Experts say radical measures won't stop swine flu

Fri, 20 Nov, 2009

LONDON – Health experts say extraordinary measures against swine flu — most notably quarantines imposed by China, where entire planeloads of passengers were isolated if one traveler had symptoms — have failed to contain the disease. Despite initially winter ugg boots declaring success, Beijing now acknowledges its swine flu outbreak is much larger than official numbers show. China's official count of nearly 70,000 reported illnesses with 53 deaths is dwarfed by estimates of millions of cases with nearly 4,000 deaths in the United States, a nation with about a third of China's population. Dr. Michael O'Leary, WHO's top representative in China, says there has been a dramatic spike in Chinese swine flu cases recently and those reported by the government are only "minimum numbers." "We have new cases occurring all the time," he told The Associated Press last week. "There's always more deaths than we could possibly know about." He said there is little data to prove interventions like mass quarantines and school closures slow down disease transmission. "To draw a causal link ... is not always possible," O'Leary said, adding that WHO expected a disease as contagious as swine flu to spread regardless of what measures countries impose. China's Health UGG Tasmina Braid Sandals Minister Chen Zhu defended his country's aggressive quarantine policy, telling the AP on Wednesday that the measures helped slow the spread of the virus long enough for China to develop a vaccine, which authorities are now scrambling to administer. "With initial efforts of containment, actually we not only reduced the impact of the first wave to China, but we also won time for us to prepare the vaccine," Chen said in an interview on the sidelines of a meeting of the Global Forum for Health Research in Havana. He said China was vaccinating 1.5 million people a day against swine flu as part of a massive effort to try to reach as many as 90 million people — about 7 percent of the country's population — by the end of the year. "We know this is not enough for a population of 1.3 billion, but at least for the vulnerable people, for the students, people with underlying basic diseases and ... for pregnant women, we have vaccines," Chen said. On Thursday, Dr. UGG Infant Erin Boots Zhong Nanshan, director of Guangzhou's Institute of Respiratory Diseases, said in a local newspaper he believed government officials were covering up swine flu deaths to appear as though their handling of the epidemic had been successful. "I totally don't believe the current number of swine flu deaths that have been reported in the country," Zhong said in Guangzhou Daily. He was one of the doctors who openly challenged China's 2003 cover-up of its outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome. China has acknowledged swine flu is now widespread despite its aggressive attempts at containment. Earlier this month, Feng Zijian, head of China's Center for Disease Control and Prevention, said the country's reported figures are only "a very small portion" of the total number of cases. He said China is UGG Classic Tall Boots now focusing on confirming severe cases and no longer tests every person with a fever for swine flu. He said the official figures were based on cases confirmed in outbreaks or at monitoring sites like hospitals. Other nations that have carried out draconian swine flu policies indicate they have little effect in containing the disease. Ukraine, which reported more than 250,000 suspected cases last week, closed all schools and universities, and advised people not to travel and to stay away from public places. In Mongolia, all bus travel has been suspended and gatherings of more than 40 people have been banned. Still, both countries are now facing major swine flu outbreaks. Argentina, Singapore, Malaysia and Egypt have also enacted radical swine flu prevention measures — and all have been gripped by widespread outbreaks. When WHO declared swine flu to be a pandemic in June, it described the virus as "unstoppable." It advised countries not to close their borders or impose mass quarantines, warning such measures would be useless since people often spread flu viruses before UGG Ultra Short Boots developing any symptoms.

