Outlook no brighter for Obama's new health plan

WASHINGTON -Starting over on health care, President Barack Obama knows his chances aren't looking much more promising. A year after he called for a far-reaching overhaul, Obama unveiled his most detailed plan nfl jerseysyet on Monday. Realistically, he's just hoping to win a big enough slice to silence the talk of a failing presidency. The 10-year, $1 trillion plan, like the current Democratic version in the Senate, would bring health insurance to more than 31 million Americans who now lack it. Government insurance wouldn't be included, a problem for Democratic progressives. Republicans are skeptical about where the money would come from — and about Obama's claim that the plan wouldn't raise the federal deficit. Striking out in one fresh direction that should have wide appeal, Obama would give federal regulators new powers over the insurance industry, a reaction to a rash of double- digit premium hikes that have infuriated policy holders in California and other states. The plan is supposed to be the starting point for Obama's televised, bipartisan health care summit Thursday — a new beginning after a year of wrangling and letting Congress take the lead. Yet Republicans were quick to nhl jerseysdismiss it as a meld of two Democratic bills the public doesn't want. Democrats, while reaffirming their commitment to major changes, reacted cautiously, mindful that Obama is asking them to stake their political fortunes in the fall elections. In the end, Americans who have listened to a year of talk about big changes in their health care, may see much smaller changes, if any. The president is likely to have to settle for much less than he wants — small-bore legislation that would smooth the rough edges of today's system but stop well short of coverage for nearly everyone. Still, any kind of win on health care would be good for Obama right now. For a president, victory often begets victory, defeat spawns defeat. A modest achievement would allow Obama to move on to other pressing issues, claiming credit for getting something done despite the harshest partisan environment in years. White House spokesman Dan Pfeiffer called soccer jerseythe proposal "an opening bid" for Thursday's summit. "One thing I want to be very clear about is that the president expects and believes the American people deserve an up-or-down vote on health reform," he said. But privately, a senior White House official sought to lower expectations, saying a solid single is better than striking out swinging for the fences. He spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the issue. Liberal Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., one of the rank-and-file lawmakers who would have to close ranks to pass Obama's proposal, questioned what's left in it for him after the president decided to dump a government insurance option sought by progressives. "For many of us, the House bill represented a series of difficult compromises, and if the president is going to ask us to compromise further to go toward the Senate, I have to ask who's vote we're getting," Weiner said. That means the plan is unlikely to pass without an all-out effort by Obama to muster votes from anxious Democrats. "I think all of us are going to have to sell this," said Rep. James Clyburn, D-S.C., the third-ranking Nba JerseysDemocrat in the House. "The devil is in the details." If Obama ultimately settles for a pared-down plan, the final bill could look a lot like what Republicans have been calling for over many years. It would include federal funding for high-risk pools that would extend coverage to people denied because of medical problems, a new insurance marketplace for small employers and individuals buying their own policies, as well as tax credits for small businesses. White House senior adviser David Axelrod said the president had no intention of scaling back his vision — unless forced. "His goal is to make as much of a good-faith effort as we can possibly muster" for a broad remake, Axelrod said. When Obama began his health care overhaul effort a year ago, he sought to avoid the problems former President Bill Clinton encountered when he issued Congress a detailed prescription in the 1990s, a plan that Mlb Jerseysfailed and contributed to the Democrats' loss of Congress in 1994. Now Obama is being criticized for having been too deferential to lawmakers. Weeks ago, the president and congressional Democrats seemed on the verge of a historic step — a long-sought remake of the nation's health care system after a half-century of unsuccessful attempts by scores of politicians. Then Republican Scott Brown stunned Washington with an upset win in the Massachusetts Senate race, denying Democrats their 60- seat majority and reversing any political momentum. In the new political order, Obama's plan builds on the legislation passed by Senate Democrats on Christmas Eve, while making several changes designed to make it more acceptable to House Democrats. It would dramatically roll back a Senate tax on high-cost health insurance plans objected to by the House — and by labor unions. Instead of raising $150 billion over 10 years, the tax would bring in just $30 billion, the administration said. To plug the revenue gap, Obama would raise Medicare payroll taxes on upper-income earners. For the first time, Medicare taxes would be assessed on nfl jerseysinvestment income, not just wages. In other concessions to the House, the president's proposal would gradually close the coverage gap in Medicare prescription benefits, eliminate a universally scorned Medicaid deal for Nebraska and improve federal subsidies to help many middle-class households afford their insurance premiums under a revamped system. But many basic questions remained unanswered. For all its fresh detail, the proposal is only 11 pages long. No neutral third party has vouched for the total cost of the bill, or the administration's claim that it would reduce the federal deficit. Also unclear is the extent and impact of new coverage requirements for individuals and businesses. Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf said Obama's plan was not detailed enough to provide a cost estimate, and even with additional information it could not be ready by Thursday. The plan would be paid for with a mix of Medicare cuts, tax increases and fees on drug companies and other health industry firms. With hardly a Democratic vote to sparenhl jerseys in Congress, abortion coverage remains a potentially insurmountable political problem. Obama would retain Senate-passed restrictions on federal funding that have been simultaneously decried as a sham by abortion opponents and denounced as draconian by abortion rights supporters. Like the House and Senate bills, the plan would require most Americans to carry health insurance coverage, with federal subsidies to help many afford the premiums. Insurance companies would be barred from denying coverage to people with medical problems or charging them more. The biggest potential beneficiaries of the plan would be small businesses and people buying their own coverage, who now face the highest, most unpredictable rates. Obama would create competitive insurance markets, closely regulated by federal and state officials. The markets would be state-based, as the Senate called for, not national as the House had wanted. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she looked forward to reviewing the plan and discussing it at the summit. "We must pass comprehensive, affordable health insurance reform, and I am hopeful that Thursday's jerseysmeeting will help us achieve this goal," she said. But House Republican Leader John Boehner of Ohio dismissed the proposal, saying, "the president has crippled the credibility of this week's summit by proposing the same massive government takeover of health care based on a partisan bill the American people have already rejected." Both will be at Thursday's summit, to be held at Blair House, the historic presidential guest quarters across from the White House. — Associated Press Writer Jennifer Loven contributed to this report. — On the Net:

Should Roman Polanski be above the law?

Jean Genet, the poet, novelist and playwright considered one of France's greatest 20th-century literary talents, was given up for adoption by his mother, a young prostitute, when he was one. Brilliant at school, he spent his childhood thieving and running away from home. Half his adolescence was spent in a young offenders' institution. He was dishonourably discharged from the army on a charge of indecency, roamed Europe as a vagrant, thief and homosexual prostitute, then spent a lengthy period in and out of jail in Paris following a dozen or so arrests for larceny, the use of false papers, vagabondage and lewd behaviour. By the time it was eventually published, his work, a subversive celebration of homosexuality, dishonesty and theft, was banned in America. Long before that, however, theAir Max Plus poet, novelist, dramatist and designer Jean Cocteau had stood up at one of Genet's many trials and unhesitatingly declared the as yet barely published author – threatened by that stage with a life sentence as a repeat offender – as "the greatest writer of the modern era". Genet stole, Cocteau added, "to nourish his soul and his body". Six years later, in the wake of a petition launched by Cocteau, Jean-Paul Sartre and Pablo Picasso, the French president, Vincent Auriol, granted Genet – by now the author of five novels, three plays and numerous poems – a full and irrevocable pardon; he would never again be sent to prison. The parallels with an Oscar-winning film-maker regarded as one of the most gifted cineastes of his generation, who was born in Paris of Polish refugee parents but spent his childhood in theNike jordan 9 Krakow ghetto, lost his mother in Auschwitz and his pregnant wife, Sharon Tate, to a famously brutal murder, and was later accused of child molestation, unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, rape by use of drugs, oral copulation and sodomy are, of course, far from perfect. But they may go some way to explaining the French reaction to the arrest of Roman Polanski last weekend in Switzerland, on an outstanding 2005 international arrest warrant. While other politicians decline to comment, the French culture minister, Frédéric Mitterrand, says he is "dumbfounded" by Polanski's "absolutely dreadful" detention, declaring forcibly that it made "no sense" for the director to be "thrown to the lions for an ancient story, imprisoned while travelling to an event that was intending to honour him: caught, in short, in a trap". The film-maker, Mitterrand continued, has "had a difficult life" but has "always said how much he loves France, and he is a wonderful man". There is, he added for good measure, "a generous America that we love, and a certain America that frightens us. It's that America that has just shown its face." Meanwhile, a large group of French actors and cinematographers including Fanny Ardant, Pierre Jolivet, Jean-Jacques Beineix and Bertrand Tavernier have signed an angry petition calling for Polanski's "immediate liberation", considering it "inadmissible" that "an international cultural event paying homage to one of the greatest of contemporary cineastes" should be turned into "a police trap". Polanski, said their petition – organised by Thierry Frémaux, director of the Cannes film festival – is "a French citizen, an artist of international renown, and is now threatened with extradition. That extradition . . . would deprive him of his liberty. We demand that he be freed immediately." France, acknowledges Edouard Waintrop, a veteran French critic who now programmes theJordan 9 shoes Fribourg film festival, certainly has a longstanding tradition, dating back to the 19th century, of treating artists differently. "There's the notion of art for art's sake," he says, "a certain leeway that's always allowed to the creative artist. In the 19th century it was elevated into an ideology. It's true we have a rather different vision of artistic licence – and, come to that, of licence in love." Agnès Poirier, a London-based French film critic and writer, agrees that "we are prepared to forgive artists a lot more than we are prepared to forgive ordinary mortals". Cocteau's celebrated 1943 testimony at the trial of Genet and the writer's subsequent presidential pardon, Poirier says, are a perfect demonstration of the notion that "in France, creative genius can usually get away with a great deal". But in a country that has known its own share of child sexual abuse scandals, and been rocked rigid by the horrors of the Dutroux case in neighbouring Belgium, French commentators are well aware that leaping to the defence of a man who in 1977 pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a 13-year-old girl may not be universally appreciated or understood. Indeed, commenters on many of the French newspaper websites yesterday appeared more or less evenly divided between those who felt Polanski was being unjustly hounded for an unfortunate and long-forgotten mistake, and those outraged by any assumption that the film-maker merited special treatment. This withering comment by "Acouphène" on Le Monde's website is typical of many: "You have to understand them, these poor stars. What's the point of being a celebrity if you can't have the women you want, whether they're above the age of consent or not, whether they're willing or not; if you can't flee abroad and prosper there while our country's justice system looks after you, circulate freely wherever you want to go to be awarded medals and charms at international festivals, and then mobilise opinion in your favour when things start to get tricky?" (Polanski's French citizenship protects him from extradition.) "PatrickO" wonders: "what would have happened if Mohamed, a factory worker from a working-class, immigrant-heavy suburb, had been accused of the same crime?" Waintrop reckons that in theAir jordan VIII face of any accusation of paedophilia, child abuse or sex with a minor, "the reaction of the average French person will be pretty much the same as the reaction of the average American – everyone finds that appalling." But many more French people, he reckons, will be moved to object to Polanski's arrest simply because of the way it was handled. "It's shocking, extremely shocking, that it was done like this, at a festival that was out to honour him; bizarre that Switzerland, a country where he has a house and spends time each year, should suddenly decide to be the only European country that's prepared to take this step, while so many others have allowed Polanski to travel freely," he says. "Why? It's all very strange." France's famed anti-Americanism has little to do with the official French reaction, insists Frémaux. "I think the fact that so many foreign artistes have signed the petition – Wim Wenders, Almodóvar, Kusturica, Michael Mann – shows there is international disapproval of what's happened," he says. "And it's perfectly normal for our culture minister to defend Polanski. His job, his passion, is to be at the side of our artists, whether in moments of triumph or difficulty. No, we're not denouncing America here – the American justice system must take its course, no one disputes that. No one is saying Roman is above the law, no one's saying that because he's rich and famous and a brilliant cineaste he shouldn't face justice. We're denouncing the form – the fact that he was arrested on his way to an international festival." What has inspired many French people's objections, agrees Poirier, is not anti-Americanism but "anti-prudishness, anti self-righteousness. There's a kind of feeling in France that America is acting essentially out of revenge against a very great talent, a man who basically never abided by America's rules – even when he was theClassic Short Ugg Boots most celebrated director in Hollywood." The more so, Poirier adds, because a documentary, Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, by the investigative film-maker Marina Zenovich was widely seen in France last year. The film argued convincingly that Polanski never denied the charges against him and that they were dismissed under the terms of a plea bargain: if he pleaded guilty to unlawful sex with a minor and agreed to be confined for psychiatric examination (which he was, for 42 days), the American authorities' requirement for punishment would be satisfied. Judge Laurence Rittenband, however, was apparently prepared to tear up the deal, possibly because he was worried about public reaction to a lenient verdict. Polanski therefore fled – as, his victim Samantha Geimer's lawyer implied strongly to Zenovich, anyone in their right mind would have done under those circumstances. "It's obviously not a straightforward case, says Frémaux. "To look again at this now you'd almost need to put the Air Max1970s on trial. Roman has always been extremely reticent about the whole episode. He never talks about it. But it's clear that the judge told him to plead guilty and do some time, and then he'd be OK. That's just one reason why this seems wrong." The fact that the man concerned carries a French passport and was responsible for Cul-de-Sac, Rosemary's Baby, Chinatown, The Tenant, Tess and The Pianist might also have something to do with it

