MINNEAPOLIS – Several big airlines this week have added $10 surcharges for most of their tickets for travel on three busy days around Thanksgiving and New Year's holidays. American and United airlines added the charge for most of their fares for travel on Nov. 29, the Sunday after Thanksgiving, as well as Jan. 2 and 3. On Friday US Airways Group Inc. matched the surcharge, and FareCompare.com said Delta Air Lines Inc. added it, too. Spokespersons for Southwest Airlines Co. and ContinentalMax 89 Airlines Inc. both said they had not added the surcharge. Rick Seaney of FareCompare.com noted that the Sunday after Thanksgiving is one of the busiest travel days of the year, and that the two dates in January are heavily traveled as well. He said the airlines probably added the charge rather than raise base fares because it was a quick, targeted way to charge more on busy travel days. "The bottom line this year for consumers is that it's pretty clear that if you procrastinate on your holiday travel, you're going to get stung," he said. He said holiday fares are still running 15 percent to 20 Max 90percent lower than last year, with prices to bigger cities carrying the bigger discount from a year ago. American added the charge on Wednesday and United matched on Thursday. Shares of American parent AMR Corp. rose 28 cents, or 3.6 percent, to $8.02. United parent UAL Corp. added 47 cents, or 5.3 percent, to $9.30, and US Airways Group Inc. was up 5 cents to $4.96. Delta Air Lines Inc. rose 13 cents, or 1.5 percent, to $9.05. LOS ANGELES – A surprise arrest at the Zurich airport, detention at the hands of Swiss authorities, and a high-profile extradition process that could take weeks or months. The irony is that for Roman Polanski, the acclaimed director accused of child rape three decades ago, this latest ordeal could lead to the one thing he's lacked since: his freedom. Polanski's arrest as he arrived Saturday in Switzerland for a film festival honor could potentially spur on his legal team's recent motion to dismiss charges that have dogged him since he fled the U.S. for France in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. But it could also elevate his case into an international ordeal — involving the governments of Switzerland, France, Poland and the United States — and potentially complicate his possible extradition. "The big issue is whether it would have been betterMax Tn(Special Edition) for him to negotiate a surrender when he had the chance," Loyola University law professor Laurie Levenson said. "Now it has become an international incident and the district attorney may be under pressure not to negotiate a sweetheart deal. They've gone to all this trouble of getting Switzerland involved. It could make it harder on him." Nevertheless, some believe the arrest of the 76-year-old Academy Award winner could lead to a resolution that will allow him to once again travel freely. "I think he will finally get his day in court," criminal defense attorney Steve Cron said, "and there's a good chance his case will be dismissed or the sentence will be commuted to time served." Meanwhile, Poland and France intend to make a joint Women Air Max Ltdappeal to Switzerland and the United States to have Polanski released from his detention, Polish Foreign Minister Radek Sikorski told the Polish news agency PAP. Sikorski said he and French counterpart Bernard Kouchner also plan to ask Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to offer Polanski clemency. "The good news for him is he's been living under a cloud all these years wondering who would swoop in and arrest him," Cron said. "Now he can get this thing finally worked out." Polanski, the director of such classic films as "Chinatown" and "Rosemary's Baby," reached a plea deal in 1978, but was threatened with more prison time thanWomen’s Max 90 shoes previously agreed upon and fled to France before he was formally sentenced. France has no extradition treaty with the U.S., and while he traveled throughout Europe, he avoided arrest in part because of lax policies on apprehending foreign fugitives. But in recent years, many countries have gradually tightened their efforts to find suspects abroad and extradite them. It's also not clear how hard authorities was searching for him. The Swiss Justice Ministry said in a statement that U.S. authorities have sought Polanski's arrest around the world since 2005, although he has been a fugitive much longer. "There was a valid arrest request and we knew when he was coming," Swiss Justice Ministry spokesman Guido Balmer told The Associated Press. He rejected theWomen’s Max Ltd 2 idea that politics may have played a part in the action. Previous attempts to nab Polanski when he left France were thwarted because authorities didn't learn of his travel soon enough — or Polanski didn't make the trip, said William Sorukas, chief of the U.S. Marshals Service's domestic investigations branch. "This is not the first time we have done this over the years," said Sandi Gibbons, spokeswoman for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. She said warrants had been sent out whenever rumors circulated that he would be traveling to a country outside France. In this case, the honor for Polanski's work proved to be his downfall, Gibbons said. "It was publicized on the Internet that he was goingAir Max shoes to be at the Zurich Film Festival," Gibbons said. "They were selling tickets online." Justice Minister Eveline Widmer-Schlumpf said the director will remain in Zurich until the conclusion of the extradition proceedings. The United States now has 60 days to file a formal request for Polanski's transfer, she said. A U.S. Justice Department spokeswoman in Washington declined to comment on the case Sunday. Polanski's French lawyer, Georges Kiejman, told France-Inter radio that