-level military officers to mutiny against their generals, who Corum he said had betrayed Honduras for money. The Honduran Congress and Supreme Court had accused Zelaya of trying to extend presidential term limits. Roberto Micheletti, who was appointed interim president by Congress, and the head of the joint chiefs of staff, Romeo Vazquez Velazquez, say Zelaya's removal was legal since he was acting against the Constitution. The Supreme Court ordered his arrest and Congress backed his removal. "As commander in chief of the Dior armed forces, I ask patriotic soldiers to think of their children, think of their families and to rebel against Romeo Vazquez," Zelaya said. The Honduran military issued a statement on Saturday expressing support for the negotiating process and affirming respect for civil institutions and the Constitution -- a move seen as partly a response to reports in pro-Zelaya media of unease in the middle ranks of the military. U.S. President Barack Obama has cut $16.5 million in military aid to Gucci Honduras but has yet to take harsher measures, and there are growing tensions with Zelaya, a close ally of Venezuela's anti-American president, Hugo Chavez. Obama is in a difficult position. He does not want to show U.S. support for rightist coups, but some Republicans say he has already done too much for the ousted leftist. "It's been very clear from the outset that (the Obama administration) didn't really like Zelaya anyway," said Vicki Gass, an analyst with the IWC Washington Office on Latin America. "This wishy-washiness on their part is giving the impression that they are backing away from their original stance," she said. The U.S. State Department said Zelaya is expected to visit Washington on Tuesday but it was unclear from his aides whether he would make the trip and who he would meet if he does go. STAND-OFF OR A DEAL? Micheletti seems to Jaeger LeCoultre believe he can resist international pressure until elections in November and the world will accept the new order when a new president takes office in January. The alternative is a negotiated solution under pressure from Washington, likely modeled on a proposal by Costa Rican President Oscar Arias. In an interview with El Pais published on Sunday, Arias said his plan remained the only option. While he said the coup must be reversed, he added that it was unrealistic for Zelaya to demand an unconditional return. The Micheletti Longines government says it is open to some parts of the Arias plan, but not the return of Zelaya as president. The chiefs of staff have much to lose if Zelaya does return as president, since their position would be weakened if there is an admission that they acted illegally in removing him. Zelaya's relations with Oris the military were tense before the coup. Just days before he was removed from power, he fired the military chief of staff after the army refused to help him run an unofficial referendum on extending his mandate. In the capital, Tegucigalpa, tensions bubbled up at the funeral of a man found dead in El Paraiso on Saturday in unclear circumstances. It was unclear how he died but Zelaya supporters blame police. Mourners burned a police car and beat two police officers, a Reuters photographer on the scene said. Leaders of the Patek Philippe pro-Zelaya movement said a small explosive device went off outside a building where they were meeting, breaking windows but causing no injuries. Aubertine Takes A Pass On Congress