Obama won no concessions from China on points at issue

Wed, 18 Nov, 2009

President Barack Obama on Wednesday wraps up a three-day visit to China that's left him keenly aware of the limits of his administration's leverage over this economic powerhouse on issues from currency exchange rates to human rights. Obama has little leverage over China , in part because the U.S. depends on the Chinese to finance the U.S. government's growing debt, and because of the perception in China , which for years was an economic nonentity, that the U.S. is troubled and China is ascendant. Administration officials said that the China stop, part of a four-nation Asia tour that will conclude Thursday in South Korea , was a success because it laid the groundwork for a more focused U.S.- China alliance to tackle everything from global warming to nuclear weapons containment. China gave no evident ground on the points at issue, however. "The meetings and the focus from a substance standpoint really have been aimed at coordinating like never before on the key global issues that together are headline issues for the United States ," said Jon Huntsman , the U.S. ambassador to China . White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said: "I did not expect, and I can speak authoritatively for the president on this, that we thought the waters would part and everything would change." Obama summed it up this way in a joint appearance Tuesday with winter ugg boots President Hu Jintao : "The relationship between our two nations goes far beyond any single issue." Hu and Obama announced potentially significant new agreements on advancing clean energy and scientific research. Both committed to work toward global warming initiatives and reiterated a mutual desire to contain the nuclear ambitions of North Korea and Iran . In two areas in which the United States wants to shift China's positions — valuation of the Chinese currency and the Chinese government's censorship practices and human rights abuses — no advances were announced, however. The U.S. is the world's largest economy; China's the world's most populous nation, with the third largest gross domestic product. China has helped keep the American economy afloat through the recession. Its huge trade surplus with the United States — and the $800 billion worth of American government debt that it holds — is economically unsustainable and leaves the U.S. dependent on Beijing's financial favor, however. Obama has called for China to stop undervaluing its currency and adopt a more market-based standard as one way to begin reducing the trade imbalance. "I emphasized in our discussions, and have others in the region, that doing so based on economic fundamentals would make an essential contribution to the global rebalancing effort," Obama said. Hu didn't mention currency policy in his public statement. Instead, he jabbed the U.S. for trade policies that he said held China back. "I stressed to President Obama that under the current circumstances, UGG Classic Cardy Bootsour two countries need to oppose and reject protectionism in all its manifestations in an even stronger stand." Obama also said he'd reiterated in private to Hu that there are certain "universal" human rights that should be available to all people, including a nation's ethnic and religious minorities. Standing side by side with Hu, Obama mentioned Tibet , saying that while the U.S. recognizes it as part of China , the Chinese government should resume talks with representatives of the Dalai Lama, the spiritual leader of the government in exile. Hu remained expressionless throughout Obama's remarks. Other aspects of Obama's visit also were sobering. Even as he arrived Sunday night, human rights organizations reported that the Chinese government was rounding up and arresting dissidents to ensure that they couldn't reach out to the U.S. The following day, Hu allowed Obama's town-hall meeting, the first such event for a Western leader in China , to air on local television in Shanghai — but not nationally. Hu didn't agree to any news conferences at which reporters could ask questions. Chinese authorities even detained a Beijing -based reporter for CNN for displaying an "Oba-Mao" T-shirt that depicted Obama dressed as the late communist founder of the People's Republic of China . While Obama is popular with many Chinese, the public's reception of him hasn't been nearly so effusive as the rock-star treatment he's gotten in other parts of the world. There were no chants of "O-ba-ma!" at the town hall meeting. Instead, 400 students selected by authorities at their universities awaited his arrival in silence, sitting rigidly and displaying little emotion. Shen Yi , an assistant professor of international politics at Fudan University UGG Classic Mini Boots in Shanghai , said that Chinese interest in Obama during last year's election wasn't about his stance on currency or human rights in China , but about a broader expectation that over time he'd somehow reshape America's role in the world. That, the professor said, will take time to come into focus. "The popularity of candidate Obama is mainly rooted in a simple idea: He will make a real change in the U.S., especially in foreign policy." Despite the risks and shortcomings of the visit, Obama enjoyed colorful interactions and historic sights on his first visit to the nation of 1.3 billion people. He toured Beijing's Forbidden City, long the seat of China's emperors, on Tuesday, wearing a leather jacket with fur trim, and described the grounds as "spectacular." The president and his entourage ascended 30 steps and went down another 30 into the courtyard. Then they walked up a steep stone stairway and entered the Tai He Dian, or "Hall of Supreme Harmony," built in 1420 and reconstructed in 1695. Later, Obama attended a state dinner at which the music program included a UGG Sundance II Boots rendition of Stevie Wonder's "I Just Called to Say I Love You," a recognition by the Chinese of one of Obama's favorite performers. On Wednesday, Obama was to meet with Premier Wen Jiabao and visit the Great Wall. UGG Fluff Flip Flop UGG Amelie Suede Sandals