The 20-acre site that's home jordan shoes to Alice Acres Farm Market & Greenhouses has been passed from generation to generation ever since the British established the site as a farm for colonial settlers. In more than 350 years, it has never been sold. But by Halloween, that might change. Fifty days of rain this summer cut Pete Bargmann's crop in half, and the dismal sales made it harder to make mortgage payments on the Gales Ferry farm, his house, and the ice cream shop he opened in 2008 to diversify his income. ”You know that movie 'The Perfect Storm'? It's the only way I can relate to it, “ said Bargmann, 49, who opened the farm stand in 1995 on land his stepfather had farmed before him. He had spent the previous two years restoring the farm. Every summer before this year, Bargmann had been able to put away about $100,000, enough for him to get by during the winter months and to restart his greenhouses in February. This season started out with promise in February as Bargmann and his staff filled 5,000 pots with soil and then planted about 100 different kinds of perennials in them. But today, Bargmann says, heWholesale cigarettes has $96 in his checking account and $47 in savings. He lives paycheck to paycheck, barely making his monthly mortgage and utility payments. And because his income from selling vegetables, plants and flowers was so low this summer, Bargmann fell behind on mortgage payments and could not get another loan. ”I don't have a penny,” he said. “Whatever money I'll have today is what I'm going to make today.” Save for a miracle, Bargmann said, he will have to close up his farm, rent out his house, and move west, resuming his past life as a commercial fisherman in Alaska. ”If nothing changes, I'm going to have to take all my stuff and put it in storage,” he said. “And so I don't lose my house, I'll have to rent it out. I guess I'll just get in my truck and head west to go fishing.” Bargmann is a beloved figure in Gales Ferry, and residents say they don't want to see the farm go. ”You don't meet many people Jordan basketball shoeslike him in a lifetime,” said Jo Wood, who works in Gales Ferry. “He's like the Pied Piper of Gales Ferry. Everybody's so drawn to him. He's a charismatic guy, and you can't help but like him.” Neighbors hope to find a way to help keep Alice Acres in business. ”We're hoping we could maybe do something, if enough people could get together,” said Linda Davis, a real estate agent from Gales Ferry who serves on the Town Council. “We could do some fundraising, or find some people to contribute. We certainly don't want to lose Pete or the farm.” Alice Acres will close for the season on Halloween, and Bargmann fears that day could be the end of the farm. ”I don't want to leave,” he said. “I've lived here my whole life and now it's come down to this, and God, I hate it. It's ripping me apart.” But if Bargmann doesjordan shoes 1 not get the miracle he's hoping for, he takes comfort knowing he had lived his dream. ”For the last 16 years, since I started doing this business, I've been blessed to do exactly what I was meant to do, ” Bargmann said. “So if I were to lose this tomorrow, at least for me I got to do what I was meant to do. And that's pretty big. Some guys go to work every day, and they'll never have this feeling.” cheap cigarettes cigarettes 555 cigarettes prada shoes ugg boots prada leather

Court overturns federal limits on independent campaign spending

A federal appeals court overturnedjordan basketball shoes VIII hard-fought campaign finance reform regulations in a ruling on Friday that will make it easier for independent political groups to raise and spend money to influence elections. The three-judge panel struck down regulations that were intended to blunt the power of such organizations, including the controversial Swift Boat Veterans for Truth and MoveOn.org, which drew heavy criticism for spending tens of millions of dollars on aggressive advertisements during the 2004 presidential campaign. The ruling could provide a boost to Republicans and their allies as they try to win back Congress in 2010 and the White House in 2012. Outside conservative groups could become particularly important in countering the fundraising juggernaut of President Obama, who shattered past records by raising more than $750 million during his 2008 campaign. Experts suggested that the court's decision could provide a boon to those groups tapping into the fervor of anti-Obama activity and "Tea Party" events this year. It will certainly allow groups across the political spectrum to raise and spend money without pause, potentially leading to a more acerbic campaign environment. The groups "are now free to accept jordan shoes 6 unlimited contributions, to spend unlimited funds independently supporting or opposing federal candidates," said Richard Hasen, a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles and an expert in election law. "One of the things we know about outside groups, as opposed to political parties, is that they run more negative ads ... This could lead to a more negative campaign season." The decision by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit came in a lawsuit brought by Emily's List, a nonprofit political organization that backs female Democratic candidates who support abortion rights. The group challenged several FEC regulations, arguing that the rules violated its First Amendment rights by limiting its ability to spend and raise money to influence elections. Circuit judges Brett Kavanaugh and Karen LeCraft Henderson agreed that the regulations violated free speech rights. A third judge, Janice Rogers Brown, said the regulations were invalid for other reasons. "The First Amendment, as the Court has construed it, safeguards the right of citizens to band together and pool their resources ... to express their views about policy issues and candidates for public office," wrote Circuit Judge Brett Kavanaugh in his 44-page opinion. A spokeswoman for the FEC, Judith Ingram, said officials were reviewing the opinion. The challenge by Emily's List is Dunhill Cigarettesjust one of several assaults on campaign finance laws and regulations in the courts. Last week, in a case with high stakes for campaign finance advocates, the Supreme Court heard arguments in an appeal that seeks to strip decades of restrictions on corporate support of political candidates. "We in the reform community are seeking attacks on all fronts of campaign finance laws," said Tara Malloy, associate counsel at the Campaign Legal Center, a nonprofit group that supports campaign finance reform. jordan basketball shoes IX jordan basketball shoes X jordan basketball shoes XI prada shoes ugg boots prada leather

Japan’s New Prime Minister Takes Office, Ending an Era

TOKYO — Yukio Hatoyama, who led his party to a landmark victory in elections last month, took office as prime minister and named a cabinet of loyal allies on Wednesday, promising to bring change to a country mired in stagnation after a half-century of virtually uninterrupted, one-party rule. Mr. Hatoyama has said the Democratic Party will reverse Japan’s long economic malaise, increasing social benefits and aligning policies more closely with the public’s needs rather than those of big business or the country’s bureaucrats. He has also spoken of redefining Japan’s relationship with the United States, its closest ally. “I am trembling with deep emotion over this moment of historical change, while at theWildwood Free Trail 90 same time I know I have taken on an immense responsibility,” Mr. Hatoyama said at a news conference. “We are entering the realm of the unknown.” Mr. Hatoyama, 62, is a management professor with a doctorate in engineering from Stanford; a critic of globalization; a political scion who cast out Japan’s postwar political order with a decisive victory over the long-ruling Liberal Democratic Party. He inherits an economy that is emerging from its deepest recession in decades, brought on by a collapse in the country’s mainstay exports amid the global economic crisis. He must also deal with debt approaching twice the size of its gross domestic product, a legacy of years of government spending on public works projects that fueled the politics of the departing Liberal Democrats. Unemployment is at a record high of 5.7 percent, while the cost of supporting a rapidly aging population is threatening the country’s public finances. Blaming years of mismanagement by bureaucrats for Japan’s woes, Mr. Hatoyama has made reining in their power a major goal. His rhetoric struck a chord with voters demoralized after decades of insider-driven politics and wasteful spending. The Democrats also promise to redistribute more funds directly to the Nike jordan 4 country’s struggling households, and build a stronger social safety net. They hope that more economic security will spur consumer spending, and wean Japan off its dependence on exports for economic growth. “First and foremost, we will engage in policies that will boost household incomes,” Mr. Hatoyama said. “We will realize a world where politics does not rely on bureaucrats.” The cabinet Mr. Hatoyama picked reflects those goals. Hirohisa Fujii, Japan’s new finance minister, is a Finance Ministry bureaucrat-turned-politician likely to play an important role in efforts to control the bureaucracy and rein in spending. He served as finance minister for a coalition government in the mid-1990s, when the Liberal Democrats briefly lost power. Mr. Fujii will be joined in his task by the Air jordan IIIdeputy prime minister, Naoto Kan, 62, a founder of the Democratic Party who will lead a new agency called the National Strategy Bureau. Mr. Kan will take on tasks once carried out by the bureaucracy, including drawing up national budgets and filling top bureaucratic posts. Mr. Kan, a former activist, lawyer and lawmaker, has a record of battling bureaucrats, most famously over a government cover-up of tainted blood products that caused hundreds of hemophilia patients to contract the AIDS virus. Critics say the Democrats, who swept into office with 308 out of 490 Parliament seats, lack a coherent growth strategy. “The Democratic Party is still trying to figure out how best it should engage with the global economy,” said Izuru Makihara, a politics professor at Tohoku University. “They say they will overhaul current policy, but it’s not clear what they will replace it with.” In his cabinet lineup, Mr. Hatoyama also accommodated the Democrats’ two coalition partners — the Social Democratic Party and the People’s New Party, a conservative splinter group. Those parties, with anti-free-market platforms, are expected to push the Democrats to reverse many of the pro-market reforms championed by the former prime minister, Junichiro Koizumi. The Democrats’ election platform also called for a re-examination of Tokyo’s ties with Washington, including theJordan 3 shoes presence of 50,000 American service members in Japan. But Mr. Hatoyama’s choice of foreign minister, the 56-year-old moderate Katsuya Okada, signals that Japan’s pro-American foreign policy will not drastically change.

He doesn't make the cars of the future; he makes the cars of the future go. As chief executive of AC Propulsion Inc., Tom Gage advances the technologies under the hoods of electric transportation. The high-tech batteries and drive systems made by the San Dimas company power a growing number of electric vehicles. Those include a test fleet of BMW's electric Minis, which are currently whooshing -- silently -- over roads in California, New York and New Jersey. From the pits to this: A self-described "car nut" since childhood, Gage moved to Georgia to work as a race mechanic after graduating from Stanford University with an engineering degree. After a few years tinkering with turbos and emissions systems, he wiped off the grease, got an MBA and landed a job at Chrysler. There he got his first jolt of electric transportation, working on a program to develop plug-in passenger vehicles. That effort sputtered, and Gage ultimately left Detroit for California to consult on advanced vehicle technologies. In 1994, he met Alan Cocconi, who had put Jordan basketball shoes 10.5
an electric drivetrain into an old Honda Civic. Driving it, Gage said, "was a life-changing experience for me." Soon after, he "started hanging out at AC Propulsion," Cocconi's company, and worked his way up the ladder. Big break: For a while, AC Propulsion cobbled together its own vehicle line, dubbed the eBox, by converting Toyota's Scion xB hatchbacks into electric cars with a 120-mile range for $55,000 (plus the cost of the Scion). The first customer was actor Tom Hanks, Gage said. AC Propulsion also helped Tesla Motors of San Carlos, Calif., develop its $109,000 electric Roadster. But the real breakthrough came last year when BMW picked Gage's company to supply the drivetrain and battery for its Mini E electric program, an order for some 600 cars. "When that came along, we totally dropped eBox," Gage said. "We had our hands full." Not too fast, but furious: With a staff of just 35 employees in theNike air jordan 10.5
U.S. and 50 in the Shanghai factory it opened in 2006, AC Propulsion isn't a high-volume shop. Each month it manufactures just 40 drive systems, which sell for roughly $25,000 apiece. Still, Gage says the privately held company is making money, a rarity in the world of electric cars. "We're very profitable, and that distinguishes us from just about everybody in the business," Gage said. The future is current: Gasoline engines can be great for power or for fuel economy, but not both, Gage said. That's a compromise thatair jordan 6 ring
electric cars don't have to make. He said vehicles running AC Propulsion's drivetrain, called the tzero, can have bullet-like acceleration yet still get from point A to point B for just a few pennies' worth of juice. The only limitation is range, which is rapidly increasing as lithium battery technology improves. "The most compelling feature is that you don't use petroleum," Gage said. "For many uses, electrics are superior." Why Detroit will win: Start-ups like AC Propulsion are leading theJordan basketball shoes 2009
development of electric vehicles. Still, Gage isn't counting out old-line automakers. Blame the eight years spent at Chrysler. "When you see the precision and scale of a huge auto factory, you realize just how hard and expensive it is to mass-produce cars," Gage said. He believes that giants like Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp. will ultimately buy up promising companies in the car space. "Making parts for 10,000 or 100,000 cars is too much for us," Gage said. "Our goal is to be a participant in the early part of the process and then plan a timely exit." TheNike air jordan 2009
more things change: In some ways Gage, who is 59 and has two kids, has come full circle. One of his first jobs was running a business that removed the emission-control devices from sports cars so that they would go faster. Three decades later, he's running a company that removes emissions from cars altogether. "It's always been about modifying cars to make them things that people want to drive," he said. What's he driving? Gage generally scoots about in an eBox or a Mini E but admits to owning a Toyota and a pair of Volkswagens. And because his Sunnyvale home is 375 miles from work, he logs quite a few miles on airplanes, which he knows aren't exactly carbon neutral. "It just rubs me the air jordan 10.5
wrong way to start up a gas engine," Gage said.