Fri, 24 Jul, 2009

The Senate Democrats must be heaving a sigh of relief; their colleague, Sen. Darrel Aubertine, has finally reached a decision about his political future, and he has chosen not to make a bid for the catwalk soon-to-open NY-23 House seat. Here's his statement, which arrived in my in-box at 6:15 p.m. - one hour after the 5 p.m. deadline by which the 11 Democratic county chairs had asked interested candidates to submit their resumes: "There has been a lot of classima speculation as to whether I would run in a special election for the 23rd Congressional District." “My priority must continue to be the work I have started in the state Senate, representing Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence counties. My commitment is to the people of the 48th Senate District and has been all along. Before I could even consider the possibility of diamant serving another eight counties, I had a duty to finish out this year’s session." "This seat in Congress belongs to the people who live in these 11 counties, not any elected official or political party." “Unfortunately, the National Republican Party has viewed the seat differently. National Republicans have hampton city demonstrated their belief that party registration matters more than the issues by spending hundreds of thousands of dollars to attack and vilify me." "They never mentioned the important issues we care about here in the 23rd, whether it’s our military and Fort Drum, border security and international trade, agriculture, energy and the economy of the future, or rural healthcare. “It’s no small wonder why the Washington Republicans are going extinct, and contributors should hampton classic question why the money they’ve given was squandered here for no good reason at all. “I support the process that the Democratic Party has put in place to come up with a candidate to run for the expected vacancy in the 23rd Congressional District. I’m certain the 11 county chairs involved in the process will continue to move toward finding a qualified candidate who understands the issues here and will embark on an honest campaign that puts Linea Watches people before politics.” A Washington, D.C. source told me Aubertine had been expected to run and both the White House and the DCCC were excited about him, believing him to be the strongest possible candidate to take over a seat that has been in GOP hands since the 1800s. . But, according to this source, Aubertine changed his mind sometime between last weekend and Tuesday following a private chat with Gov. David Paterson, Sen. John Sampson, and Sen. Malcolm Smith. "The speculation is that he Bvlgari Bvlgari Assioma Watches cut a deal with them and they offered him something he couldn't turn down," the source said. "He went into that meeting in one place and came out in another. We totally wanted him. He's gold up there (in the North Country). Everyone else is second string." A source familiar with Aubertine's thinking insisted that was not the case, saying the senator was pleased with the reforms enacted at the end of the Senate stalemate and decided he could get more Bvlgari Bvlgari Ergon Watches done as a marginal member in a closely-divided chamber (Read: one that needs to be kept happy and protected) than as a lowly House freshman. From a practical standpoint, this sends the Democrats back to the drawing board at a time when the GOP already has a candidate - Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava, who landed the nomination yesterday. When I spoke to state Bvlgari Bvlgari Rettangolo Watches Democratic Chairwoman June O'Neill yesterday, she brushed off the suggestion that the Republicans are getting the jump on this race. She noted the seat technically isn't vacant yet, since Rep. John McHugh still needs to be confirmed, and also pointed out that the GOP had a candidate (Assemblyman Jim Tedisco) weeks before the Bvlgari Bvlgari Bvlgari Watches Democrats settled on Scott Murphy for the NY-20 special election, and Murphy won anyway. China Fears Ethnic Strife Could Agitate Uighur Oasis