Tue, 17 Nov, 2009

Suspicions were raised when dismembered parts of a human body were found near a bus stop in the outskirts of the Russian city of Perm, 1,150 km (720 miles) east of Moscow. Three homeless men with previous criminal records have been arrested on suspicion of setting upon a foe with knives and a hammer before chopping up his corpse to eat, local investigators said in a statement on their UGG Tall Metallic Boots . Mon, 16 Nov, 2009

At least in Hollywood, which saw the apocalyptic thriller 2012 rake in $65 million, according to studio estimates from box office tracking firm Nielsen EDI. The debut was $5 million more than many analysts projected and finished an apocalyptic triumvirate for the master of disaster Roland Emmerich, who also directed Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. Though Emmerich has never been a critical darling –2012 earned UGG Bailey Button Boots recommendations from just 38% of critics, says RottenTomatoes.com – his latest doomsday flick marked the second highest debut of his career. Tomorrow opened to $69 million and did $187 million. Sony led a canny marketing campaign to whip up interest among young viewers, urging them to research the real Mayan calendar that ends in 2012, which some have taken to mean the world will end. A Christmas Carol enjoyed a strong hold from its debut, dropping just 26% and conjuring up $22.3 million, bringing its 10-day total to $63.3 million. George Clooney's The Men Who Stare at Goats was third with $6.2 million, bringing its total to $23.4 million. The only other major newcomer, the Phillip Seymour Hoffman comedy Pirate Radio, did $2.9 million in limited release, meeting its modest expectations. Lou Dobbs says he is leaving CNN

Thu, 12 Nov, 2009

Longtime CNN host Lou Dobbs shocked his viewers Wednesday by announcing that he would be leaving the network effective immediately. The daily host of "Lou Dobbs Tonight" addressed his viewers after giving the day's headlines and told them Wednesday's show would be his final time in the anchor chair. "This will be my last broadcast," he said. He said CNN had allowed him to be released from his winter ugg boots contract early and that he was considering a number of options for the next stage in his career. "I will let you know when I set my course," he said. He said he wanted to "contribute positively to a better understanding of the great issues of our day." CNN President Jon Klein in a statement hailed Dobbs' "appetite for big ideas, the megawatt smile and larger than life presence he brought to our newsroom." "With characteristic forthrightness, Lou has now decided to carry the banner of advocacy journalism elsewhere," Klein said. "We respect his decision." The longest-running anchor on CNN's air, Dobbs was one of the nation's leading financial journalists before turning his program in a more opinionated direction. His persistent advocacy against illegal immigration angered many. "I'm the last of the original anchors here on CNN and I'm proud to have had the privilege of helping to built the world's first news network," he said. CNN's average prime-time audience was third behind Fox and MSNBC during October, Air Max shoes and it was even eclipsed by sister network HLN among younger viewers, according to the Nielsen Co. Missing US soldier's body found in Afghan river