  Lockerbie overshadows Libyan coup anniversary

TRIPOLI, Libya – Libya staged a lavish spectacle Tuesday, parading white-robed horsemen and gold-turbaned dancers as jets streaked overhead to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the coup that brought Moammar Gadhafi to power in the oil-rich nation. The four-day festivities were designed to highlight the volatile leader's acceptance on the world stage, but were overshadowed by new controversies about the return of the only man convicted of the Lockerbie bombing. While African leaders held a summit to coincide with the celebrations, most Western leaders stayed away. Nike Men Air Force 1 High The Libyan leader, known for his outlandish outfits and penchant for conducting state business in tents, kicked off the celebrations before dawn Tuesday, timed to coincide with the start of the coup, with a feast at a former U.S. air base that was later turned into a Libyan military camp. Addressing the audience, Gadhafi said that as a young Libyan lieutenant he'd been barred from entering the base by an American soldier. "I told the soldier: 'You'll see what the future has in store,'" said Gadhafi. "I don't think the American soldier quite measured the scope of my words." The return home of Abdel Baset al-Megrahi, the only man convicted of the 1988 Lockerbie bombing that killed 270 people, overshadowed the celebrations. Scottish officials released him Aug. 20 on compassionate grounds because doctors said he was suffering from terminal prostate cancer and had only three months to live. But his release and warm homecoming in Libya outraged many of the victims' families and U.S. officials. Vince Carter Libya's decision to include a video clip during the anniversary celebration show of al-Megrahi stepping off the plane from Scotland to roaring cheers could stoke even more anger. The segment, which lasted only a few seconds, came at the end of a video presentation chronicling Gadhafi's accomplishments since the 1969 coup. Intense public pressure over al-Megrahi's release has sent the British and Scottish governments scrambling to respond. On Tuesday, both governments made public their correspondence on his release showing some British officials advised Scotland's government that there were no legal obstacles to returning al-Megrahi to Libya. Other documents showed British Justice Secretary Jack Straw initially believed al-Megrahi should be excluded from a prisoner transfer agreement signed between the U.K. and Libya, but later changed his mind — saying he did not wish to damage the "beneficial relationship" between the two countries. nike yeezy "Developing a strong relationship with Libya, and helping it to reintegrate into the international community, is good for the U.K.," Straw said in that letter to Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond. "Libya is one of only two countries to have ever voluntarily and transparently dismantled its weapons of mass destruction program. Having sponsored terrorist attacks in the past, it is now an important partner in the fight against terrorism." The man at the center of the spiraling debate has been hospitalized in Tripoli this week, and Libyan officials said Tuesday his health was quickly deteriorating since his return home. Asked how long al-Megrahi still has to live, the head of Libyan State Information Agency, Majid al-Dursi, said: "Only God knows ... but he is dying now." The Lockerbie controversy was not the only one dogging the celebrations. In a sign of how tightly the government was trying to control the festivities, Italy said Libya wanted an Italian air force acrobatic team flying over Tripoli to only emit green smoke — a color Gadhafi associates with his regime. William Anthony Parker4 Italy threatened to ground the planes, and, in a victory for the former colonial ruler, when the jets did fly Tuesday night, they emitted their traditional red, white and green colors of the Italian flag. Rome has maintained generally good relations with Gadhafi, and Libya is a major supplier of gas and oil to Italy, Libya's former colonial ruler. Italian Premier Silvia Berlusconi met with Gadhafi in Libya on Sunday to mark the one-year anniversary of a friendship treaty with Tripoli. Gadhafi, 67, has courted many controversies during his rule. He toppled Libya's king in a largely bloodless coup on Sept. 1, 1969, and has been at the helm of the North African country ever since, sometimes referred to as "The Guide," or more frequently "Brother Leader." His rule has been erratic, blending a local form of socialism with Islam in a largely government-less state where masses are meant to rule through local assemblies. In practice, this has meant an autocratic regime. Nike Air Force 1 Mid The son of modest desert Bedouins, Gadhafi was a 27-year-old army captain when he led a group of young officers to power. After the coup, Gadhafi nationalized most of the American and other Western assets in Libya, fast souring relations with much of the outside world. During the following decades, he promoted a hard-line form of pan-Arabism, recruiting militias, funding rebellions and sending his army to fight across much of northern Africa. He was accused of harboring several prominent terrorists and hosted militant training camps, while sponsoring other attacks himself. These included a 1986 bomb blast at a Berlin discotheque frequented by U.S. troops that led to U.S. retaliatory airstrikes that Libyan officials said killed 41 people, including Gadhafi's adopted baby daughter. A video presentation aired during the anniversary celebration showed ex-President Ronald Reagan announcing the attacks in a segment titled "The Failed Aggression Against Libya." A defiant Gadhafi was shown at the time saying "the attacks will not faze us." There were also erratic moments during his rule, including a shouting match at an Arab League summit where he insulted the king of Saudi Arabia live on television. More recently, the Libyan leader has tried to restore his country's standing in the world and transform it from a pariah state to an accepted member of the international community. Nike Air Force 25 Supreme Gadhafi surprised the international community by agreeing to dismantle his country's weapons of mass destruction programs. The United States restored ties with Libya in 2006 after Libya agreed to resolve the Lockerbie case in a deal that included paying compensation to the victims' families. Libya is now one of the world's largest oil producers and a key European supplier of natural gas. Gadhafi will make his first visit to the U.S. later this month to address the United Nations in what was expected to be the culmination of years of effort to repair his international image. air yeezy George Joffe, a Libya expert at the Center of International Studies at Britain's Cambridge University, said while there has been outrage over al-Megrahi's release and homecoming, the West is clearly holding back its criticism of Gadhafi because they are interested in the country's oil. Joffe said he doubted the controversy will have any real long-term repercussions. "My guess is within a matter of weeks the matter will have been allowed to blow over," he said.

Pakistan, US check reports of Taliban chief death

Pakistan, US check reports of Taliban chief death ISLAMABAD – U.S. and Pakistani authorities are investigating reports that Pakistani Taliban chief Baitullah Mehsud was killed in an American missile strike, officials from both countries said Friday. If confirmed, Mehsud's demise would be a major boost to Pakistani and U.S. efforts to eradicate the wholesale nfl jerseysTaliban and al-Qaida. Mehsud is believed responsible for dozens of suicide attacks, beheadings and target killings in Pakistan. He is allied with al-Qaida and has been suspected in the killing of former Pakistani Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. Pakistan views him as its top internal threat and has been preparing an offensive against him. The U.S. sees him as a danger to the war effort in Afghanistan, largely because of the threat he is believed to pose to nuclear-armed Pakistan. The missile strike hit the home of Mehsud's father-in-law in Pakistan's South Waziristan tribal region early Wednesday. Intelligence officials say Mehsud's second wife was among at least two people killed, and Mehsud associates have claimed he was not among the dead. Pakistan army spokesman Maj. Gen. Athar Abbas cautioned thatcheap nfl jerseys the reports of Mehsud's death are still unconfirmed. "We are receiving reports and probing," he said. The U.S. government is also looking into the reports, according to a U.S. counterterrorism official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the investigation publicly. The counterterrorism official indicated that the United States did not yet have physical evidence — remains — that would prove who died. But he said there are other ways of determining who was killed in the strike. He declined to describe them. For years, the U.S. has considered Mehsud a lesser threat to NFL Jerseys its interests than some of the other Pakistani Taliban, their Afghan counterparts and al-Qaida, because most of his attacks were focused inside Pakistan, not against U.S. and NATO troops in Afghanistan. That view appeared to change in recent months as Mehsud's power grew and concerns mounted that increasing violence in Pakistan could destabilize the U.S. ally and threaten the entire region. In March, the State Department authorized a reward of up to $5 million for the militant chief. And increasingly, American missile strikes — falling by the dozens over the past year — focused on Mehsud-related targets. While Mehsud's death would be a big blow to the Taliban in Pakistan, he has deputies who could take his place. Whether a new leader could wreak as much havoc in Pakistan as Mehsud Nike air jordan 23 shoescould depends largely on how much pressure the Pakistani military continues to put on the Taliban network, especially in South Waziristan. Pakistan's record is spotty on that front. It has used both military action and truces to try to contain Mehsud over the years, but neither tactic seemed to work, despite billions in U.S. aid aimed at helping the Pakistanis tame the tribal areas. Mehsud was not that prominent a militant when the U.S. invaded Afghanistan in 2001 after the Sept. 11 attacks, according to Mahmood Shah, a former security chief for the tribal regions. In fact, Mehsud has struggled against such rivals as Abdullah Mehsud, an Afghan war veteran who had spent time in U.S. custody in Guantanamo Bay. A February 2005 peace deal with Mehsud appeared to give him room to consolidate and boost his troop strength tremendously, and within months dozens of pro-government tribal elders in the region were gunned down on his command. In December 2007, Mehsud became the head of a new coalition calledNike air jordan 22 shoes the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan, or Pakistan's Taliban movement. Under Mehsud's guidance, the group has killed hundreds of Pakistanis in suicide and other attacks. He is believed to have as many as 20,000 fighters at his beck and call, among them a steady supply of suicide bombers. Analysts say the reason for Mehsud's rise in the militant ranks is his alliances with al-Qaida and other violent extremist groups. U.S. intelligence has said al-Qaida has set up its operational headquarters in Mehsud's South Waziristan stronghold and the neighboring North Waziristan tribal area. Mehsud has no record of attacking targets abroad, although he has threatened to attack Washington. However, he is suspected of being behind a 10-man cell arrested in Barcelona in January 2008 for plotting suicide attacks in Spain. Pakistan's former government and the CIA have named him as the prime suspect behind the December 2007 killing of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto. He has denied a role. He also has withstood threats from within Taliban ranks. Nike air jordan 21 shoesA few weeks ago, Qari Zainuddin, the leader of a renegade Pakistani Taliban faction who had criticized Mehsud's tactics, was shot to death — allegedly on Mehsud's orders. In June of this year, Pakistan said it would launch an offensive against Mehsud in South Waziristan. In the weeks that have followed, the army has relied heavily on airstrikes to target areas under Mehsud's control, but it has never quite gone full-scale with the offensive. Meantime, the missile strikes continued, raising speculation that the U.S. might get him first. Pakistan publicly opposes the missile strikes, saying they angerNike air jordan 20 shoes local tribes and make it harder for the army to operate. Still, many analysts suspect the two countries have a secret deal allowing the strikes.

  REFILE-UPDATE 2-Sony plans $199 U.S. e-reader, takes on Amazon

REFILE-UPDATE 2-Sony plans $199 U.S. e-reader, takes on Amazon * New pocket-sized device to sell at $199 * Price of best-sellers, new releases to drop to $9.99 * Sony executive expects market to reach 2Denver Broncos Jerseys mln users (Eliminates extra word in paragraph three) (Adds details of launch, analysts' and executive's comments) By Laura Isensee LOS ANGELES , Aug 4 (Reuters) - Sony Corp (6758.T) will begin selling this month the cheapest digital book reader for the United States, heating up the competition with Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O) in the small but fast-growing market for electronic readers. Sony plans to start selling its 5-inch-screen Reader Pocket Edition at $199 -- which it called a breakthrough price -- and a larger touchscreen reader for $299, through nationwide Nike air jordan XXIretail outlets such as Wal-Mart (WMT.N) and Best Buy (BBY.N). To drive demand, the company plans to reduce the price it now charges for downloads of best-sellers and new releases to $9.99 from $11.99, bringing prices largely in line with Amazon's. Analysts say people that may have been holding off in the middle of a recession may be tempted by Sony to jump onto the digital-reader bandwagon. "Achieving the $199 price point, we believe, expands the market dramatically," Steve Haber, president of Sony's Digital Reading division, told Reuters in an interview. "You can throw it in your bag and always have it with LeBron Jamesyou, and that also allowed us to achieve a more affordable price point." The news is the latest salvo in a battle between digital readers where Sony -- which was first to market -- Amazon and other companies are vying to establish themselves in a market that they expect to become a profit driver. In July, online retailer Amazon cut the price of its standard Kindle electronic reader by 17 percent to $299. A larger version of the Kindle sells at $489. Haber expects the market for e-readers to exceed 2 million units this year in the United States. Forrester Research estimates Kindle and the Sony Reader to hit the one million mark in U.S. sales by the end of 2008 and forecast that the market would reach two million units in 2009. "We're on track to exceed that forecast in 2009," said Jordan XVIII shoesSarah Rotman Epps, a media analyst for Forrester Research. "One of the drivers for that (future growth) is the fact that Sony is getting a product out at $199." "We predicted that wouldn't happen until next year. They've managed to design an inexpensive device that doesn't feel cheap and that's going to have significant impact in the market." While digital readers are convenient for avid book readers on the go and those who travel frequently, their high prices have been a barrier to many. In recent research, Forrester found that 13 percent of U.S. online consumers thought $199 was an "affordable splurge": a price that was expensive but that they would consider. Of consumers planning to buy a digital reader in the next six months, 26 percent said $199 was within reach. Electronic readers allow consumers to read books,Nike air jordan 15 magazines or newspapers on a tablet-like device that downloads content digitally. Comparisons with Amazon's Kindle will be inevitable. Sony's more expensive new device, called the Reader Touch Edition, offers users a touch screen like its older PRS-700, but at $299 it is $50 cheaper. It also comes with a built-in dictionary that, with a tap on a word, pops up the word's definition. It also allows users to take notes with a virtual keyboard or attached stylus. But unlike the Kindle, none of Sony's devices old or new will have wireless connectivity, meaning users will have to download books first to their personal computers or Apple Mac computers -- which Sony now supports. Haber said Sony was looking into building wireless capability into future readers, but would not give details or a timeframe. Another major area of divergence is the closed system of Nike air jordan melo 1.5 shoessharing in the industry. In Amazon's case, titles bought through its Kindle Store can be read on the Kindle but also Apple Inc's (AAPL.O) iPhone or iPod Touch -- but not the Sony Reader. Barnes & Noble's titles, meanwhile, are accessible on Apple devices and Research in Motion Ltd's (RIM.TO) Blackberry, but not on the Kindle or Sony Reader. And titles from Sony's store can only be played on the company's own reader. Haber said he hopes the industry will move to a common format and common digital rights management, but stopped short of saying Sony will try to make its titles compatible withAir Max 360 other devices. "It's like physical books. You can buy physical books from any store that you want and use it in any room in your home you want," Haber said. (Editing by Edwin Chan; editing by Carol Bishopric)