Thu, 23 Jul, 2009

KASHGAR, China — Ali the tour guide seemed nice enough and his English flowed with Patek Philippe grammatical perfection — a useful attribute in a city where most people speak a Turkic language that sounds nothing like Chinese. “Sure, I will take you wherever you want to go, but first I have to call my friend and see if he will drive us,” Ali said, turning away. After a quick exchange, he hung up the phone and politely announced that his friend was Panerai actually a government minder who would soon be arriving to guide the would-be clients away from any potential trouble. The destination his “friend” had in mind? The airport, where the reporters, subject to a ban on foreign journalists, would be escorted onto the next flight out of town. “Sorry,” Ali said as the Rado journalists prepared to flee in a taxi. “But if I didn’t make that call, I would get in big trouble.” Kashgar, the ancient Silk Road oasis and backpacker lure, has been besieged by fear since ethnic rioting about two weeks ago claimed at least 197 lives in Urumqi, the capital of this northwestern expanse known as the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Although the two Raymond Weil cities are separated by about 700 miles of punishing desert and snow-draped mountains, the authorities are especially anxious about potential unrest in Kashgar, a city of 3.4 million that is 90 percent Uighur, a Muslim minority that has long had a mercurial relationship with the Han Chinese who govern Xinjiang. The authorities have good reason to be skittish. Last August, at least 16 military police officers were killed in an attack here, unnerving the government just as dignitaries and athletes were arriving in Beijing for Tissot watches the 2008 Olympics. The police called it a terrorist strike by two Uighur men armed with explosives and machetes, though some witnesses later challenged that version of events. In the early 1990s, Kashgar was also the scene of bombings and demonstrations; at least 21 people were killed and thousands were arrested during one particular army crackdown. The city has long been a crucible for Vacheron Constantin Uighur self-determination, even if nationalist aspirations were never the same after a Chinese warlord vanquished the newborn East Turkestan Republic, a short-lived nation that called Kashgar its capital for a few months in 1933. Although it is rapidly being bulldozed in the name of modernization, Old Kashgar and its ancient dusty warrens remain the heart of Uighur Zenith culture and a beguiling draw for tourists. To China’s leadership, however, the city is also an incubator for those seeking to create a Uighur homeland by the borders of Pakistan, Afghanistan and a handful of other predominantly Muslim countries whose names end with “stan.” This time around, Kashgar has Piaget been relatively quiet. During the turmoil in Urumqi, a crowd of 200 people tried to protest outside the city’s Id Kah Mosque, the largest in China, and were quickly dispersed by the police, according to Xinhua, the state news agency. But while journalists in Urumqi can roam with relative freedom, the few foreign reporters who Louis Vuitton made it to Kashgar were promptly hustled out of town. “The situation may look calm now, but it could change at any second,” a local government official told Mark MacKinnon, a writer for The Globe and Mail, a Canadian newspaper, as he and his colleagues were sent to the airport. The uncertainty and sense of Mont Blancisolation have been only magnified by the blocking of access to the Internet and shutdown of text messaging and international phone service that has severed communications in Kashgar and the entire region. The blackout has been especially challenging for export companies, banks, factory owners and academics, and some of them say they have been told that Internet and phone service will be curtailed until at least October, when China celebrates the replica watches 60th anniversary of the Communist revolution. “I’m expecting a group of Swiss tourists next week, but I have no way of knowing whether they’re still coming,” said one beleaguered tour operator. Like Urumqi, which has been flooded with soldiers since July 5, Kashgar is patrolled by young men in military camouflage, many of whom ride through the wholesale watches city day and night, their green army trucks draped with ostensibly calming slogans like “National Separatists Are Our Enemy.” But the government’s most effective weapon against potential trouble is largely unseen: the Rolex neighborhood committees made up of appointed Uighur cadres and citizens who, driven by fear or ambition, are ready to do the government’s bidding. How Homophobia Fuels Africa's AIDS Crisis