it was "too early to know" if Polanski would be extradited. "For now we are trying to have the arrest warrant lifted in Zurich," he said. Polanski's long-running legal saga gained new momentum late last year with the release of an HBO documentary, "Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired," which claimed misconduct by the now-deceased judge who handled 1977 case and reneged on a plea deal. With the new evidence presented in the film, Polanski sent a team of lawyers to court in Los Angeles seeking dismissal of the charges. But despite acknowledging "substantial misconduct," a judge ruled that Polanski would have to appear in person to pursue his motion. Polanski's lawyers said he decided not to risk arrest on a fugitive warrant, and planned instead never to set foot in the United States. His victim, Samantha Geimer, who long ago identified herself publicly, sued Polanski and reached an undisclosed settlement. But she has since joined in Polanski's bid for dismissal, saying she wants the case to be over and at one point offering to come to court in Polanski's place to argue for dismissal. Geimer, who lives in the small town of Kilauea on the north shore of Kauai, Hawaii, could not be reached for comment Sunday. A man at Geimer's house who Air Max Tn 10identified himself as one of her sons said she wasn't home. He declined further comment. In Paris, Culture Minister Frederic Mitterrand said that he was in contact with French President Nicolas Sarkozy "who is following the case with great attention and shares the minister's hope that the situation can be quickly resolved." Mitterrand added that he was "dumbfounded" by Polanski's arrest, adding that he "strongly regrets that a new ordeal is being inflicted on someone who has already experienced so many of them." Those comments referred, in part, to the fact that Polanski, a native of France who was taken to Poland by his parents, escaped Krakow's Jewish ghetto as a child during World War II and lived off the charity of strangers. His mother died at the Nazis' Auschwitz death camp. Polanski worked his way into filmmaking in Poland, gaining an Oscar nomination for best foreign-language film in 1964 for his "Knife in the Water." Offered Max 89entry to Hollywood, he directed the classic "Rosemary's Baby" in 1968. His life was shattered again in 1969 when his wife, actress Sharon Tate, and four other people were gruesomely murdered in Los Angeles by followers of cult figure Charles Manson. Tate was eight months pregnant at the time. Eight years later, the Polanski rape case was a sensation when it broke: He was arrested for having sex with the girl, whom he had hired as a model for a photo shoot at Jack Nicholson's house while the actor was away. He was accused of giving her part of a Quaalude pill and champagne, taking her into a hot tub and having sex with her. Polanski was initially indicted on six felony counts and faced up to life in prison. Instead, he pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful sexual intercourse Max 90with a minor and the other counts were dismissed. The maximum sentence he could have faced was 50 years, although prosecutors had said at the time that the typical sentence was 16 months to three years in prison.

PARIS — Workers at a struggling heater factory in northwest France are taking it all off in a bid to save their jobs: They posed nude for a calendar to call attention to their plight. Mr. February is wearing nothing but a cardboard box. Mr. October is posed like the famed Rodin sculpture "The Thinker." Mr. April is naked but for a flag bearing the company's logo, flowing in front of his lower body. Their protest is the latest, and barest, effort by French workers to fight back at the economic downturn. Employees have locked up their bosses, threatened to blow up factories and blocked oil supplies in scattered incidents around France in recent months. After receiving the news in June that they might be laid off, the workers at the Chaffoteaux factory took a creative approach to show their displeasure. Thecheap watches company, which makes gas and water heating equipment, is facing declining demand amid a slump in real estate sales and a shift in French households away from gas heaters. Fifteen men who work at the factory in Ploufragan, 450 kilometers (280 miles) west of Paris, posed for the calendar.

Five thousand copies were printed, and 2,000 had been sold at €7 each as of Monday, three days after they were made available. Brigitte Coadic, the representative from the CGT labor union that organized the calendar, said the workers want to attract public attention to the layoffs in the hope that will help them in negotiations with the management. "In contrast to classic responses to layoffs ... we Panerai watchesaren't going to just accept fate," she said. The workers did not appear to be offering any solid solutions to the company's declining sales. Requests for the calendars have come in from cities across France, said Coadic. A Chaffoteaux spokeswoman said 207 of the factory's 251 employees may be laid off, but said that depends on further negotiations. A meeting between the management of Chaffoteaux and factory representatives is scheduled for Sept. 28, said the spokeswoman, who was not authorized to be publicly named because of company policy. She would not comment on the calendar. Ludovic L'Hostellier, 32, is "Mr. February." His nude pose is in a big box whose lid is closing on him. The box is labeled Chaffoteaux. "It represents the company closing, just like the box I'mRolex watches in," he explained by phone. He said his wife was pleased with the photos and "we have had only good reactions" to the calendar." He said if he does lose his job at the end of the year, he will look for another immediately. "We can't live without working," he said.