Thu, 12 Nov, 2009

KABUL – Military wholesale NFL jerseys divers have found the body of a U.S. paratrooper who disappeared last week along with another soldier as the two tried to retrieve airdropped supplies from a river in western Afghanistan, NATO said Wednesday. Relatives said they believe Spc. Benjamin Sherman of Plymouth, Mass., died after jumping into the river to try to save his comrade, who was also swept away by the current. Afghan and international forces are still searching for the second missing paratrooper in the remote, Taliban-infested province of Badghis, which borders Turkmenistan. He has not been identified. Sherman's wife, Patricia, said military officials told her that the circumstances of his death remain under investigation, but his family believes Spc. Sherman died trying to rescue his friend. "I know Ugg Classic Short Boots that day he jumped into the river to try to save his comrade was not because he didn't just see another soldier in the water, he saw his brother," said his sister, Meredith Sherman. "He didn't jump in because he was trained to, but because that's what his heart told him to do." The two paratroopers, both from the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, disappeared Nov. 4 in the Bala Barghab area of Badghis during a routine resupply mission. Local police had said the two were swept away by the river as they tried to recover airdropped supplies that had accidentally fallen into the water. During the first days of the search, intense fighting broke out with militants in the area. Eight Afghans — four soldiers, three policemen and an interpreter — were killed, while 17 Afghan troops and five American soldiers were wounded. Afghanistan's Ugg Classic Tall Boots Defense Ministry had said at the time that the deaths and injuries had been caused by "an air attack by NATO forces" during the fighting. NATO has said authorities are investigating whether some of the casualties were caused by a friendly fire airstrike. Separately, the Swedish military said five of its troops were wounded and their Afghan interpreter was killed when their vehicle was hit by a roadside bomb in northern Afghanistan Wednesday. Army spokesman Torbjorn Gustafsson said the soldiers were on patrol with Afghan security forces about 25 miles (40 kilometers) west of the town of Mazar-e-Sharif at the time of the explosion. Sweden has about 450 troops in Afghanistan. The Ugg Fluff Flip Flop increasing casualty rate for international forces, coupled with concerns over the Afghan administration's commitment to fighting rampant corruption, has led to waning public support for the Afghan war in several countries that have troops there. Opinion polls in Australia, whose 1,550 troops make up the largest non-NATO contingent in Afghanistan, have consistently shown that the war is unpopular there. Eleven Australian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since the 2001 invasion, the most recent in July. Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd paid a surprise visit on Wednesday — which was Remembrance Day — to his country's troops stationed in the southern province of Uruzgan, where they are mainly focused on training an Afghan National Army brigade. Rudd, who ousted conservative leader John Howard in 2007 elections, fulfilled a campaign promise to pull Australia's troops out of Iraq but has consistently said Australia will keep troops in Afghanistan until the threat of terrorism spreading from the country ends. "We in Ugg Infant Erin Boots Australia are here for the long haul. We from Australia will remain for the long haul," Rudd said during ceremonies remembering Australian war dead.

Ford to put air bags into back seat belts of SUV

Fri, 06 Nov, 2009

Air bags have long been mounted in the steering wheel, dashboard and sides of vehicles. Now, they're in the seat belts. Ford Motor Co. plans to introduce seat belt-mounted air bags in the back seat of the 2011 Ford Explorer sport utility vehicle, which will hit the market next fall. Ford says it's the first automaker to mass produce the technology. The belts have a cylindrical air bag that stretches from the buckle to the shoulder and fits inside a pocket sewn into the belt. The car sends a signal that releasesUGG Sundance II Boots the bag, which inflates more gently than a front air bag, so it's safer for children. Srini Sundararajan, the Ford engineer who was chiefly responsible for developing the device, says the wider belts and bags help distribute crash forces across the occupant's chest, so there's less chance of serious injury. It also supports the head and neck. "The top two lifesaving devices today are the seat belt and the air bag. This combines them into one great feature," Sundararajan said. Clarence Ditlow, head of the nonprofit Center for Auto Safety, says the belts are particularly effective at protecting the elderly, who are more frail. "You often end up with broken ribs" during a crash with a conventional seat belt, Ditlow said. Ford has been working on the technology for aUGG Tasmina Braid Sandals decade and had to overcome numerous challenges bringing it to market. Front air bags are powered by a device that generates hot gas. They deploy very quickly because they need to cover a greater distance before they reach the driver or passenger. Seat belt air bags don't have that distance to cover, so they can deploy more gently, using cold gas technology, although Srini said they're still fully deployed in a tenth of a second. Ford also did a significant amount of testing to make sure the bags would protect children, even if they're sleeping and their heads are drooping. The belt also works with booster seats. Sue Cischke, Ford's group vice president for sustainability, environmental and safety engineering, wouldn't say how much the belts with air bags will cost, but she did say the technology is expensive. They will be available as an option at first, since some drivers — particularly those without children — may not feel they need them. "With any new safety technology, you have to do a lotUGG Tasmina Sandals to educate the consumer," she said. "We're not sure what people will value with this." Cischke said the Explorer was chosen for the new seat belts because it's popular with families and has also been a platform for other safety introductions, such as side-curtain air bags and stability control. Cischke said the price could come down substantially if Ford decides to put the seat belts on other vehicles. Edward DeSmet, a technical seat belt specialist at Ford, said test subjects found the padded belts even more comfortable than regular ones. He hopes that leads more people to use them. U.S. seat belt usage in back seats is still at a dismal 60 percent, compared with 83UGG Short Metallic Boots percent in the vehicle as a whole, DeSmet said. ugg outlet UGG Ultra Tall Boots UGG Ultra Short Boots UGG Tall Metallic Boots