Wed, 22 Jul, 2009

New research has challenged the long-standing belief that HIV and AIDS in Africa primarily affect heterosexuals. A Datejust study published on the website of the British medical journal Lancet found that men who have sex with other men are up to 10 times more likely than their heterosexual counterparts to be infected with the virus - which suggests that the fight against AIDS on the continent may be undermined by widespread homophobia. Researchers from Oxford University, the Population Council of Ghana and the Kenya Medical Research Institute Day Date reviewed AIDS studies conducted over the past few years and concluded that male-male sex was a major blind spot in AIDS research and policy in Africa. Men having sex with other men is far more common in Africa than is socially acknowledged, owing to widespread hostility toward homosexuality, and the phenomenon there is underreported in research and largely Daytona ignored in public-health responses to the pandemic. The researchers compiled statistics from a small but growing number of studies conducted in various African countries in recent years that included estimates of HIV prevalence among men who have sex with other men. (See pictures from Africa's AIDS crisis.) Many of Africa's gay communities operate largely underground. Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe set the tone of the public discourse on homosexuality throughout much of Explorer the continent back in 1995, when he remarked at the Harare Book Fair that he found it "repugnant" that "... homosexuals, who offend both against the law of nature and the morals of religious beliefs espoused by our society, should have any advocates in our midst and even elsewhere in the GMT Maste world." Male-male sex is a criminal offense in some 31 sub-Saharan African countries; it even draws the death penalty in a few - on the books, at least, if hardly ever in practice. In January 2009, gay-rights activists were shocked when a Senegalese judge sentenced nine gay members of an HIV/AIDS awareness group to eight-year jail terms for "indecent conduct and Ladies Datejus unnatural acts." (From TIME's archives: Read "An Identity Forged in Flames," a story on gays and AIDS education.) The sentences were subsequently overturned, but the case highlights one reason it has been so difficult to reach gay men with AIDS-prevention messages: most of them don't want to be Pearlmaster found. One consequence of the enforced invisibility of gays, the report concluded, is that many African men live double lives in which they are far likelier to engage in risky sexual behaviors with other men, raising the danger of further spreading the virus in their heterosexual relationships. "In countries that protect sexual minorities, those groups are able to access services and reduce their risks," the Submariner lead researcher, Adrian Smith, tells TIME. "But as long as behaviors remain criminalized and stigmatized, you're on the one hand asking a group to identify themselves and be integrated into a health system - but then the state still poses structural obstacles to prevent them doing that." In Uganda, whose government is considering a law to criminalize the distribution of literature with Yacht Master homosexual content, gays are often the targets of fire-and-brimstone sermons and public rallies. Ugandan activists say that if the law is passed, it would prevent them from educating people about safe sexual behaviors - another issue highlighted in the report. The report found that gay men are Constellation more likely than heterosexuals to engage in risky behaviors, perhaps because AIDS-prevention messages are aimed at heterosexuals. "There are many men in Africa who think that anal sex is safe, because they have never been told that it's not," says Smith. While activists in some countries say that attacks against gays are becoming increasingly widespread and Constellation Double Eagle vociferous, gays are also beginning to speak out with greater determination. Gay-rights activists in Botswana, for example, have been fighting a loud and public battle to decriminalize homosexuality - an offense now punishable by up to seven years in prison. Increasingly, activists are targeting anti-gay laws as an obstacle to combating HIV/AIDS, according to reports from MASK, a gay-and-lesbian-advocacy group based in South Africa. In most African De Ville countries, however, public opinion remains intolerant of homosexuality. Far more devastating than the laws, it is often the hostile attitudes of churches, families and communities that keep most gays in the closet, Smith says. "How do you access a population that doesn't want to be found?" he says. "That is the long-term question." It is a problem growingly recognized by international AIDS groups and even sometimes by Double Eagle national governments. Senegal may have been among the more intolerant African countries by measure of social and legal tolerance of homosexuality, but it is ironically also one of the few to offer a national HIV program that specifically addresses male-male sex. Florida Drops Budget Plan That Favored Prep Football