MILWAUKEE – Mandatory DNA profiles of at least 12,000 Wisconsin felons are missing from a statewide database, according to an audit released Wednesday. The audit was conducted after officials discovered no DNA was on file for a convicted felon now suspected in a string of Milwaukee killings. Investigators have since found that a sample was submitted in Walter E. Ellis' name, but the DNA and fingerprint belonged to a different inmate, said Wisconsin Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen. "A sample appears to have been collected by (the Wisconsin Department of) Corrections from the wrong person," Van Hollen said in a statement. The other inmate may have lied about his identity when submitting the sample, but it's unlikely that's what happened in the case of the others that are missing, said Gary Hamblin, who is administrator of the Division of Law Enforcement Services and conducted Longines watchesthe audit. "For those 12,000 people convicted of a felony, our records indicate a DNA sample has not been collected," he said. About 70 percent of those people are believed to be in custody or still under state supervision and it should be easy to gather samples from them, Hamblin said. It will take more analysis to determine how to target the other 30 percent, he said. The database has between 120,000 and 130,000 profiles, Hamblin said. Some of the missing ones may be from people convicted of felonies but sentenced to probation, meaning they never reported to prison to have a sample taken, he added. The Corrections Department is responsible for collecting samples. Hamblin's audit suggested state Department of Justice officials also should have noted Ellis did not have a complete DNA profile. "The Department of Corrections will work with the Department of Justice to make sure they have adequate procedures in place to notify us of a problem with a specimen they receive from us," said Rick Raemisch, secretary of the Corrections department.Zenith watches Ellis, 49, was named a suspect earlier this month in the slayings of at least seven women between 1986 and 2007. Authorities have said they might have focused on Ellis sooner if his DNA were in the state database, as it should have been if a sample were taken when he served an earlier prison term. Ellis pleaded no contest in 1998 to second-degree reckless injury. The state crime lab did receive a sample in 2001 that had Ellis' name on it, Van Hollen said. When it was put in the database, the system matched it to aRolex watches previous sample under a different inmate's name, so it registered as a duplicate and no profile was entered for Ellis, he said. "In its simplest terms, this is a case where a DNA sample was collected from one inmate who claimed to be a different inmate," the audit said. In hindsight, Van Hollen said, the state crime lab should have notified Corrections officials of the duplication. Ellis plans to plead not guilty to five counts of first-degree intentional homicide and two counts of first-degree murder, his attorney, Russell Jones, said Wednesday. "At this point I haven't seen the evidence, so I can't Panerai watchescomment on the defense other than 'he didn't do it,'" Jones said. Milwaukee police in May announced DNA samples taken from at least seven homicide victims linked back to a single unidentified DNA profile. Authorities arrested Ellis earlier this month after executing a search warrant at his home and saying that profile matched awholesale watches sample taken from his toothbrush. Police haven't made clear how they originally targeted Ellis as a suspect.

The IEDCR has confirmed the death of another swine flu positive patient in Dhaka, which took the official count of casualties from the special strain of influenza to three, reports bdnews24.com. Two more persons who had H1N1 symptoms died, however. "Authorities have confirmed deaths of three H1N1 positive patients so far. The most recent patient died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital''s influenza ward," Dr Mushtaque Hossain, senior scientific officer at the Institute for Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research, said on Sunday "He was, however, diagnosed as a H1N1 patient while being treated in another ward." At least 50,000 Bangladeshis are estimated to have been infected with A H1N1 influenza virus, based on confirmed cases, coming to health centres mostly on their own but very few needed hospitalisation, he said at a news briefing on the latest situation of the swine flu epidemic sweeping across the nation. Experts had previsouly said every person will not be required to take the H1N1 test. If one in the family is found to be infected with H1N1 virus, any other member suffering Patek Philippe watchessimilar symptoms should be treated for the same ailment, they said. People living in the towns and villages outside Dhaka took treatment as advised by the doctors and almost all got cured, they said. Since Tuesday last, 61 more people tested positive in H1N1 tests, which takes the total number of H1N1 infected patients after lab tests across the country to 372. But mentioning that the total number of patients in the country should be over 50,000, Dr Hossain said, "Many of the infected got well on their own. A lot took medicine at home as advised by the doctors after symptoms were apparent." He said, Nasreen, the RMG worker of Mahakhali who died in Gopalganj on Thursday, had not been infected with H1N1 virus. "We tested samples of her hair, nail etc to ascertain that." The IEDCR asked all to be careful while rushing to villageVacheron Constantin watches homes before the festival and also about mixing with own folks. The ICDDR, B has started treating H1N1 patients in full swing after setting up 12 beds in a corner of the diarrhoea ward. Space for additional patients has been kept by relocating diarrhoea patients. Dr Md Shahadat Hossain, head of the long stay unit of ICDDR, B Dhaka hospital, told reporters, "A total 39 patients, most of whom were children under five years, have been admitted to the ward to date since the ward was opened on Sept 6. "Again, many have returned home after recovery in five/six days." He said they are prepared to deal with any explosion of the situation with additional space kept to accommodate any sudden swell of patients.