Ford to put air bags into back seat belts of SUV

Ohio woman: I got away from serial killing suspect

Fri, 06 Nov, 2009

CLEVELAND – Suspected serial ugg boots killer Anthony Sowell seemed like a "civilized person" on the April evening that Tanja Doss went up to his third-floor bedroom for a beer — until, she said, he leapt up and began choking her and threatening to kill her. The 43-year-old woman told The Associated Press on Thursday that she survived a night of terror through a combination of calm and cajoling, prayer and trickery. But when she escaped the next morning, she didn't tell police. Her past conviction on a drug charge, she said, made it unlikely they'd take her seriously. "Now, I feel bad about it," she said, "because my best friend might be one of the bodies." Police and a cadaver Cincinnati Bengals Jerseys dog re- entered the home Thursday where Sowell apparently lived among the reeking, rotting corpses of 10 women and the paper-wrapped skull of another in a basement bucket. The ex-Marine, who served 15 years in prison for attempted rape, is being held without bail on five aggravated murder charges. Just days after her own escape, Doss was helping search for her friend Nancy Cobbs. Now Cobbs is among about two dozen missing women whose friends and family fear fell victim to Sowell. Only two victims have been identified so far — Tonia Carmichael, 52, of Warrensville Heights and Telacia Fortson, 31, of Cleveland. Doss believes she Carolina Panthers jerseys only narrowly escaped the fate of those dug up from Sowell's yard. She had met Sowell in 2005, after his prison release, but didn't know the real reason for his sentence. She found him to be "a civilized person, sitting outside drinking beer, a nice person." So she didn't hesitate to join him for a drink. "And then he just clicked. I'm sitting on the corner of the bed and he just leaped up and came over and started choking me," she said. Shocked, Doss said she lay back and tried not to struggle. "He said, 'If you want to live, knock three times on the floor.' And I knocked on the floor." Still holding her throat, he told her using several profanities that she could be "dead in the street" and no one would care. Sowell made her Baltimore Ravens Jerseys strip and lay on the bed, she said, but did not attempt to rape her. Doss said she curled up in a ball and tried to talk him down, saying things like, "Why you gotta act like that?" Then she prayed to herself, and eventually, both fell asleep. She awoke in the morning with Sowell acting as if nothing had happened, she said, asking whether she wanted something from the store.

New group helps US monitor swine flu shot safety

Tue, 03 Nov, 2009

WASHINGTON – Independent fashion ugg boots health advisers begin monitoring safety of the swine flu vaccine on Monday, an extra step the government promised in this year's unprecedented program to watch for possible side effects. Decades of safe influenza inoculations mean specialists aren't expecting problems with the swine flu vaccine, because it's made the same way as the regular winter flu vaccine. But systems to track the health of millions of Americans are being tapped to make sure — to spot any rare but real problems quickly, and to explain the inevitable false alarms when common disorders coincide with inoculation. U.S. health Baltimore Ravens Jerseys officials have spotted no concerns to date, Dr. Bruce Gellin, head of the National Vaccine Program Office, told The Associated Press. A specially appointed working group of independent experts will track the vaccine's safety, too. Although the group will deliberate in private meetings, starting Monday, its charge is to raise a red flag if members feel the feds miss anything. "Given the Dallas Cowboys Jerseys rapidity with which this particular vaccine was rolled out, there seems to be an extra-special obligation to make sure things remain as uncomplicated as they have in the past," Dr. Marie McCormick of the Harvard School of Public Health, who chairs the working group, told the AP. Vaccinations Ugg Bailey Button Boots against the new flu, which scientists call the 2009 H1N1 strain, have begun more slowly than the Obama administration had hoped, with long lines for the nearly 27 million doses divided around the country so far. More is on the way, even as swine flu cases and hospitalizations continue to rise.