Mon, 20 Jul, 2009

As school districts nationwide grapple with severe budget cuts, one sport has weathered the Zenith recession better than most: football. State high school athletic officials in Florida, Nevada and Delaware have exempted the popular and lucrative sport from widespread schedule cuts aimed at easing the financial burden on schools. But under threat of a federal lawsuit, officials in Florida on Wednesday abandoned Piaget scheduling cuts to other sports. The lawsuit argued that exempting football was a violation of the gender-equity law known as Title IX. Opponents of the scheduling, which also excluded competitive cheerleading, complained that it disproportionately favored boys: about 40,400 male football players were unaffected by the cuts, compared with about Louis Vuitton5,500 female cheerleaders. In an emergency meeting held two days before the parties were due to appear in court — and after the Justice Department filed a brief supporting the Mont Blanc plaintiffs Tuesday — the board of the Florida High School Athletic Association voted unanimously to revert to its original policy that permitted more robust scheduling. Individual school districts will still be able to decide whether to limit their games. In a statement released after the vote, Greg Zornes, president of the association’s board of replica watches directors, stood by the board’s initial decision for schedule cuts earlier this year. “I believe what we did in April was the best thing for the membership then, and given the situation, what we did today was in its best interest now,” he said. The decision drew cautious praise from Nancy Hogshead-Makar, the lawyer for the parents who sued. “My clients are going to be thrilled because they’re Rolex Watches going to get their games back,” said Hogshead-Makar, a four-time Olympic medalist in swimming and a professor at the Florida Coastal School of Law. She said she was open to a settlement. In seeking to dismiss the case, the Omega Watches association argued in part that the action did not discriminate because football is technically a co-ed sport — even though only eight girls participate statewide. “I saw no ‘aha’ moment,” Hogshead-Makar said. “I saw nothing that would indicate that Title IX and gender-equity laws would always be in the background of Tissot Watches whatever decision-making they have.” The Florida association trimmed the schedules in April after several of the state’s 67 school districts proposed various cuts to their athletics programs. Some considered eliminating junior varsity programs, others canceled entire seasons and still others planned to do away with Panerai Watches sports like golf or tennis. “What we saw was a patchwork-quilt solution,” said Roger Dearing, the executive director of the association. “It was getting to be impossible to try to schedule events.” In an attempt to help Piaget-Watches districts contain costs while maintaining a competitive schedule, the association voted to reduce all varsity schedules by 20 percent, and all sports below the varsity level by 40 percent. Because football has only 10 games per season, Dearing said, the sport was excluded. Cheerleading, only recently recognized as a competitive sport, has no limits on the number of meets, but Dearing Zenith Watches said most teams typically participate in only a handful of events. “The board was in no way acting in a discriminatory way against girls,” Dearing said. “We were reacting to a crisis in the state of Florida.” Florida’s is one of Baume Mercier Watches several state high school associations that has limited athletic schedules in an effort to cut costs. In June, the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association voted to reduce most athletic schedules by 10 percent. It chose to exempt football, as well as soccer, wrestling, swimming and diving. In May, the Delaware Bvlgari Watches Interscholastic Athletic Association trimmed schedules, exempting varsity football, according to news reports. Not every state has spared football. New York cut football schedules to 9 games from 10. Maine reduced the number of all teams that can advance to the playoffs, including football, said Bruce Howard, a spokesman for the Concord Watches National Federation of State High School Associations. Howard said districts nationwide have dealt with budget cuts in a range of ways, including requiring that students pay for sports and accepting corporate sponsorships. “All of the country is hurting in some form or fashion,” Howard said. “There’s little reason to think that high school athletics won’t be affected as well.” Limiting football is out of the Corum Watches question in many parts of the country, including Florida, where games are played before sold-out crowds. The sport more than pays for itself, said Jay Beesemyer, assistant director of the Nevada association. “The fact of the matter is, schools need these football games to have the other programs that they currently have,” he said. Hogshead-Makar said that Longines Watches under the law, cost cannot be a factor in gender-equity cases. “ ‘We don’t have enough money for gender equity’ has been tried as a defense and has lost,” she said, noting that previous court cases and legislative proposals to exempt football from Title IX have failed. Even though the board reversed course, the schedules are likely to remain through the fall, with Louis Vuitton Watches reductions in everything but football and cheerleading. Many school districts established their schedules in the spring, after the board’s initial decision. Wednesday’s vote establishes only a maximum number of competitions. Bill Vogel, superintendent of the Seminole County School District in Mont Blanc Watches central Florida, said many school districts will be eager to avoid transportation costs and other expenses associated with extra games. The decision Wednesday, he said, “will probably have a minimal effect.” Hogshead-Makar said she Oris Watches intended to turn her attention to whether individual districts are complying with the federal law.

NBA salary cap lowered, team profits sink

Fri, 17 Jul, 2009

On the heels of a decrease in the NBA salary cap last week from $58.68 million in 2008-09 to $57.7 million in 2009-10, NBA commissioner David Stern has reported that less than half of the Zenith30 teams in the league were profitable during the past season. The report came during a meeting of the NBA Board of Governors on Tuesday, according to SportsBusiness Daily, an online sister publication of the Sacramento Business Journal. Stern said the league expects revenues to decrease during the upcoming season as teams are Piagetlowering ticket prices and sponsorship deals are being scaled back. Early estimates are that the league will see revenue decreases during the 2010-2011 season by as much as 5 percent. The Sacramento Kings reportedly lost money this past season. The meeting also resulted in the formation of a Louis Vuitton labor committee that will negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement with the NBA Players Association. Negotiations will begin Aug. 10. The current agreement expires at the end of December 2010.