Apple stuns even in slowest quarter SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- Apple Inc.'s blowout fiscal third quarter was especially impressive because it showed that even in the current economy, consumers are still buying its products, generally costlier than rival computer gear. On top of that, this quarter is typically one of the company'sjordan shoes slowest, as it is just ahead of the much busier back-to-school quarter, when Apple /quotes/comstock/15*!aapl/quotes/nls/aapl (AAPL 158.40, +6.89, +4.55%) tends to launch new products. See Apple earnings story here. The Cupertino, Calif. company reported stronger-than-expected revenue and better unit volumes for all its product lines. Wall Street had forecast sales of about 2.5 million Macs, and the company sold 2.6 million. The popular iPhone, which had a major software upgrade along with a new, pricier model this quarter, had sales of 5.2 million units. That was up from expectations of about 5 million. Theair jordan shoes iPod also exceeded predictions, with Apple selling 10.2 million iPods, versus forecasts of 10 million. Investors now seem to be taking the company's outlook with a grain of salt. Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said in a statement that he expects fiscal fourth quarter revenue in a range of $8.7 billion to $8.9 billion. That forecast was a bit lower than the current consensus on Wall Street of $9.11 billion, according to FactSet Research. Palin Leaves Voters, GOP Allies Perplexed (CBS) CBS News Correspondent Terry McCarthy reports that Sarah Palin's game of hide and seek with the media is frustrating some voters -- and even perplexing her allies in the Republican party. "I don't think it's right for her to just disappear on us like that," said Iesha Beverly-Weasel, an Anchorage resident. Today on CBS' "The Early Show", former aide to George W. Bush's former chief political aide Karl Rove said on "Fox News Sunday" that Palin's decision was personal, but it's a risky strategy. "She marches to the beat of her own drummer, and its going to be very interesting how she pulls this off," he said. Even the normally effusive Rush Limbaugh didn't know what to make of her. "I'm not going to sit here and tell you I know for sure what thisAir Jordan 10 means because I don't," he said, "'cause I haven't heard her say - I haven't heard anybody in her camp say - what this is all about and why she's doing it." Source: Pistons reach Avery Johnson's agent The surprising firing of Pistons coach Michael Curry today seems to prove the old adage that the NBA is a player’s league. Hired last summer to replace Flip Saunders, it was initiallyJordan XV shoes thought that Curry, just a few years removed from his NBA playing days, would have the ear of the players. Far from it. As the team tumbled to a 39-43 record and first-round sweep at the hands of the Cleveland Cavaliers, players privately questioned game plans as well as the many lineup changes Curry implemented. Rip Hamilton and Allen Iverson, both the subject of a midseason controversy over who would be in the starting lineup, both publicly questioned Curry's decision-making. At the end of the season, Pistons president of basketball operationsPall Mall Cigarettes Joe Dumars said that Curry’s status was a non-issue, but something obviously changed. So here’s today’s lesson on how professional sports operate. Coaches lead at the whim of their much higher-paid players. And unless a coach carries the weight of a lot of victories or, even better, championship rings, he must quickly establish himself as worthy of respect. One would have to figure that word spread around the league about players’ reservations over Curry. And what with Dumars hoping to attract at least two proven starters through free agency — which begins at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow — it appears that Joe is seeking a more established coach for the next Pistons’ era. Pistons guard Rodney Stuckey said the move caught him off-guard. HeAir Jordan 23 told the Free Press that he learned of the firing after he awoke this morning and read the e-mail. "To tell you the truth at the end of the day it’s a business,” Stuckey said. “He was a good guy and I learned a lot from him, but at the end of the day it’s a business." A list of possible candidates to replace Curry would have to include ESPN analysts and former Dallas Mavericks coach Avery Johnson and TNT analyst and former Pistons coach Doug Collins. Johnson's agent has been contacted by the Pistons but no formal talks have been scheduled, according to a person familiar with the situation. The person said Johnson "absolutely" would beKent cigarettes interested in the position. A Pistons source doubted that former Pistons great Bill Laimbeer, who recently resigned as coach of the WNBA's Shock, would be considered. "As we've continued through this transition, it's become clear that we need a more experienced coach for where we are right now," Dumars said today in an e-mail. "I asked a lot of Mike as a first-year head coach." Curry’s tenure was doomed after the loss of All-Star point guard Chauncey Billups, who was traded to Denver for Iverson last November. Dumars fired Saunders last year after he led the team to the Eastern Nike Dunk 1 Piece High & LowConference finals in each of his three seasons. Curry played eleven seasons in the NBA, including two stints with the Pistons (1996-97 and 1999-2003). He also played for the Philadelphia 76ers, Washington Bullets, Milwaukee Bucks, Toronto Raptors and Indiana Pacers. Prior to becoming a head coach, Curry was an assistant under SaundersNike air jordan 17 shoes in Detroit and served as the NBA's Vice President of Player Development. Calls to Michael Curry's cell phone were not returned. Dumars declined to answer additional questions.

KENNY PERRY: Unbelievable. I mean to say you want to win something and then to actually achieve it is a great feeling. I just hate it took me so long to do it. Steve would always get onto me. I stay with three families. I won in Phoenix, the FDR, Bill Scott, and the Eastlake in Muirfield. I won those two events. I never could win this win. To think all I gotta do is make two pars to win a tournament and I couldn't get it done. I really played heavy the way I played that Back 9 today. I hit a very poor right, totaled the driver, didn't go anywhere, and I couldn't go for that green in two, but I can't think of one miss-hit golf shot. I was right on the button. My swing was there and I was able to carry it to the house. That 7-iron I hit on 17 was one of the sweetest shots I've hit in a long time to give me birdie, give me a three-shot cushion, to make the 18th hole, where I didn't have to stress out. I knew pretty much anybody could probably play that hole and win the golf tournament. DOUG MILNE: Okay. We'll open it up for questions. Q. 8 and 9, birdie and getting up-and-down? KENNY PERRY: Eight was the sweetest 5-iron I've hit in a long time. Air Jordan 23That sucker never left the flag. Looked like it was going in, and it just kind of creeped off to the left and I had a 3-footer, tapped in. Then I hit a real good drive on 9. It looked like it was perfect, going right over the center of that bunker where I was aiming. And I guess the wind got it or whatever and kind of semi buried in the side of that hill. And when I hit it, it looked like a top-spin lobber. The ball just kind of -- it came out. I don't know. It was the weirdest shot I ever hit. Then I hit a nice little pitch up there to about eight, six feet. My putter was on today. I knew I was putting well. I rolled that one in to perfect speed. Slipped in the right side of the hole. That was a nice momentum-saver to keep the round going. Then the birdie on 11 right on top of it really got me going for that Back 9. Q. And then eight the shot? KENNY PERRY: 8 was 202. The pitch shot was about 38 yards. Q. 15, Paul made an eagle and you're looking at a birdie putt.Russian Style cigarettes How big was that? KENNY PERRY: Oh, it was huge. Huge. All of them were huge. But I knew I had to make that one again to keep pushing on. I knew David Toms had just birdied. So I knew I needed to make that putt, and I hit such a sweet putt. I played it outside right with perfect speed and just curled it right over the front of the cup right in the hole. So that told me a lot about myself to have the perfect speed on that putt. So that was a huge putt. Q. How much reflection you did. I was going to ask you when you made peace with Augusta, but it sounds like it might have been today. KENNY PERRY: No. I made peace about three days after that was over. I really did. I thought about it about a week after the tournament, but I really haven't reflected too much on it. It's time to move on. I dwelled too much on that '96 PGA loss. I learned a lot from that. And I was determined to get back in that Nike air jordan 15 shoeswinner's circle again. Q. You talked about the fans today. The first tee seemed like -- KENNY PERRY: Unbelievable. Yeah. That was the greatest roar. I got an unbelievable roar on Saturday. I fed off the energy of the crowd today. I had so many people pulling for me all over the golf course. To me that's never happened. That Augusta thing, even though I lost, I had won over a lot of fans. I definitely felt it from Colonial, Memorial, all the tournaments I've played since Augusta, a lot of people have, Ryder Cup has meant a lot to me, and done for me, so my fan base has grown a hundred fold since all that's happened. It's been unbelievable. Q. A little bit like (inaudible) out there? KENNY PERRY: Definitely. I definitely felt like a home course advantage, for sure. DOUG MILNE: If you wouldn't mind, Kenny, going over your birdies. KENNY PERRY: I hit 3-iron and sand wedge on two to six, eight feet. I hit driver and 3-iron. I hit the most unbelievable bunker shot of my life on six today. I was on the down slope on the Nike air jordan 18front of the bunker and had to carry the whole bunker to the pin to me and it came out perfect. It landed right in that two foot of heavy grass right over the lip and killed it and it jumped out about four feet and was able to get that in and that was unbelievable, and eight was prettiest 5-iron I've hit in a long time. Ten hit a great drive 6-iron in there about 20 feet. 11, hit a 9-iron, playing safe, hit it left, made another 20-footer. My putter was on. I knew if I got it on the green I had a shot at making birdie and 15 I drove it right in front of the green and pitched up eight feet short and was able to throw that one in and 17 I hit 7-iron six feet from the hole. Q. What did you hit off the tee? KENNY PERRY: 3-iron. I knew it was only like 220 to carry that bunker Jordan XX shoesthere and it was downhill. Even though it was into the wind I had plenty of club. I didn't want to be as aggressive as Paul was. He hit driver way down there. So I knew I was going to be short of that fairway bunker to left. And it was a perfect way for me to play that hole. I hit 3-iron, 8-iron every day and today I hit 7- iron. Q. You said earlier this week 20 wins unrealistic goal, is that kind of creeping into your mind a little now, it's not so unrealistic? KENNY PERRY: I'm making people think a little bit. Still, six more wins is a lot of wins. You know, I've won three last year, two this year already. Who knows? If I get hot again, get on a little Viceroy Cigarettesstreak, sneak in two more by the end of the year, might be very realistic. But as I said before, it was pretty unrealistic goal. I just kind of threw that number out there to see everybody roll their eyes in the back of their head. But it is a goal of mine. I may not ever reach it and if I don't, that's fine. My career's been unbelievable, the things I've been able to accomplish. But that keeps me working each day, keeps me going back to work. Q. All the wins you have, is this as good a win as you've ever had? KENNY PERRY: Definitely. Good win as I've ever had, the way I finished today, on Sunday, my golf was unbelievable. To shoot 22-under par, to break the all-time record of all the great Air Jordan 22 champions that are on this trophy, it's unbelievable. Q. What's the name of the family you stay with? KENNY PERRY: Steve and Martha Kirsch. I was a rookie, and was broke, needed a place to stay, and they were going to keep Jay Haas that week and Jay said no. So they said they'd take the rookie with no money, and I've never left. I've been a bum ever since. Q. You mentioned you won over some people after Augusta. Do you think that was on the course or after the course the way you handled yourself? KENNY PERRY: Well, I guess everybody loves energy. Everybody I hear talks about my energy afterwards, how I handled the loss and how I talked about it, and you know, there's a lot more importantRothmans cigarettes things in life. My mother's got multiple myeloma cancer. My sister's got breast cancer. There's a lot of sickness in my family. We're struggling. Sandy's mom's not doing very well. She's 80 years old. She's broke her back. She doesn't get around anymore. So you know, I'm just going to enjoy life right now. I'm going to try to help as many people as I can along the way, and I'm not going to worry too much about wins and losses and we're going to enjoy life a little bit.

South Carolina governor checks in after taking a hike Gov. Mark Sanford finally phoned home Tuesday morning. The South Carolina Republican had been absent without leave since Thursday, when he left town and went off the grid to "decompress" after a taxing state legislative session, aides said. The lieutenant governor, other lawmakers and even his wifeNike Women Dunk Low Mid & High said they did not know where he was, and by the time a spokesman disclosed his whereabouts late Monday night (he was reportedly hiking along the Appalachian Trail), media outlets around the country had already reported on the second-term governor's "disappearance." When Sanford checked in with his chief of staff Tuesday, he was shocked to hear that his absence had caused alarm, the spokesman said. "He's a big outdoors man; he likes to spend as much time outdoors as possible," Joel Sawyer said. "He was very taken aback by all the attention that the trip has gotten." For a politician whom some have touted as a likely 2012 presidential contender, the episode was an inelegant introduction to the American public. And it's another setback for Sanford, whoEpique cigarettes earlier this year was told by the South Carolina Supreme Court that the state had to accept $700 million in federal stimulus money despite his opposition to the spending. On Tuesday, after learning that Sanford was safe and sound, many pundits and politicians questioned his judgment, saying that he should have signed over executive privileges to the lieutenant governor before he left on his trip. "Our governor has been doing some really strange things lately, and people are just kind of concerned," said Keiana Page, a spokeswoman for the South Carolina Democratic Party. "His disappearance took us all by surprise. It was irresponsible." "I think it's bizarre behavior," said state Sen. John M. "Jake" Knotts Jr., a Republican. "The state was on autopilot without a pilot." But aides say that Sanford, who as a state representative once brought live pigs into the House chamber to protest "pork projects," was just being himself when he left Thursday. "No one has ever accused the governor of being conventional," Sawyer Kent Cigarettessaid. "After the legislative session, he typically likes to get out of Columbia for a few days to clear his head." Sawyer said he thinks the furor over Sanford's absence was fueled by two Republicans with political agendas: Knotts and Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer. "This thing's got politics written all over it," Sawyer said. The lieutenant governor, who Sawyer said has "never worked closely with the governor," released a stern statement Monday that said: "I cannot take lightly that his staff has not had communication with him for more than four days, and that no one, including his own family, knows his whereabouts." Knotts was the first person to provide on-the-record confirmation of Sanford's absence to local media, the State newspaper in Columbia reported. Knotts, a frequent critic of Sanford's who supported his opponent in the 2006 governor's race, said Tuesday that his decision to talk to the media was not politically motivated. "I was worried about the state of South Carolina. I was worried aboutAir 180 what would happen if a forest fire started, or a prison riot started, or something that needed the governor's executive-level decision," he said. "I was just making sure that we had someone at the helm." Not everyone in South Carolina is disappointed with the governor. Heather Sendler, who works at Hudson's Smokehouse in Columbia, said she empathized with Sanford, who she figured was probably exhausted after the legislative session. "I believe he just needed to get away and clear his head," she said.Nike Air Bound "I understand. Everybody needs a break."

What impact will Supreme Court decision on DNA evidence have?