Bangladesh was among the top 10 global receivers of migrant remittances in 2008, according to a newly released UNCTAD report. The Trade and Development Report 2009, released Tuesday, also said remittances will continue to provide a larger foreign exchange inflow than official development assistance (ODA) in developing countries, despite the economic downturn, reports bdnews24.com. Bangladesh came in seventh place on the list topped by India and China, according to the UN agency''s Bangladesh''s received $8.9 billion of the global total in migrant remittances of $305 billion in 2008. India received $45 billion. Over the year, global remittances registered a growth of 8.8 percent compared with 2007 despite the recession, the report said. But, UNCTAD highlighted a sharp contraction in construction and service sectors in countries that received large foreign worker populations. It also said countries where remittances accounted for a considerable share of GDP were vulnerable to recession in the host country economies. Bangladesh, however, came low on the Patek Philippe watcheslist of remittance ranked by share of GDP. Bangladesh saw $9.69 billion in remittances in FY 2008-09, compared to $7.91 billion in the previous financial year, according to central bank figures. Remittance inflow registered a monthly record in August this year, at $937.9 million, a 30 percent rise from August last year and breaking the previous high of $ 919.1 million in June last. July, however, the first month of current fiscal year, saw a dip to $886.4 million, although it was still slightly up on $885.3 million for July last year. Around 6.5 million Bangladeshis are employed in different Vacheron Constantin watches countries across the world, according to an estimate from the expatriate welfare and overseas employment ministry. LOS ANGELES – A deadly wildfire that has blackened a wide swath of tinder-dry forest around Los Angeles took another menacing turn Monday as five people became hopelessly trapped inside a smoky canyon and thousands of suburban homes and a vital mountaintop broadcasting complex grew dangerously close to being devoured by explosive, towering flames. The five trapped people refused to evacuate threatened areas and reported they were stranded at a ranch near Gold Creek, Los Angeles County sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore said. A sheriff's helicopter was unable to immediately reach them because of intense fire activity, but would try after the flames passed, he said. "What this says is, 'Listen, listen, listen,'" Whitmore said. "Those people were told to get out two days ago, and now we are putting our people in danger to get them out." Fire crews battling the blaze in the Angeles National Forest tried desperately to beat back the flames and prayed for weather conditions to ease. The fire was the replica watcheslargest of at least eight burning across California after days of triple-digit temperatures and low humidity. The fire scorched 164 square miles of brush and threatened more than 12,000 homes, but the lack of wind kept them from driving stormily into the hearts of the dense suburbs northeast of Los Angeles. Columns of smoke billowed high into the air before dispersing into a gauzy white haze that burned eyes and prompted warnings of unhealthy air throughout the Los AngelesPanerai watches area. Smoke could be seen billowing around the fabled Hollywood sign. "It's burning everywhere," U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Dianne Cahir said. "When it gets into canyons that haven't burned in numerous years, it takes off. If you have any insight into the good Lord upstairs, put in a request." The exact number of people injured or threatened by the fire was still not clear. Over the weekend, three people who refused to evacuate were burned when they were overrun by flames, including a couple who had sought refuge in a hot tub, authorities said. Fire crews set backfires and sprayed fire retardant atRolex watches Mount Wilson, home to at least 20 television transmission towers, radio and cell phone antennas, and the century-old Mount Wilson Observatory. The observatory also houses two giant telescopes and several multimillion-dollar university programs. It is both a landmark for its historic discoveries and a thriving modern center for astronomy. The fire about a half-mile away was expected to reach the mountaintop sometime Monday night, said Los Angeles County fire Capt. Mark Whaling. If the flames hit the mountain, cell phone service and TV and radio transmissions would be disrupted, but the extent was unclear. The blaze killed two firefighters, destroyed at least 21 homes and forced thousands of evacuations. The firefighters died when their truck drove off the side of a road with Zenith watches flames all around them. The victims were fire Capt. Tedmund Hall, 47, of San Bernardino County, and firefighter Specialist Arnaldo "Arnie" Quinones, 35, of Palmdale. Hall was a 26-year veteran, and Quinones had been a county firefighter for eight