Clamor grows over CIA secrets

Mon, 13 Jul, 2009

Reporting from Washington -- Democratic lawmakers criticized former Vice President Dick Cheney on Sunday for allegedly ordering that a CIA counter-terrorism program be kept secret from congressional leaders, with two Chopard Watches senators questioning the legality of such concealment. A top Democrat called for an investigation. Republicans were far more circumspect, but some acknowledged the White House should have briefed Congress. Exactly what the secret intelligence program was remained a mystery, but sources said the CIA had opened an IWC Watches internal inquiry. It is unclear how wide an investigation lawmakers would like to see, but the latest controversy could fuel demands for an examination of the CIA's relationship with Congress during the Bush administration. Congressional Democrats -- in particular, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi of San Francisco -- have accused the CIA of wholesale watchesmisleading Capitol Hill about key elements of its now-canceled harsh interrogation program, which included the simulated drowning technique known as waterboarding. Republicans, who have attacked Democrats for criticizing the CIA, are likely to be dead set against any such inquiry. Also Sunday, GOP lawmakers criticized Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. for reportedly considering the appointment of a special Rolex prosecutor to look into accusations that the CIA exceeded Bush administration rules when using harsh interrogation techniques. Democrats expressed support for Holder, but some continued to advocate their own alternatives to investigate allegations of wrongdoing by the Bush administration. But Democrats were united in condemning Cheney for allegedly ordering the CIA not to reveal details of the still-secret Omega intelligence program. A Cheney spokeswoman declined to comment. CIA Director Leon E. Panetta canceled the program June 23, shortly after learning of it, and he immediately called special sessions with lawmakers to discuss the initiative. Sources have refused to provide any details about what the program involved or what it was meant to achieve, but have said it was on a continuum between foreign intelligence collection and covert action. It was put in Breitling place in after the Sept. 11 attacks, but never became fully operational. "A lot of people thought they were Jason Bourne and came up with ideas," a former senior CIA officer said, referring to the fictional super-spy and government assassin. "There were programs that were kind of wild that were considered in 2001, but to my knowledge, within six months . . . people kind of gave up on those ideas." Appearing on "Fox News Sunday," Sen. Tag Heuer Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the intelligence committee, said Panetta told congressional leaders that Cheney ordered the agency to withhold details of the program from Capitol Hill. She called that a "big problem." "I think that if the intelligence committees had been briefed, they could have watched the program, they could have asked for regular reports on the program, they could have made judgments about the program as it went along," Feinstein said. "That was not the case, because we were kept in the Cartier dark. That's something that should never, ever happen again." She called the failure to brief Congress "outside the law." Although the law requires that congressional committees be "kept fully and currently informed" on intelligence activities, there is some latitude for highly sensitive programs and routine ones. Senate Majority Whip Richard J. Durbin (D-Ill.) told ABC's "This A Lange & Sohne Week" that Congress should investigate whether Cheney or others ordered that the program not be disclosed to lawmakers. Congressional leaders can protect the existence of secret programs, Durbin said. Not disclosing the program, he added, violated the Constitution's checks and balances. "To have a massive program that is Audemars Piguet concealed from leaders in Congress is not only inappropriate; it could be illegal," Durbin said.