What impact will Supreme Court decision on DNA evidence have? Washington - Lawyers with the Innocence Project expressed disappointment on Thursday after the US Supreme Court ruled that one of their clients did not enjoy a constitutional right to test biological evidence used to convict him years earlier. "Most of the people who need DNA testing to prove their Kobe Bryant innocence will not be affected by today's ruling, but the small number of people who are impacted may suffer greatly," said Peter Neufeld, co-director of the New York-based Innocence Project, which has helped reverse 240 convictions through DNA testing. Mr. Neufeld argued the case before the high court. In a 5 to 4 decision, the Supreme Court said state authorities in Alaska did not violate the constitutional rights of a convicted rapist when they refused to allow him to test the DNA evidence in his case years after his conviction. The majority justices said William Osborne had adequate means to pursue his post-conviction investigation via state procedures and court rulings in Alaska. Forty-seven states and the federal government have passed Epique Cigaretteslaws providing access to post-conviction DNA testing, according to the Innocence Project. Three states, Alaska, Massachusetts, and Oklahoma, do not have laws providing access for post-conviction DNA testing. In a statement after the ruling, Attorney General Eric Holder noted that the court's decision would have a limited impact. "The court merely spoke about what is constitutional, not what is good policy," he said. "This administration believes that defendants should be permitted access to DNA evidence in a range of circumstances," he said. Mr. Holder noted the passage in 2004 of a federal law guaranteeing DNA access in federal cases. "I hope that in light of today's decision all levels of government Air 180will follow the federal government's lead by working to expand access to DNA evidence," he said. Others viewed the decision on a more personal level. "This ruling is devastating because the Supreme Court was William's last hope," said Evelyn Smalls, Osborne's sister, in a statement. "Alaska should have a law for DNA testing in cases like this, and we hope they pass one quickly." Thursday's high court ruling stems from a brutal crime near Anchorage, Alaska in 1993. Dexter Jackson and another man hired a prostitute. They drove her to a remote location where they raped and robbed her at gunpoint. The men beat her with an ax handle, shot at her, and then, assuming she was dead, buried her in the snow. She did not die. Later, police found ballistics evidence at the scene and a jordan shoes 11used blue condom that had belonged to the prostitute. Under police questioning, Mr. Jackson identified William Osborne as the other man involved in the attack. Osborne denies it. The condom was tested and showed a DNA match to Osborne. But DNA testing technology was not as precise in the 1990s as it is today. The test would have shown a match with approximately 15-16 percent of African-American men, according to experts. At the time of his trial, Osborne's lawyer decided not to conduct an independent and more precise DNA test. The lawyer made a strategic calculation that such a test might provide stronger evidence of her client's guilt. Nonetheless, the jury found Osborne guilty of sexual assault Pall Mall cigarettesand kidnapping. He was sentenced to 26 years in prison. On appeal, Osborne argued that his lawyer should have pushed for independent DNA testing. In addition, he claimed a right to conduct new tests on the biological material using more sophisticated and accurate technology than existed at the time of his trial. While his appeal was pending, Osborne applied for parole. As part of that process he was required to confess under oath to the rape and other crimes. He was released on parole in 2007. Osborne wasn't free for long. Within six months he was arrestedNike Women Dunk Low Mid & High for a different crime – an armed home invasion in which four victims were bound with duct tape and pistol whipped.

Obama: Israeli PM's speech opening for Mideast

Obama: Israeli PM's speech opening for Mideast WASHINGTON -- President Barack Obama on Monday welcomed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's endorsement of Palestinian independence as a way to restart peace talks and called on Arab neighbors to join the discussion. Bending to U.S. pressure in a speech a day earlier, Netanyahu backed down on decades of opposition to Palestinian statehood by endorsing an independent state beside Israel. He invited theAir Jordan 9 Palestinians and others in the Arab world to resume peace talks, but he attached conditions that were immediately derided as too restrictive. Obama on Monday downplayed the immediate criticism from Arab neighbors as predictable. "Well, first of all, I think it's important not to immediately assess the situation based on commentary the day after a speech," said Obama, whose aides distributed glowing reaction to his U.S.-Muslim speech the day after he delivered it in Cairo. "I think any time an Israeli prime minister makes a statement, the immediate reaction tends to be negative on one side. If the other side is making a statement, oftentimes the reaction is negative in Israel," he said. Netanyahu refused to freeze Israeli settlements in the West Bank,UGG Felicity as the U.S. is demanding. He also demanded that the Palestinians recognize Israel as a Jewish state and Palestinians refugees give up their goal of returning to Israel. Netanyahu insisted that a Palestinian state be demilitarized, and demanded that Jerusalem remain the capital of Israel. Obama emphasized points of Netanyahu's speech he found agreeable - specifically the call for two states- but not the caveats. "There were a lot of conditions, and obviously working through the conditions on Israel's side for security, as well as the Palestinian side for sovereignty and territorial integrity and the capacity to have a functioning, prosperous state, that's exactly what negotiations are supposed to be about," Obama said. "But what we're seeing is at least the possibility that we can restartAir Jordan shoes 17 serious talks," he said. Netanyahu's announcement came a week after Obama addressed the Muslim world and strongly reiterated U.S. backing for independent Israeli and Palestinian states living side by side in peace. Obama's trip to the Middle East sought to repair U.S. relations with Muslim nations that were badly frayed in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the invasion of Iraq. On Monday, Obama repeated his position that the United States will stand behind Israel's defense, but he told both sides' leaders that they face difficult political choices. "On the Israeli side, that means a cessation of settlements," said Obama, who publicly told Netanyahu the same during an Oval Office meeting earlier. To the Palestinians, Obama repeated that leaders must end anti-Israeli rhetoric in schools and recognize Israel. "Those are necessary pillars of any serious agreement that's toAir Jordan 18 be reached," he said. Obama also said that Arab neighbors must work with the Palestinians to tamp down tensions. "Israel's security concerns extend beyond simply the Palestinian Territories," he said. "They extend to concerns that they have in a whole host of neighbors where there's perceived - and often real - hostility towards Israel's security." Obama's remarks came at the end of an Oval Office meeting with Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi.

Moussavi: Painter, architect and possibly Iran's next president

Moussavi: Painter, architect and possibly Iran's next president (CNN) -- Mir Hossein Moussavi, Iran's former prime minister, has emerged as a serious contender to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who was, for months, considered a shoo-in for re-election to the Iranian presidencyA painter and architect who withdrew from the political front for two decades, Moussavi has emerged withAir Jordan 6 ring a platter of promises. He has said he wants to reform Iran into a global communicator that embraces freedom of speech. He's also taken an usual step in politics in Iran by relying heavily on his wife, a college professor. Her public support of his candidacy has underscored his professed support of women's rights. Largely an unknown to the rest of the world when he announced his bid in March, Moussavi has tried to be the foil to Ahmadinejad, who has earned a reputation internationally as a fundamentalist for his Holocaust denials, calls to annihilate Israel, and cat-and-mouse games with the United States and the United Nations over Iran's nuclear activities. "This anti-Ahmadinejad image is connecting with a lot of Iranians because many feel Ahmadinejad has gone too far, said too many outlandish things and is responsible for a serious financial crisis the country is in," said Afshin Molavi, a senior fellow at the New America Foundation, a nonprofit, nonpartisan public jordan shoes 15policy institute in Washington. Molavi is also the author of "The Soul of Iran," a book about Iran's middle-class struggling to free itself, under intense economic and cultural restraints, from the control of the state. Moussavi was Iran's prime minister from 1981 to 1989 and oversaw the nation's eight-year war with Iraq. He has been largely praised by analysts across varied political leanings for that. But when the constitution was reformed in the late 1980s, removing the job of prime minister, Moussavi retreated to a life outside the public sphere for two decades. "Twenty years -- what has he done in that time? No one really knows," said Shireen Hunter, a Georgetown University visiting professor and Iranian author of numerous books on the nation's political show winter 2008history who interviewed Moussavi just as he was officially exiting politics. "What you have is a war and a history that the younger Iranians do not know about or remember, so they know less about him and see him as the reformer he says that he is," Hunter said. She spoke with Moussavi for her 1992 book "Iran and the World." "I quoted Moussavi as saying that Iran did not suffer as much from the Soviet Union as it did from America," Hunter said. "He was very anti-Western. He presided over a lot of nationalism [during his time as prime minister,] and now he is saying that he is a reformer? I don't believe in born-again Democrats. I'm skeptical." It's an image or impression the people are being moved by, she and Molavi contend, that may not be based on hard evidence. "There were still freedoms that were stifled under Moussavi," Molavi said. "[But] what Iranians seem to remember, what is lingering, is that he steered the country relatively well in a timeAir Jordan shoes 14 of crisis during the war." Now Moussavi has seized on Iran's most pressing problem: its economy. "There's a sort of overwhelming support now for an opening up of the country to the international community and some access to the free-market economy because, frankly, Iran's own economy is on the verge of utter collapse," said Reza Aslan, an analyst for DailyBeast.com and author of the book "No God But God," an analysis of Islam in politics and culture. Last week, tensions between the candidates reached a fever pitch. During a recent fiery television debate, Moussavi accused Ahmadinejad of being a radical and turning Iran into a "dictatorship." He said Ahmadinejad was an "adventurist" when it came to foreign policy. The acrimony between the candidates has appeared to help Moussavi. During a June 3 television debate, Ahmadinejad called MoussaviShox Junga II 2 "corrupt." The president then showed a picture of Moussavi's wife, a well-known political science professor, and accused her of skipping university entrance exams. Zahra Rahnavard, who has been touted as a possible first "first lady" of Iran, has threatened to sue Ahmadinejad for defamation, according to several reports. The heated tone of the election has translated to the streets.

Chrysler dealers scramble to unload vehicles

Chrysler dealers scramble to unload vehicles Peter J. Walsh, the owner of Walsh Dodge in Jersey City, N.J., started out selling used cars in his hometown 28 years ago after the birth of his daughter. He slowly built his business, and felt as if he'd finally made it when he earned his Chrysler shingle in 2000. But on Tuesday, Walsh Dodge will lose that shingle — as will 788 other dealers across the country. Auburn Hills, Mich.-based Chrysler has asked a bankruptcy court for permission to terminate theAir Max Plus franchise agreements of about 25 percent of its dealers. Chrysler needs to cut costs, and claims current sales levels don't justify a network of 3,189 dealers. For Walsh and the others on the "hit list," the last days of selling Dodge, Jeep and Chrysler vehicles have been filled with quick sales at deep discounts, along with sad goodbyes from longtime customers and feelings of dismay and anger toward the automaker they worked with for years. "It is what it is. It's just a tough situation," Walsh said, speaking inside his dealership Saturday morning. "It's been difficult mentally the past couple of months, but we'll be OK. I don't feel as bad for myself as I do for the young guys with families that work for me." Chrysler maintains that the franchises singled out for termination were chosen because they weren't profitable, didn't have all of the automaker's three brands under one roof, or were located too close to another Chrysler dealer. But the dealers argued in court that a smaller dealer base won't save the company any substantial money. They say the dealers cover their own costs, paying for everything fromAir Jordan shoes 7the vehicles on their lots to employees, advertising and tools. Walsh said that while Chrysler's products were good, its dealer support was always poor — too focused on the automaker's own short-term needs. And while he might have been underperforming some of Chrysler's sales criteria, Walsh claims some of that was the automaker's fault, pointing to its insistence that he sell more pickup trucks — a vehicle unsuited to the densely populated urban strip he serves across the Hudson River from New York City. "How many Dodge pickups can I sell in Jersey City? It's not Waco, Texas," Walsh said. A court hearing that began Thursday in New York with testimony from over a dozen dealers is scheduled to continue with legal arguments on Tuesday. U.S. Judge Arthur Gonzalez is expected to rule Air B Huaracheafter the arguments conclude. Steven Landry, Chrysler's executive vice president of North American sales, said Tuesday's deadline remains fixed. Dealers can sell the vehicles after that date, but they won't be able to offer Chrysler sales incentives, making it tough for them to compete. "We won't be changing any dealers on the list. We won't be changing the date," he said. Landry said Chrysler had commitments for the inventory of 42,000 vehicles on the lots of the affected dealers. Dealers have sold 16,000 vehicles to customers since the May 14 announcement and Landry said the remaining 26,000 cars and trucks would be purchased by remaining dealers. Chuck Eddy, a Youngstown, Ohio, dealer who was among those chosen to remain with Chrysler, said dealers have quickly bought up the inventory of those going out of business and are preparing for Jordan basketball shoes 3the transition. "I have no fire sale going on. There's no dealer in my town who was terminated having a fire sale," Eddy said. "People are buying the car for the true value." At the Viva Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge in El Paso, Texas, finance manager Jay Welsh said news of financial trouble with Chrysler and the upcoming terminations of other dealerships has done little to deter new car buyers. The dealership, which sells all three of Chrysler's brands and escaped termination, sold between 55 and 65 cars a month in April and May, compared with an average of about 25 cars a month in January, February and March, he said. A few buyers have questioned the viability of warranties, while others have been looking for "fire sale" prices that the dealership has yet to offer, he said. But other dealers said they moved quickly after finding out they were air jordan melo 1.5losing their franchise agreements, hoping to keep their losses to a minimum. By late last week, Dale Horn, owner of a Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep dealership in Malvern, Ark., had sold 30 of the 35 cars and trucks he had when the company told him that his franchise would be yanked. Horn said that in exchange for its help unloading the vehicles, Chrysler wanted him to sign papers allowing it to shop the inventory "at a figure less than it cost me." Instead, he decided to try to sell it all himself, taking losses on all but a few, while making tiny profits on the others. "In essence, I paid people to take some of my cars," he said. "It's just not a pleasant deal. If I'm as small as I am, having the problems that I'm having, I feel so bad for the guys thatEpique cigarettes have got 200 in inventory, or 300," he said. At other dealers, longtime customers have showed up to both buy a car and say goodbye. Janet Reuther Schopp, dealer and general manager at Reuther Chrysler Jeep in suburban St. Louis, said former customers and people she'd never seen before came in to help whittle down her already scaled-back inventory of 125 vehicles. "It was a huge show of respect for us," said Schopp, who continues a family business her father started 50 years ago. "They thought it was the right thing to do." A neighbor sent her niece in to buy. Her attorney bought two cars for himself and his wife. A stranger who lost his job made a point of driving out of his way to buy at Reuther and a Boeing Air Jordan shoes 8employee in St. Louis bought a car from her on principle. Nearly all of them paid full price. Mike Lobb, general manager of Dave Croft Motors, in Collinsville, Ill., outside St. Louis, will try to survive by selling used cars and running a service center, but still held out hope Saturday that a reprieve might come from Chrysler or the bankruptcy court. Croft, which normally has 350 new cars on the lot, is down to 100 vehicles. Eighty of his sales in the last three weeks have been to longtime customers. Walsh, the Jersey City dealer, said he has about 14 vehicles left, which he expects to be redistributed to other Chrysler dealers. He said he's glad he didn't take more vehicles when Chrysler officials were pushing dealers to help save the company by boosting their inventories this year. For Walsh, who plans to keep selling used cars, the move marks Air Max 360the end of Chrysler's slow painful demise for him. He had to reduce his work force from 30 people to 14 during the past year. And his sales of new and used vehicles have declined a third from their peak of 1,500 units a year in 2000, he said. "My employees have been with me an average of seven years — they're all local people — and it puts a hole in my heart when they come in here and I have to tell them I'm letting them go," Walsh said.