CIT files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection

CIT said in a statement that its bondholders overwhelmingly opted for a prepackaged reorganization plan which will reduce total debt by $10 billion while allowing the company to continue to do business. The Chapter 11 filing is one of the biggest in U.S. corporate history, following Lehman Brothers, Washington Mutual, WorldCom and General Motors. CIT's bankruptcy filing shows $71 billion in finance and leasing assets against total debt of $64.9 billion. A prepackaged bankruptcy, which has the support of major bondholders, speeds up the process of restructuring CIT's debt and could allow it to exit court protection by the end of the year. In addition to reducing its debt, CIT said the plan cuts cash needs over the next three years,Max Tn(Special Edition) which should help it return to profitability more quickly. "The decision to proceed with our plan of reorganization will allow CIT to continue to provide funding to our small business and middle market customers, two sectors that remain vitally important to the U.S. economy," said Jeffrey M. Peek, chairman and CEO. Peek has said he plans to step down at the end of the year. CIT's move will wipe out current holders of its common and preferred stock. That means the U.S. government will likely lose the $2.3 billion it sunk into CIT last year in return for preferred shares to prop up the ailing company. The government could have lost billions more, however, had it not declined to hand over more aid to the company earlier this year. Treasury Department spokesman Andrew Williams said the government will be closely monitoring the bankruptcy proceedings, but acknowledged that "recovery to preferred and common equityholders will be minimal." Common stockholders set to lose their investment include FMR Women Air Max LtdLLC of Boston with a 9.9 percent stake in CIT and San Diego-based Brandes Investment Partners LP with a 9.7 percent equity position, according to CIT's filing. CIT has been trying to fend off disaster for several months and narrowly avoided collapse in July. It has struggled to find funding as sources it previously relied on, such as short-term debt, evaporated during the credit crisis. The company received $4.5 billion in credit from its own lenders and bondholders last week, reportedly made a deal with Goldman Sachs to lower debt payments, and negotiated a $1 billion line of credit from billionaire investor and bondholder Carl Icahn. But the company failed to convince bondholders to support a debt-exchange offer, a step that would have trimmed at least $5.7 billion from its debt burden and given CIT more time to pay off what it owes. Analysts warned that the bankruptcy could add to the uncertainty around loans for the nation's small businesses, especially retailers, which make up a significant portion of Women’s Max 90 shoesCIT's clients and are already struggling with tight credit markets. CIT is the financier for about 2,000 vendors that supply merchandise to more than 300,000 stores, many of which are gearing up for the critical holiday shopping season. They rely on the lender to cover costs ranging from paying for orders to making payroll. Any disruption caused by bankruptcy could wreak havoc on their operations, Joe Alouf, a partner with Eaglepoint Advisors, a crisis management company that is partly owned by Kurt Salmon Associates. "CIT is the 600-pound gorilla in the industry," Alouf said. But CIT has already pulled back sharply on its lending to businesses as it tried to preserve cash. According to its most recent quarterly earnings report, the company originated just $4.4 billion worth of new business during the first six months of 2009 compared to $11.3 billion in Women’s Max Ltd 2 the first half of 2008. CIT said Sunday the bankruptcy filing is only for the holding company, and won't affect its operating subsidiaries, such as Utah-based CIT Bank. CIT has filed a number of first-day motions to allow it to continue operations, including requests to keep paying wages and other employee benefits and to pay its vendors and certain other creditors in full. The company has retained Evercore Partners and FTI Consulting as its financial advisers and Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP as legal counsel in connection with the restructuring plan and Chapter 11 cases. Houlihan Lokey Howard & Zukin Capital Inc. Air Max serves as financial adviser, and Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP serves as legal counsel to the bondholders' committee. g>