years. Quinones' wife is expecting and due to give birth to their first child in the next few weeks. Hall and his wife have two boys, ages 20 and 21, and was described as a family-oriented man who loved riding motorcycles. They died fighting a fire that showed no signs of subsiding Longines watchesMonday. People who fled returned to find their homes gone. "It's the worst roller coaster of my life, and I hate roller coasters," said Adi Ellad, who lost his home in Big Tujunga Canyon over the weekend. "One second I'm crying, one second I'm guilty, the next moment I'm angry, and then I just want to drink tequila and forget." Ellad left behind a family heirloom Persian rug and a photo album he put together after his father died. "I'm going to have to figure out a new philosophy: how to live without loving stuff," he said. The blaze in the Los Angeles foothills is the biggest but not most destructive of California's wildfires. Northeast of Sacramento, a wind-driven fire destroyed 60 structures Oris watches over the weekend, many of them homes in the town of Auburn. The 275-acre blaze was 50 percent contained Monday afternoon and full containment was expected Tuesday. It wiped out an entire cul-de-sac, leaving only smoldering ruins, a handful of chimneys and burned cars. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger toured the Auburn area, where only charred remnants of homes remained on Monday. At some houses, the only things left on the foundation are metal cabinets and washers and dryers. "It was embers traveling in the wind, landing on the roofs, landing on attics, getting into that home and burning the home on fire," said Daniel Berlant, spokesman for the Rado watchesCalifornia Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Some mandatory evacuation orders were lifted, but most residents are still being told to stay away while crews work to restore electricity and hose down embers. East of Los Angeles, a 1,000-acre fire threatened 2,000 homes and forced the evacuation of a scenic community of apple orchards in an oak-studded area of San Bernardino County. Brush in the area had not burned for a century, fire officials said. Flames burning like huge candles erupted between rocky slopes of the San Bernardino Mountains and the neat farmhouses below. With highs topping 100 degrees in some areas and humidity remaining low, the National Weather Service extended a weekend warning of extreme fire conditions in the central Vacheron Constantin watchesand Southern California mountains. Winds were light, which prevented the flames from roaring at furious speed into towns. In 2003, a wind-whipped blaze tore through neighborhoods in San Diego County, killing 15 people and destroying more than 2,400 homes. That fire burned 273,000 acres — or 427 square miles — the largest in state history. Overall, more than 2,500 firefighters were on the line. More than 20 helicopters and air tankers were preparing to dump water and retardant over the flames. Two Canadian Super Scoopers, giant craft that can pull thousands of gallons of water from lakes and reservoirs, were expected to join the fight later in the day. In La Crescenta, where the San Gabriel Mountains descend steeply into the bedroom suburb a dozen miles from downtown Los Angeles, 57-year-old Mary Wilson was experiencing her first wildfire after nine years of living in a canyon. Her family was evacuated twice in the past five days, she said. "We saw the flames. My daughter got really scared," she said. But she was philosophical: "You have to surrender to the natural forces when you choose to live up here. It's about nature doing its thing." Also in La Crescenta, dispatchers overnight activated a "reverse 911" system that sent a recorded evacuation warning to people, but it turned out to be a mistake. Whaling, the L.A. County fire captain, says the message applied to only a small number of residents closest to the fire but instead a large number got the sleep-shattering calls. He said he does not know how many people were involved in the call. "They pushed the wrong button," he said. Terry Crews, an actor promoting the new movie "Gamer" on KTLA-TV, talked about being forced to flee two days ago from his home in Altadena, in the foothills above Pasadena. He saw 40-foot flames, grabbed his dog and fled. "I've never seen anything like it," he said. "I'm fromPatek Philippe watches Michigan. I'm used to tornadoes ... but to see this thing, you feel helpless." "This is like 'The Ten Commandments,'" he said, referring to the movie. "You go, 'holy God, the end of the world.'" An animal sanctuary called the Roar Foundation Shambala Preserve, six miles east of Acton, was in the mandatory evacuation zone, but fire officials decided removing the animals would be "a logistical nightmare," said Chris Gallucci, vice president of operations. "We have 64 big cats, leopards, lions, tigers, cougars. ... The animals are just walking around, not being affected by this at all," Gallucci said. "But if we panic, they panic. But we are not in panic mode yet."