Zelaya vows return to Honduras despite arrest threat

Thu, 02 Jul, 2009

TEGUCIGALPA (Reuters) - Ousted President Manuel Zelaya vowed on Tuesday to return to Honduras flanked by foreign leaders to serve the rest of his term, defying a warning from a Concord Watches hostile interim leadership that he will be immediately arrested. Zelaya gathered further international support as he addressed the United Nations and Organization of American States. He said the Argentine and Ecuadorean presidents and the U.N. General Assembly and OAS chiefs would accompany him on a trip back to Honduras on Thursday. Upping the ante in what is Corum Watches already Central America's biggest political crisis in decades, the interim government set up after Sunday's military coup said Zelaya would be captured if he returned. The coup against Zelaya -- a timber magnate toppled in a dispute over his push to allow presidential re-election beyond a single four-year term -- has been greeted by a tide of condemnation from President Barack Obama to Zelaya's leftist allies in Latin America. But he remains a Longines Watches divisive figure in Honduras, an impoverished coffee, textile and banana-exporter of some 7 million people. Several thousand demonstrators rallied in favor of his ouster in the capital Tegucigalpa on Tuesday, after two days of rowdy anti-Zelaya protests near the presidential palace. But in a development that could offer an opening for talks on ending the stand-off, the interim government Louis Vuitton Watches said it would send a delegation of politicians, business leaders and lawyers to Washington on Wednesday for talks on the crisis. Roberto Micheletti, sworn in as caretaker president by Congress soon after Sunday's coup, announced the mission after Zelaya traveled to New York and Washington to address the United Nations and Organization of American States on Tuesday. U.S. officials said Zelaya would Mont Blanc Watches likely meet State Department officials while in Washington. Zelaya insisted he will return to complete his mandate, which ends in early 2010, and said he did not intend to run for president again. "I am going back to Honduras on Thursday, I'm going to return as president," Zelaya said Oris Watches after the U.N. General Assembly urged member states to recognize only his government. CHAVEZ ALLY In office since 2006, Zelaya had upset conservative elites with his growing alliance with Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a left-wing firebrand who is championing an old-style revolutionary brand of socialism across Latin America. Central America's first military coup since the Cold War came after Zelaya angered Congress, courts Rado Watches and the army with a push for constitutional changes to allow presidential re-election. Ruling in firefighters case fuels critics of Sotomayor

Tue, 30 Jun, 2009

Reporting from Washington -- The Supreme Court's reversal Monday of a discrimination ruling involving a group of white Connecticut firefighters has provided critics of high court wholesale watches nominee Sonia Sotomayor with some fresh ammunition. Republican senators and conservative groups contend that the justices' 5-4 ruling on Ricci vs. DeStefano represents a rebuke of Sotomayor's handling of the case. She was a member of a three-judge panel on the federal appeals court in New York that heard the action and Rolex sided against the white firefighters. "This case will only raise more questions in the minds of the American people concerning Judge Sotomayor's commitment to treat each individual fairly and not as a member of a group," said Sen. Jeff Sessions of Alabama, the ranking Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Sotomayor's confirmation Omega hearings before the committee are scheduled to begin July 13. The New Haven, Conn., firefighters sued under federal civil rights laws after the results of a promotion test were thrown out. The city feared it would face a lawsuit from black and Latino firefighters claiming the tests had a discriminatory effect on minorities. The white plaintiffs lost at the trial court and before Sotomayor's appeals court panel, but Breitling prevailed Monday in the Supreme Court. Sotomayor's critics have contended that the way her panel disposed of the case -- through a three-paragraph, unsigned opinion -- was as bad as the decision itself. By contrast, the Supreme Court's ruling Monday was nearly 100 pages. "Not only did Judge Sotomayor misapply the law, but the perfunctory way in which she and her panel dismissed the firefighters' meritorious claims of unfair treatment is particularly troubling," said Senate Minority Tag Heuer Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.). But Sotomayor's supporters jumped to her defense Monday, saying that she and the other members of the panel were simply applying the governing federal law at the time to the claims of the white firefighters, which allowed New Haven to discard the civil service exam. "It's clear she is a modest judge," said Sen. Charles Cartier E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), a member of the Judiciary Committee. "She is not busy overturning cases. She is not imposing her own opinions on the law. She is following the law rigorously." Schumer said that the narrow division on the high court -- four justices backed the appeals court's result, including Justice David H. Souter, whom Sotomayor would replace -- "bolsters the fact that she is a mainstream judge." Marge Baker, an executive vice A Lange & Sohne president of the liberal advocacy group People for the American Way, said that in fashioning a new legal standard for such discrimination claims, the five-justice majority took a more radical approach than Sotomayor had. "You either want judges to follow the law, or you don't," Baker said. "If you want them to follow the law, you do what Judge Sotomayor and the panel did. If you want judicial activism . . . you do what the court did today." Conservative legal expert Jonathan Audemars Piguet Adler, a professor at Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, said the Supreme Court decision wasn't likely to lessen Sotomayor's odds of being confirmed. But, he said, "the fact that it took the court nearly 100 pages to resolve this question does cast a shadow over the 2nd Circuit panel's handling of the case, and may raise questions about her judgment." In a separate case, the Supreme Court on Baume Mercier Monday indirectly put more pressure on senators to act quickly on Sotomayor's nomination. It ordered a high-profile campaign-finance dispute to be re-argued Sept. 9 -- almost a month before the regular start of the term.

