Queens Terror Probe Leads to Colorado

Fri, 18 Sep, 2009

Federal investigators evacuated a suburban Denver apartment complex Wednesday to search the home of a 24-year-old immigrant from Afghanistan whose lawyer identified him as the man at the center of an investigation by counterterrorism agents in New York. Federal Bureau of Investigation officials in Denver and Washington confirmed the search at the Wildwood Free Trail 90Aurora, Colo., apartment complex, called "The Vistas at Saddle Rock," where Najibullah Zazi lives, and authorities confirmed searching the nearby home of his relatives. The search, led by the FBI's Joint Terrorism Task Force, came just two days after agents and police in New York City searched the apartments of Mr. Zazi's friends in the borough of Queens after he had visited them. In an interview before Wednesday's searches, Mr. Zazi's Denver lawyer, Art Folsom, said his client was simply "in the wrong place at the wrong time and just got sucked into this." FBI Director Robert Mueller, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and officials in Colorado all said Wednesday there weren't any indications of looming plots or attacks. "I do not believe there is imminent danger from that particular investigation," Mr. Mueller told a hearing of the Senate Judiciary Committee in Washington Wednesday. He didn't comment further, and officials have been tight-lipped about what they have described as a continuing investigation. Mr. Folsom said he had invited theNike jordan 3 FBI in Denver to interview his client. Local media reports said that interview was being conducted at the same time the searches were carried out. Mr. Zazi hasn't been charged or arrested. Sheri Hatcher, a 41-year-old neighbor of Mr. Zazi's, works from home and said she saw agents move in around 1:30 p.m. local time, followed by men in hazardous-material suits and dogs. Then an FBI agent knocked on her door, Ms. Hatcher said, telling her, "'You have to leave -- make it quick.'" Residents were allowed back in to their homes after about two hours. Agents hung large, dark tarps around the entryway to shield the apartment from view. It wasn't clear what, if anything, was found in any of the searches Wednesday. As a precaution, authorities sometimes evacuate a building and its surrounding area during a search. FBI officials wouldn't comment when asked if they removed anything in the search of Mr. Zazi's apartment. The dramatic scene that unfolded in Colorado Wednesday was the latest in a string of events surrounding the investigation, which came to light when a phalanx of agents searched three Queens apartments Monday morning. Authorities have said repeatedly the probe is in its early stages. Counterterrorism and intelligence officials have briefed members of Congress this week about the case. Two federal officials Wednesday expressed concern that the level of public attention could jeopardize any possible case. The handling of theAir jordan III case has also renewed some tensions between federal and New York law enforcement amid concerns that New York investigators may have moved too soon to conduct raids on Monday. Spokesmen for the FBI and the New York Police Department declined to comment on any possible disputes over the timing of raids. Mr. Folsom said Mr. Zazi was in New York last week after driving from Colorado in a rented car. He said Mr. Zazi, a legal resident of the U.S. who moved to the country in 1999, was visiting because he needed to deal with a coffee-cart business he co-owns with a friend. He had lived in New York for about a decade before moving earlier this year to Colorado, where he has worked as an airport shuttle driver, Mr. Folsom said. During the visit to New York, Mr. Zazi had two encounters with law-enforcement officials preceding the searches of his friends' apartments, according to Mr. Folsom. Mr. Zazi was stopped in the rental car Sept. 10 while crossing the George Washington Bridge, Mr. Folsom said, adding that his client was told it was a random search for drugs. A police dog sniffed the car, but Mr. Zazi was quickly on his way. Another person familiar with the matter said nothing improper was found in the car during the stop. The nextJordan 2 shoes day, Sept. 11, Mr. Zazi discovered his rental car was missing after having been ordered towed by police. He told his lawyer that when he retrieved the car, it appeared the car and a laptop inside had been searched. On Saturday, Mr. Zazi returned to Colorado by airplane and on Tuesday retained Mr. Folsom, the lawyer said, following news of the Queens' home searches and reports that at least one of his friends had been questioned specifically about the Colorado man. Mr. Folsom said his client visits Pakistan regularly, because his wife, an Afghan national, lives there. Mr. Zazi has been steadily employed as an airport shuttle driver since arriving in Denver, according to representatives of the companies where he worked. Mr. Folsom described his client as "overwhelmed and kind of stressed out right now." But he said Mr. Zazi hoped theNike Revaderchi attention wouldn't cloud his future; he will soon be eligible for U.S. citizenship and wants to bring his wife to the U.S. "He's just eager to get this wrapped up," Mr. Folsom said.