Group Therapy Prevents Depression in Teens, Study Finds Depression often strikes during adolescence, and teenagers whose parents have a history of depression are at particularly high risk. Now, a large clinical trial has found that a group cognitive behavioral program that teaches coping and problem- solving skills to these high-risk teens can reduce their risk suhau leatherof developing the mood disorder. But the success rate of the prevention program varied greatly depending on the mental health status of the teenagers’ parents at the time they began intervention, the study also found. The program was much more effective than standard care if the teens’ parents were also without depression when the intervention began. The study was published in this week’s Journal of the American Medical Association. “Were we surprised? No,” said Judy Garber, a professor of psychologyAir Jordan 3.5 and human development at Vanderbilt University in Nashville. “There is evidence in the literature that kids don’t respond as well to treatment if the parent is depressed.” John Weisz, a professor of psychology at Harvard University who was not involved in the trial, said the results may help identify the best candidates for the prevention program. He said there were several reasons why treatment may be less effective when an adolescent’s parent is depressed. “It may be the biological risk for depression is greater in these adolescents — that if the parents were once depressed but aren’t depressed any longer, the biological risk isn’t as great," he said. Another possibility is that living with a depressed parent is difficult suryaand stressful for a child, he added, while a third possibility is that teenagers model their parents’ behavior. The new study is a randomized controlled clinical trial conducted in four cities: Nashville, Boston, Pittsburgh and Portland, Ore. The trial included 316 adolescents between the ages of 13 and 17, all of whom had parents who were depressed or had been depressed at some earlier point in the child’s life. The teenagers were randomly assigned to either the prevention program, which consisted of eight weekly 90-minute group sessions followed by six monthly sessions, or to receive only the usual care. While almost one-third of the teens who got the usual care developed depression during the eight months of the study, only 21 percent of teens who participated in the prevention program became depressed. But among teens whose parents were free of depression when the jordan shoes 2.5intervention started, the impact of the prevention program was more dramatic. Only 11.7 percent of those teens became depressed, compared to 40.5 percent of teens with healthy parents who received the usual care. Among teenagers whose parents were depressed, the cognitive behavioral program was only slightly more effective. Some 31.2 percent of these adolescents went on to become depressed themselves, Air Jordan shoes 2.5compared with 24.3 percent among those who received the usual care. The researchers said that difference was not statistically significant.

UPDATE 3-GM bondholder deadline passes; focus now on Ch. 11 * GM's board meets to review options * Bondholders had until 5 p.m. EDT/2100 GMT to take deal * GM expected to file for bankruptcy on Monday (Adds detail on GM stock price, amount of government investment, recasts second paragraph) By Poornima Gupta and Kevin Krolicki DETROIT, May 30 (Reuters) - General Motors Corp finished a key piece of business on Saturday before a bankruptcy filing planned for Monday as the deadline expired for bondholders to Air Jordan 13accept an exchange offer brokered by the Obama administration. The development came as GM's board met for a second consecutive day to review developments and finalize plans for what has become the most widely telegraphed and carefully orchestrated bankruptcy in the history of American business. GM (GM.N) would not comment on how many investors had expressed support for its bondholder swap that would give them up to 25 percent ownership of a reorganized company in exchange for $27 billion in bond debt. GM bondholders had until 5 p.m. EDT/2100 GMT to register their support for the deal. A group representing about a dozen major GM bondholders also had no comment. A bankruptcy filing by GM would rank as the third-largest bankruptcy in U.S. history and the largest and most complex manufacturing bankruptcy ever. GM has been losing market share since the early 1980s when itair jordan XVI commanded 45 percent of the U.S. market. It has been hurt by its reliance on a truck-dominated vehicle line-up and by a deep plunge in demand as credit tightened in 2008. Since last week, GM has been racing to complete a series of last-minute deals intended to help speed its way through a fast- track bankruptcy that would see it emerge under the majority ownership of the U.S. government. Those deals have included a new contract for the United Auto Workers union and an agreement to spare GM's Opel brand from collapse in a deal brokered by the German government. Bondholders have been one of the last pieces to fall into GM's complicated bankruptcy puzzle under the direction of the autos task force appointed by the White House and headed by former investmentJordan basketball shoes 8 banker Steve Rattner. GM is readying a filing for Chapter 11 protection on Monday and President Barack Obama is expected to discuss the government's unprecedented role in the remaking of an American industrial icon. The U.S. government plans to invest a total of $60 billion in GM. A further $12.5 billion of government funding has gone to its affiliated finance company GMAC. "My preference would have been to stay out of it completely," Obama said in an interview with NBC News recorded on Friday at the White House and aired on Saturday. "But the alternative was to see a liquidation, bankruptcy in which an enormous institution with huge importance to our economy simply gets broken up into pieces." U.S. officials said on Saturday they welcomed a deal clinched by GermanyAir Max 360 II 2 with Canadian auto parts group Magna (MGa.TO), GM and the U.S. government to save German carmaker Opel from GM's imminent bankruptcy. "This deal is a positive step for the auto industry. The auto task force will continue its close engagement with the German government on the issue," a senior administration official said. MOVING ON GOVERNMENT TIME In late March, the Obama administration put the automaker on 60-day notice to restructure and clinch concessionary deals with its union and bondholders. The U.S. government has already pumped $19.4 billion in emergency funds into the Detroit-based automaker since the start of the year. The White House has said the speed of the bankruptcy proceedings forLambert and butler cigarettes Chrysler LLC since April 30 demonstrate the possibility of an orderly restructuring of a major U.S. carmaker and could be a model for GM. GM Chief Executive Fritz Henderson is scheduled to host a news conference on Monday in New York -- the location of the Chrysler bankruptcy proceeding and the likely site of the court that will oversee GM's reorganization. GM's bankruptcy is also likely to add to the strain on the auto industry -- including rival Ford Motor Co (F.N) and suppliers, many of which are already struggling to survive as GM's purchasing budget runs to about $94 billion annually. "The real question is what's going to happen to the supply base now," said Dennis Virag, president of Michigan-based Automotive Consulting Group. While a bankruptcy by a company that once led the global auto industry will be an economic milestone, it will no longer be a shock. GM's former CEO, Rick Wagoner, was fired by the Obama administration at the end of March for having closed the door to bankruptcy. By contrast, Henderson, his successor, has said repeatedlyAir Jordan shoes 13 that bankruptcy was probable. In order to shield workers and suppliers from any bankruptcy-related disruption in payments, GM last week made early parts and wage payments. Shares of GM fell below $1 on Friday, a level last seen during the Great Depression. The stock closed at 75 cents on what is expected to be its last trading day before bankruptcy. GM has lost $88 billion since 2005 as it struggled to slash production capacity and jobs. It has burned through $68 million a day over the past year and $111 million every day in the most recent quarter as its sales slump deepened. Since 2000, GM has slashed over 100,000 jobs in the United States. Air Jordan 14An additional 21,000 GM factory jobs are scheduled to be cut under the deal just approved by the UAW. Obama: Crucial role for Huntsman in China

Washington » President Barack Obama on Saturday named Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman Jr. to serve as U.S. ambassador to China, a dream job friends say the Republican governor had eyed for years. Obama, appearing in the Diplomatic Room of the White Air Jordan 2009House alongside Huntsman and his extended family, said Huntsman will bring a lifetime of experience to a post that is one of the world's most important ambassadorships. "I can think of no one better suited to take on this assignment than the governor of the great state of Utah, Jon Huntsman," Obama said. "I hope the people of Utah will forgive me and understand how proud the nation is for their governor's willingness to answer his nation's call." Huntsman, who co-chaired the presidential campaign of Obama's opponent, Sen. John McCain, said he never expected to be called by the "person who beat us," but that he "humbly accepts" the offer. "I grew up understanding the most basic responsibility one has is service to country," Huntsman said. "When the president of the United States asks you to step up ad serve in a capacityAir Jordan 10.5 like this, that to me is the end of the conversation and the beginning of the obligation to rise to the challenge." The president's move likely takes out a potential 2012 competitor and also bulks up the number of Republicans in senior positions in the Obama administration. Huntsman had made waves in the Republican party for touting more moderate views, such as his support for civil unions and for a regional cap-and-trade market. Huntsman, who is expected to resign his office upon Senate confirmation, is well-versed in Asian affairs after serving as U.S. ambassador to Singapore under President George H.W. Bush and also as an LDS missionary in Taiwan in his youth. The governor, now serving in his second term, is also fluentAir Jordan 6 ring in Mandarin Chinese and has an adopted Chinese daughter, Gracie Mei. During his first term, Huntsman led a trade delegation to China and was scheduled for a second trip next week before it was canceled because of swine flu fears. Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, praised Huntsman's nomination. "Jon is very qualified to take this job and should be an excellent ambassador," Hatch said. Huntsman planned a news conference for Monday with Lt. Gov. Gary Herbert to discuss the transition. Neither Huntsman nor Obama took questions at the brief announcement Saturday.

Microsoft Faces European Antitrust Hearing in June

European Union (EU) antitrust regulators have set an early June date for an oral hearing during which Microsoft Corp. can defend its practice of bundling Internet Explorer (IE) with Windows news reports said last week. Jonathan Todd, spokesman for the EU's Competition Commission, told several news outlets, including the Reuters and Dow Jones wire services, that the agency had set June 3-5 for Microsoft to respond to charges that it "shields" IE from competition. Todd did not immediately reply to a request for confirmation.Air Force 25 Sources close to Microsoft, however, said that while the company has requested the hearing -- a procedural matter that was required when it submitted its written response last week -- it has not made a final decision about whether it will actually go through with the conference. The hearing would be Microsoft's chance to answer EU charges that it "distorts competition" in the browser market by including IE with Windows. The "tying," as the commission put it, gives IE "an artificial distribution advantage which other Web browsers are unable to match." The accusations stem from a December 2007 complaint by Opera Software ASA, the Oslo-based development firm whose Opera browser currently accounts for less than 1% of the market. At the time, Opera said IE "harmed the Web" and demanded Microsoft unbundle the browser and adhere to Web standards. Since January, several chief browser rivals, including Mozilla Wholesale cigarettesCorp. and Google Inc., which make Firefox and Chrome, respectively, have joined the case as third-party participants. Three weeks ago, a trade group that includes other competitors, among them Adobe, IBM and Oracle, were also given access to the allegations. Companies that have been granted third-party status will be allowed to participate in the June hearing. Although the commission has not specified what it might require of Microsoft, it has hinted it could fine the company, force it to allow users to choose alternate browsers or require it to disable IE. Microsoft has added a "kill switch" of sorts to Windows 7 that will let users prevent IE8 from running. Opera's CEO, however, has said that he considers Microsoft's move to be insufficient. The company's Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC), which is expected to publicly launch tomorrow, will be the first chance most users have of testing that kill switch. The case could go on for years after the hearing. In an earlierNike Air Force 1 Mid antitrust action, in which the EU charged Microsoft with blocking competitors' access to technical information they needed to make their software work smoothly with Windows, Microsoft defended itself at a November 2003 hearing. The case was finally settled in October 2007, after Microsoft lost a critical appeal and acknowledged it would comply with the EU's demands. According to Web metrics firm Net Applications Inc., IE accounted for 66.1% of the browser market in April, down 0.72% from the previous month.

National Day of (Conservative, Christian) Prayer

National Day of (Conservative, Christian) Prayer By Steven Waldman Conservative religious groups are criticizing President Obama for what the Associated Press called his "muted" observance of National Prayer Day Thursday. "At this time in our country's history, we would hope our President would recognize more fully the importance of prayer," said Shirley Dobson, Wholesale cigaretteschairwoman of National Day of Prayer Task Force, which organizes the prayer day festivities. The Family Research Council said Obama's decision to not have a big White House prayer event constituted a "de-emphasis on prayer." I think this is actually a case of religious conservatives having cut off their noses to spite their faces. Putting aside for a moment the question of whether it's appropriate for the White House to be involved in encouraging prayer, this particular occasion has evolved in a way that almost guaranteed its demise. The Bush White House had National Prayer Day run by a conservative, evangelistic Christian group. The mission statement on the Task Force's Web site states that "in accordance with Biblical truth," the Task Force seeks to, among other things: "Foster unity within the Christian Church" "Publicize and preserve America's Christian Heritage" "Glorify the Lord in word and deed" The event became a showcase for religious conservative Christians to lead the nation in prayer. I think it's wonderful that groups like this are encouraging prayer. I hope they organize millions to pray this week and in the future. But for them to have an official or semi-official cheap cigarettesrole is clearly against the spirit of the Constitution and insulting to all those non-Evangelicals who pray (not to mention those who don't.) As James Madison argued, politicizing prayer is a great way to turn people away not only from politics but prayer. I believe Obama had no choice but downplay any event led by this Task Force. Instead he issued a proclamation which will satisfy neither conservatives nor those who think the President should stay far away from religion: "I call upon Americans to pray in thanksgiving for our freedoms and blessings and to ask for God's continued guidance, grace, and protection for this land that we love."