WASHINGTON — The National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday evening that it had begun an investigation into two recent incidents La Tradition Breguet Watches involving Airbus A330s, the same kind of plane as the one operated by Air France that crashed over the Atlantic Ocean on June 1. In both cases, the system for sensing speed through the air malfunctioned, a Marine Watches problem that apparently occurred on the Air France plane shortly before it crashed. The safety board said one incident to be investigated took place on a TAM Airlines flight from Miami to São Paulo, Brazil, on May 21, and the other on a Reine de Naples Watches Northwest Airlines flight between Hong Kong and Tokyo on June 23. Both planes landed at their destinations without injuries or damage. The pilots of the TAM flight lost information on speed and altitude in cruise flight. The plane went down early on June 1 about 620 miles off the coast of northern Brazil with 228 people on board.

Thu, 25 Jun, 2009

SAN ANTONIO (AP) -- When Tim Duncan found out Richard Jefferson didn't return a phone call from Gregg Popovich after the Spurs coach traded for the 8905 Watches Bucks star, he fired a text message to his new teammate. "Don't get traded twice in one day." Popovich, gruff? Not after this sweet of a deal for San Antonio. The Spurs introduced Jefferson on Wednesday after getting the scoring swingman from Milwaukee the previous day in exchange for parting with three Other Watches aging bench players -- an easy swap for the NBA's oldest team, which needed younger legs and offense and got both in one deal. "I didn't understand how fortunate I was when I came into the Atmosleague and went to two straight finals." The Spurs gave up Bruce Bowen, Kurt Thomas and Fabricio Oberto to get the 6-foot-7 forward from the Bucks, who were eager to unload the $29.2 million owed to Jefferson over the next two seasons. Milwaukee wanted financial freedom and to avoid the NBA's luxury tax. The Spurs, on the other hand, will be hit with the luxury tax for getting Jefferson. But it's a price San Antonio was willing to pay with its window for a Grande Automatique fifth championship in the Duncan era shrinking. Duncan will be 34 and Manu Ginobili 32 by the time the playoffs roll around next spring. Neither could stay healthy last season, and Ginobili missed the playoffs entirely while the Dallas Mavericks needed just five games to roll past the Spurs in the first round. It was the earliest playoff exit since 2000 for San Antonio. Tony Parker is 27 and grew into one of the NBA's marquee guards last season, but he and a Grande Taille hobbled Duncan was all San Antonio had to throw at the Mavericks. Jefferson is the complementary scorer the Spurs needed. Popovich said Jefferson won't carry the offensive burden like he did in Milwaukee, and will be tasked with defending the best players on the court and getting to the foul line when needed. "When I played with Vince (Carter), there as wasn't much of a Master Calendar scoring need ... When I played in Milwaukee, there was a little bit more of a leadership scoring role," Jefferson said. "The one thing I've been very fortunate to have is versatility. If they need me to play defense or score or shoot a 3 or post up, I'm able to accomplish that." Jefferson represents the player the Spurs would have pursued during the NBA's anticipated free agent sweepstakes next summer. Popovich said Jefferson was as good a player as the Spurs might have picked up in 2010, and Master Compressor that waiting could have been a gamble. "You can't just bank on" that, Popovich said.