UFC 17: Chuck gets his start

Chuck Liddell would go on to become the biggest draw and most popular fighter in UFC history. But at UFC 17 at the Mobile Civic Center on May 15, 1998, in Alabama, Liddell made his mixed martial arts debut in a non-televised bout against Noe Hernandez. He’d go on to win a decision “The Iceman” wasn’t the only man who’d go on to a prominent career in MMA on the show. Dan Henderson, who became the only man to simultaneously hold two weight class titles in major MMA history, also made his debut in a fight against Allan Goes. Henderson was knocked down twice by punches from Goes, air jordan shoeswho wasn’t known as the striker. And Henderson may have been submitted had Goes not committed a foul. After the second knockdown, Goes kicked Henderson, which was against the rules when a man was down. He immediately went for the rear naked choke and probably would have gotten the submission. But referee Joe Hamilton broke them and stood them up, because of the foul. As a result, Henderson was able to clear his head and recover. Like Liddell, he won a unanimous decision. The card had a strange format, with a middleweight tournament, a middleweight title bout, three super fights and a fight billed as an exhibition. Frank Shamrock successfully defended his middleweight belt by submitting Jeremy Horn, who’d go on to be a UFC staple for years. Color commentator Jeff Blatnick, the Greco-Roman wrestling gold medalist in the super heavyweight division at the 1984 Olympics, was officially named the UFC commissioner, play-by-play man Mike Goldberg announced during the broadcast. Goldberg noted that Blatnick would attempt to get MMA sanctioned Air jordannationally. The card was dubbed “Redemption” as a reference to Mark Coleman’s return after a surprise defeat to Maurice Smith at UFC 14. He was to face Randy Couture, but Couture withdrew from an injury. Instead, he met Pete Williams, who knocked Coleman out with a kick to the face. Tank Abbott escaped a rear naked choke attempt and an arm bar attempt to pound out Hugo Duarte in less than a minute. Significantly, Abbott dropped over 50 pounds for the fight and didn’t have the large midsection for which he’d been known. Middleweight tournament Alternates Chuck Liddell def. Japan Must Move Away From U.S. Dependency, DPJ’s Hatoyama Says

By Toko Sekiguchi and Takashi Hirokawa Feb. 24 (Bloomberg) --

The Democratic Party of Japan, which is likely to take power after this year’s elections, will seek an alliance with the U.S. that is less subordinate than that of the last 50 years, a senior DPJ lawmaker said. “We want to move away from U.S. dependency to a more equal alliance,” party Secretary General Yukio Hatoyama said in an interview in Tokyo yesterday. “We’ve followed the U.S. subserviently in the past.” The DPJ, which has never led the government,Shox 2:40 is poised to oust the Liberal Democratic Party from its almost unbroken half- century of control. Party head Ichiro Ozawa has called for a more assertive foreign policy and unsuccessfully opposed the use of Japanese naval vessels for refueling aid in the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan. With Japanese Prime Minister Taro Aso’s approval ratings falling toward single digits, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton took the unusual step of meeting Ozawa and Hatoyama during her stop in Tokyo last week. Clinton and President Barack Obama have emphasized the importance of ties with Japan, and Ozawa assured Clinton that a DPJ-led government will still treat the bilateral alliance as the country’s most important one. “Ozawa told Clinton he is misunderstood by the U.S.” as being antagonistic toward the alliance, Hatoyama said. “We are only looking for an equal relationship, which we believe the U.S. also prefers.” Hatoyama spoke hours before Aso left for Washington to be the first foreign leader to visit Obama. The Japanese premier’s public support is falling as his plans to lift the world’s second-largest economy from a worsening recession have stalled in parliament. Criticism of Leadership Aso has come under fire from senior members of his own party for his lack of leadership, which was underscored last week when Finance Minister Shoichi Nakagawa quit after appearing to be drunk at a press conference in Rome following a meeting of ministers from the Group of Seven nations. “Aso’s cabinet of buddies led to that unimaginable event,” said Hatoyama, who like the prime minister and Nakagawa is the son of a prominent politician. The DPJ will Nike Men Air Force 1 Lowcreate a cabinet based on “not on their electoral prospects, but on merit,” Hatoyama said. “In this light, it’s quite possible that non-lawmakers will be appointed.” Hatoyama’s party controls the less-powerful upper house of parliament ahead of a lower-house election that must be called by Sept. 10. The DPJ’s support rate is at 29 percent, compared with the LDP’s 20 percent, the Mainichi newspaper said yesterday. The same poll put Aso’s approval rating at 11 percent. Convincing Voters The DPJ must convince voters that it can govern if it is to unseat the LDP, which has run Japan for all but 10 months since 1955, Hatoyama said. The one interlude, UGG Swell Tallthe 1993 coalition government of Morihiro Hosokawa, collapsed amid internal divisions and allowed the LDP to regain power. “There are many people who, due to the failure of the Hosokawa administration, feel that a change in government means returning to that time of ideological Shox Warriorclashes,” Hatoyama said. “There are still those who aren’t confident about putting the government in the hands of the opposition.”

Cambodian art: Past to present

Hong Kong, China (CNN) -- Bamboo, woven into the shape of human stomachs. Red, sky blue and orange pencil shavings glued onto a large canvas form a woman's traditional hair clip. A collage of magazine clippings, drawings and found materials depict Cambodia's tumultuous modern history. These are a few of the offerings on hand in Hong Kong at one of the first large international exhibitions of artists from Cambodia. The work by 14 artists varies in practice-- Shox Ride & Plusvideo, photography, collage, wood shavings, paper, bamboo and painting-- as well as in themes, from reflecting on the Southeast Asian nation's genocidal Khmer Rouge regime to the emerging modern Cambodia, with traffic lights and all. "Every artist in this show is referencing ancient tradition and recent history," said Phnom Penh-based curator Erin Gleeson, noting the wall-size depiction in folded paper of the serpent Naga (which in Cambodian culture represents the people's mythical birth) to a collage of 20th-century Cambodia and its six different regime changes. "The show is looking at the present -- 'Forever Until Now' is the title -- and it is this lineage of the past, you see that in the show, and then you see artists that arrive at the present," she added. The show opens Friday and runs through March 22 at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery. Gallery owner and director Katie de Tilly said she believed it was important the artists get international exposure. " ... it's really at the beginning of their art emergence.UGG Adirondack Boot II Obviously, they've had a very hard history," she said. "This is really the beginning of contemporary Cambodians who are expressing very original ideas in their artworks and I think that that's what makes it very unique and to show to the rest of the world." Cambodia, which lost an estimated one-quarter of its population or at least 1.7 million people -- including an estimated 90 percent of its artists -- under the 1970s Khmer Rouge regime, has a small but growing artistic community: there are some 50 practicing artists out of its 14 million people, Gleeson said. The genocide and ensuing war, which only ended in the last decade or so, stifled the development of the arts in one of the world's poorest countries. "The legacy of that is now in every facet of a developing society," said Gleeson, who noted the country had no art books when she arrived in 2002 on a fellowship to teach art history. "There's an absence of infrastructure for them, there's an absence of materials, there is no art store. ... they are quite inventive about mixing materials to make them of a higher quality or last longer, but in many cases they don't know archival techniques." The harsh weather conditions -- a dusty, hot season and a rainy monsoon -- add to the trying work conditions. "Everything's against them," she added. "Their parents in many cases are coming from a really disadvantaged background, as the majority of the country is economically." Some of the art included in the show looks at the Cambodia of today, such as Leang Seckon's "Three Greens" -- an acrylic painting showing children in school uniform crossing a Air Force 25road with a yellow light, red light and three green lights, along with cows and roosters. The piece shows the changes in a country that recently got stop lights, with animals, people and traffic mingling on the main roads of the capital. Sopheap Pich, a Cambodian-American whose family migrated to the U.S. in 1984, works with bamboo and rattan -- materials often used in Cambodian traditional farming and crafts -- to make sculptures. His work, "Cycle 2," is the joining of the stomachs of an infant and an elderly person that for him brought up ideas of Cambodian traditional village life. "You belong to each other, you help each other out," he said. "But also, if you look at the lines and you see how it's shaped by hand, it's not very perfect, so it's also about struggle... "You could say it's a cycle of trying to hold onto each other, now we are living everywhere in the world, Cambodians are all over the planet," he added. "All this technique and pattern that I am quite obsessed with ... it's about this idea of trying to hold on with very simple means." Chan Dany, a 25-year-old artist who graduated from one of the country's three art schools, creates textured patterns that appear almost like tapestry using pencil shavings in variousShox Allegria Glow colors. The works on display in the show are from a series based on Cambodian architectural decor, such as door and window shutter carvings, and include ancient Khmer forms whose shapes are derived from nature. "When I started learning art, the teacher introduced a lot of new ways of making art, new ideas that were very difficult for me, so I had to think a lot," he said through a translator. "So then I looked around at what my classmates were doing and I started to think about what they weren't using for their work, so I started to collect the things that they didn't use when they were making art and started to think about my way of making art using those materials." "I like the first piece I did (using the pencil shaving technique) because I had never done it this way before and since then I kept on making it," he said. The younger artists "seem to be expressing something more fresh," while the work by artists from the older generation is "much more heavy," de Tilly said. Some of the works of the Khmer Rouge period include a painting by Vann Nath, one of seven people to survive the regime's infamous S-21 torture prison. His painting, "Pray for Peace," UGG Adirondack Talldepicts women wearing traditional Cambodian funeral scarves praying en masse under troubled skies by stormy seas. Another work, Leang's "Prison Guard," tells the life of Duch, a former teacher who ran S-21 and goes on trial Tuesday before a U.N.-backed tribunal on charges that include crimes against humanity. The art scene has been growing slowly in the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh over the last few years: Sopheap started a group to promote contemporary Cambodian art practices and two art institutes offer programs apart from the Royal University of Fine Arts. One factor that has also made Cambodian contemporary artists different from their counterparts, for example in neighboring Vietnam, has been the lack of outside influence, such as was the case with Chinese contemporary art 30 years ago, de Tilly said. "Cambodia still is very much influenced by itself and so the development is happening on a slower pace but as well very interesting," she said. "They seem to not have as much international exposure to materials, magazines, publications, so you really do feel -- it was the same just after the CulturalNike Air Force 1 Mid Revolution in China -- that they didn't have exposure to many publications and things, and so their art was developing at that moment in time." " ... it's very interesting to document it and see what's going to happen in the future," she said. Part of the exhibit will be shown at another of the gallery's venues in Hong Kong and will run through April 25.

Tony Blair beat European leaders yesterday in the race to meet Barack Obama. The former Prime Minister met the US President at a National Prayer Breakfast in Washington. And he warned Mr Obama not to get Shox Gocarried away with his worldwide adulation. Mr Blair said: "You don't need cheerleaders but partners, not spectators but supporters. "The truest friends are those still around when the going gets toughest." Mr Blair, who is now an envoy to the Middle East, also told President Obama he should turn to religion in times of difficulty. He said: "Should it be tested, I hope your faith can sustain you and your family. The public eye is not always the most congenial." President Obama in turn was quick to praise Mr Blair's "leadership". He said: "I want to thank my good friend Tony BlairUGG Summit for coming. He has been an example to so many people around the world of what dedicated leadership can accomplish." There has been a diplomatic race between European leaders to become the first to meet President Obama, with Gordon Brown the first to get a phone call. Old friends McHale, Bird still toiling away in NBA INDIANAPOLIS Timberwolves coach Kevin McHale never imagined when they were young and wild and winning championships together in Boston that he, Larry Bird and Danny Ainge all someday Shox Electricwould run NBA teams. ¶ And yet here they all are. ¶ "I don't think you envision anything when you're 25," Bird said. McHale swears the gray hairs in his head are breeding since he returned to coaching nearly two months ago, and Bird's facial features seemingly droop a little more before your very eyes. And yet -- with their playing legacies and financial futures long ago assured and their managerial acumen still open for lively debate -- they remain in the game on the other side of 50, because competition is in their blood and basketball Nike Men Air Force 1 Highis what they've always done. "I know Kevin worked hard as a youngster, and I had all kinds of jobs," said Bird, the Indiana Pacers' president of basketball operations. "But when you get right down to it, this is what we know." Ainge and McHale collaborated two summers ago on a seismic trade that completely reshaped two franchises: It brought the Celtics both Kevin Garnett and their 17th title and set the Wolves on a painful rebuilding process that inevitably sent McHale back to the sidelines. Two days after the Celtics beat the Wolves in Boston withoutUGG Stormburst Garnett present, McHale will coach from one bench and Bird will watch from behind the other tonight when the Wolves and Pacers play at Conseco Fieldhouse. On Monday, McHale for the first time was named the Western Conference Coach of the Month for January after leading the Wolves to a 10-4 record one month after they went 2-14. It's a place McHale never thought he'd be, neither 25 years ago when all three players watched how Red Auerbach built a team nor three months ago.   Roche Makes Hostile Bid for Genentech, Lowers Price (Update2)

Roche Makes Hostile Bid for Genentech, Lowers Price (Update2) Jan. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Roche Holding AG, whose $43.7 billion bid to buy all of Genentech Inc. in July was rejected, lowered the acquisition price by 2.8 percent and took the offer for the cancer-drug maker directly to shareholders. The cash offering replaces the original $89-a-share proposal that was intended to lead to a negotiated merger, the Basel, Switzerland-based company said in a statementNike air shox today. Roche will begin a tender offer within two weeks. The latest approach, Roche’s second unsolicited bid following the purchase of U.S. diagnostics company Ventana Medical Systems Inc. last year, comes on the heels of Pfizer Inc.’s $68 billion planned takeover of Wyeth announced on Jan. 26. Drugmakers are seeking a way out of the deepening global recession that threatens prices and increases the pressure to speed more products to the market at a time when some of the industry’s biggest medicines are losing patent protection. “It’s pretty much Ventana revisited and along with it comes risks and potential benefits,” said Karl Heinz Koch, an analyst at Helvea in Zurich. “Because it’s no longer friendly, there’s a higher risk of losing key people.” Roche gained as much as 3.4 percent in Zurich trading to 165.7 Swiss francs, selling for 163.7 francs as of 9:33 a.m. to give it a market value of 142 billion francs ($123 billion). Genentech gained 65 cents, or less than 1 percent, to close at $84.09 in New York yesterday, 2.8 percent below today’s offer price. Nike air ForceThat gives Genentech a market value of $88.5 billion. Direct Offer “In light of the lack of progress towards an agreed transaction” with Genentech, “Roche has now decided to make an offer directly to Genentech shareholders,” the Swiss company said in the statement. Full ownership would help Roche, which has held a stake in the U.S. company for almost 20 years, boost income from Genentech ’s products and ensures access to its labs after an existing accord expires in 2015. Roche intends to keep Genentech’s research and early drug development independent, and said it would move its own U.S. commercial operations to Genentech’s South San Francisco, California, site. The combined U.S. pharmaceutical operations would carry the Genentech name, Roche said. The Swiss drugmaker said in July the weakness of the dollar against the franc played a role in the timing of its offer. The U.S. currency has since strengthened about 13 percent against the franc. Second for Schwan A takeover would be the second major transaction for Severin Schwan, 41, who took over from Franz B. Humer as chief executive officer less than a year ago. Schwan led Roche’s $3.4 billion purchase of Ventana as head of Roche’s diagnostics unit. “It fulfils a long-term strategic goal for Roche to boostUGG their presence in the U.S. market,” said Helvea’s Koch. Buying Genentech would cut costs and boost earnings for Roche, the world’s biggest maker of tumor-fighting drugs. The Swiss company has used Genentech’s advances in cancer treatment to become the fastest-growing among the world’s largest pharmaceutical manufacturers. Genentech products, including the Rituxan and the Avastin cancer medicines, account for about 40 percent of Roche’s revenue. Avastin is approved to treat colon, lung and breast tumors and is being tested in more than 400 clinical trials involving 40,000 patients worldwide. Avastin may also become the best- selling medicine in the world within six years, according to London-based consultant EvaluatePharma. The medicine generated Nike air shox 3.7 billion francs in sales for Roche during the first nine months of 2008. Conditions Attached Roche’s offer is subject to the majority of outstanding shares being tendered and is conditional upon Roche obtaining sufficient financing. The Swiss drugmaker plans to finance the transaction with a mixture of its own cash, commercial paper, bonds and bank loans. The Swiss company plans to tap bond markets first for financing. Pfizer’s takeover of Wyeth had no influence on the decision to pursue a hostile bid for Genentech, Humer said on a conference call. Roche’s move follows an agreement by its controllingaNike air Force family two days ago, extending a shareholders pact to keep their majority stake in one pool for an unlimited period and preserving the Swiss company’s independence. “Roche definitely needs this deal and has committed so much to it that they can’t really go back,” Romain Pasche, a fund manager at Vontobel Asset Management in Zurich, who helps manageUGG 750 million Swiss francs in investments including Roche shares, said before the announcement. Greenhill & Co. is acting as financial adviser to Roche and Davis Polk & Wardwell is legal counsel.

Obama tackles Afghanistan and Mideast conflict

Obama tackles Afghanistan and Mideast conflict WASHINGTON (AP) — Taking on two of his toughest foreign policy challenges, President Barack Obama pledged to find a new course in Afghanistan and to help Israel achieve a broad peace with the Arab world. On his second full day in office, Obama on Thursday also sought to reverse one of the most contentious policies of the Bush administration by signing an executive orderNike air shox to close the Guantanamo Bay prison for terrorist suspects while leaving undecided how to dispose of unresolved war crimes cases there. The new commander in chief visited the State Department to underscore a major theme of his young administration: that diplomacy will play a more central role Nike air Forcein American foreign policy — not just in seeking peace in the Middle East but also in defending the United States against global terrorist threats. He struck a tone designed to contrast with that of his predecessor, saying a new approach is overdue. "The inheritance of our young century demands a new era of American leadership," Obama said. "We must recognize that America's strength comes not just from the might of our arms or the scale of our wealth, but from our enduring values. And for the sake of our national security and the common aspirations of people around the globe, this era has to begin now." He said there would be no lasting peace in Afghanistan unless "spheres of opportunity" are expanded for Afghans and their neighbors in Pakistan, where al-Qaida and other extremist Nike air shox Nike air Forcegroups have found haven. "This is truly an international challenge of the highest order." Obama said. Obama offered no new formula for success in the struggle against Islamic extremists in Afghanistan, nor did he commit to a specific increase in U.S. troop strength there. He named former U.N. Ambassador Richard Holbrooke as a special coordinator of U.S. policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan. In an appearance with Obama and Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton at the State Department, Holbrooke said he would be working on the Afghan problem with a range of military leaders, including Gen. David Petraeus, who is responsible for combat operations there, as well as Gen. David McKiernan, the on-the-ground commander in Afghanistan, and Adm. Mike Mullen, the Joint Chiefs chairman. "If our resources are mobilized and coordinated and pulled together, we can quadruple, quintuple, multiply by tenfold the effectiveness of our efforts there," UGGHolbrooke said. Inheriting a war with no end in sight amid rising Taliban resistance, Obama said his administration was undertaking a "careful review" of policy on Afghanistan and Pakistan and would refocus attention on that region — a veiled reference to getting U.S. troops out of Iraq to enable a bigger commitment in Afghanistan. He painted a grim picture of Afghanistan's situation and raised the specter of future al-Qaida attacks. "The Afghan government has been unable to deliver basic Nike air shoxservices," he said. "Al-Qaida and the Taliban strike from bases embedded in rugged tribal terrain along the Pakistani border. And while we have yet to see another attack on our soil since 9/11, al-Qaida terrorists remain at large and remain plotting." On the Middle East, Obama struck themes familiar from his predecessor's administration. He backed Israel's right to defend itself, decried rocket attacks on Israel by the Islamist movement Hamas in the Gaza Strip, lamented "substantial suffering" and loss among civilians in Gaza and favored an international effort to develop a durable and sustainable cease-fire between Israel and Hamas. "Lasting peace requires more than a long cease-fire, and that's why I will sustain an active commitment to seek two states living side by side in peace and security," the president said, referring to Israel and a Palestinian state. He said George J. Mitchell, the retired Senate majority leader, will be his special envoy to the Middle East to carry forward a U.S. commitment to solidify the cease-fire in Gaza "as well as the effort to help Israel reach a broader peace with the Arab world that recognizes its rightful place in the community of nations." Obama stressed the importance of international humanitarian relief for Gaza. "Relief efforts must be able to reach innocent Palestinians who depend on them," he said. "The United States will fully support an international donor's conference to seek short-term humanitarian assistance and long-term reconstruction for the Palestinian economy. This assistance will be provided to and guided by the Palestinian Authority." He notably mentioned no such role for Hamas. Osama Hamdan, a Beirut-based spokesman for Hamas, dismissed Obama's remarks as nothing new. "Obama is still on the same path as previous leaders andNike air Force also will make the same mistakes as Bush that ignited the region instead of bringing stability," Hamdan told Al-Jazeera television. On her first day at the State Department, Clinton made a round of calls to foreign leaders, including Jordan's King Abdullah II. The Jordanian monarch pledged to work with the new administration to launch "serious and effective Mideast peace negotiations to reach the two-state solution as the only means to achieve security and stability in the region," according to a statement issued by the royal palace in Amman, Jordan. Clinton's call to Abdullah followed a call from Obama on Wednesday, who also expressed his commitment to achieving peace between the Arabs and the Israelis, the statement said. By ordering that the prison camp at Guantanamo Bay be closed by the end of the year, and by closing any remaining CIA secret prisons overseas and banning harsh interrogation practices, Nike air shoxObama said he was signaling that the U.S. would confront global violence without sacrificing "our values and our ideals." "First, I can say without exception or equivocation that the United States will not torture," he said. "Second, we will close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and determine how to deal with those who have been held there." Congressional Democrats welcomed the moves. "President Obama is ushering in a new era of smart, strong and principled national security policies, and Congress stands ready to work with him each step of the way," said Sen. Jay Rockefeller of West Virginia, outgoing chairman of the Intelligence Committee. But there was skeptical questioning from GOP leaders. House Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, said it "would be irresponsible to close this terrorist detainee facility" before important questions are resolved. Boehner said these include where will the detainees go when Guantanamo is closed and how will they be secured? The Bush administration was unable toUGG persuade other countries to accept any of the several dozen detainees who have been cleared for repatriation but remain in limbo at Guantanamo. Others there are deemed too dangerous to be released but were not facing war crimes trials because of complications with the evidence against them.

Orlando Magic have become a real threat in the East
And now, the Magic's Mystery Tour.
Lakerdom is gearing Shox Rollinup for Monday's game here with Cleveland, the latest in a series of, quote, possible Finals previews, unquote, but don't look now, there's one tonight too.
With less fanfare, or none, Nike Air Force 1 Midthe Lakers are about to play the NBA's hottest team, which doesn't happen to have LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce or Ray Allen.
This team isn't part of the old Lakers-Celtics rivalry or the new Celtics-Cavaliers rivalry, or any rivalry outside Florida.
The last time it got past the second round of the playoffs, Shaquille O'Neal played there. It was soShox Respond long ago, Shaq hadn't even heard of Kobe, although he was taking an increasingly dimmer view of Penny Hardaway.
Aw, you guessed it.
It's the Orlando Magic, which isn't mentioned in the same breath with the Lakers, Celtics and Cavaliers, but is right there with them at 31-8, which is even more impressive when you consider the Magic started 0-2.
This tour has been Magical, all right. After starting the trip with a win in San Antonio, the Magic dropped an NBA-record 23 three-pointers on the Kings in a 139-107 rout.
Even those pesky pundits have noticed.Shox Ride 2 II ESPN's Jeff Van Gundy said he was revising his earlier view that the Magic wasn't a serious contender.
Van Gundy is the brother of Orlando Coach Stan Van Gundy, so this is what you'd call a tough audience.
"What most of the people who are coaches or have been coaches in the league say, the record is what counts," said Stan at his team's practice Thursday in Hawthorne.
"That's what you're judged by. We could talk about subjective stuff and matchups and everything else, butNike Men Air Force 1 High 31-8 is 31-8.
"Cut it however you want, it's 31-8. Unlike some teams, we haven't played an inordinate number of home games. We haven't played five more games at home. As a matter of fact, by the end of the trip, we'll have played three more away.
"We're 31-8. Are we that good? Time will tell."
Actually, the Lakers have played six more at home. With their "road" game against the Clippers, they've been in Staples Center for 23 of 38 games.
But do people go around saying the Lakers have had a soft schedule?
N-o-o-o-o.
Dwight Howard, the Magic's 23-year-old prodigy, now blossoming into a superstar, tried Shox Bella ILtelling his Olympics teammates in China how good the Magic would be.
They were nice enough to listen politely, for a second or two.
"They kind of laughed it off a little bit," Howard said. "Which, the way we ended the season last year, you can understand."

Pilot Fakes Distress and Flees After Sending Plane to Crash
MIAMI — A financial adviser from Indiana disappeared into the Alabama woods earlyShox XT Monday after faking a distress call and parachuting from a small plane that crashed in Florida.
The police in three states were looking for the pilot, identified as Marcus Schrenker, 38.
No one was hurt in the crash. According to the police in Santa Rosa County in the Florida Panhandle, where the plane went down, Mr. Schrenker turned up safely about 220 miles north of there. And there is evidence that Mr. Schrenker was an experienced pilot who might have been trying to fake his own death.
His life seemed to be unraveling. Court records show that Mr. Schrenker’s wife filed for divorce on Dec. 30. A Maryland court recently issued a judgment of more than $500,000 against one of three Indiana companies registered in his name — and allShox Vivacity three are being investigated for securities fraud by the Indiana Secretary of State’s Office, a spokesman, Jim Gavin, said.
Mr. Schrenker has at least a decade of experience as a pilot, according to the airport in Anderson, Ind., where he departed Sunday evening. But the police said that within hours of taking off, he issued a distress call.
He told air traffic controllers that he was bleeding profusely and that the windshield of his Piper PA-46 turboprop had imploded. The control tower told him to try to land nearby, but instead he “appears to have intentionally abandoned the plane after putting it on autopilot over the Birmingham, Ala., area,” the police in Santa Rosa County said.
He next appeared in Childersburg, Ala., about 30 miles to the southeast, when he approached local officers at a store and said he had been in a canoeing accident. He was wet from the knees down and carried what the police described as “goggles that looked like they were made for ‘flying.’ ”
After checking his Indiana license, the officers drove Mr. Schrenker to a hotel. After learning of the abandoned plane, they returned, but his roomShox TW was empty.
Witnesses said a man believed to be Mr. Schrenker wearing a black toboggan cap had run into the woods next to the hotel.
He has not been seen since. The telephones at Mr. Schrenker’s home and one of his companies, Heritage Wealth Management, have been disconnected.
His piloting skills, however, can be seen in a YouTube video in which he flies under bridges in the Bahamas. “This stunt,” it says, “should not be tried by any pilot that wishes to stay alive.”

Democrat Is Winner in Recount of Minnesota Senate Race
ST. PAUL — Al Franken, the comedian who became a Democratic pundit and then a politician, won November’s election for the United States Senate by 225 votes out of 2.9 million cast, according to the finally completed recount results certified on Monday by the state’s independent Shox Basketball canvassing board.
But even as the board members were leaving the state office building across the street from the Capitol, Mr. Franken’s opponent, the Republican incumbent, Norm Coleman, said through his lawyers that the board’s work had been flawed and that he would challenge the recount in court.
“This process isn’t at an end — it is now just at the beginning,” said Tony Trimble, a lawyer for Mr. Coleman. “We will contest the results.”
Minnesota residents have probably become somewhat inured to revolving-door news days like this — an advance by one side countered by a bayonet charge from the other, each battling for inches.
But Monday’s certified recount number is a new chapter in the story. Before the board’s certification, the questions were broad: Had the election been conducted properly? Did the system as a whole work? And the geography extended to every county and city.
The Minnesota secretary of state, Mark Ritchie, who is also head of the canvassing board, said he believed good things were revealed about the democratic process in the state. The voting process had worked, Mr. Ritchie said, and while mistakes had been found by some local elections officials in throwing out perfectly good ballots, no evidence turned up of widespread fraud or malfeasance. The recount team had then done a good job retracing the steps of what voters had wanted on Election Day, Nike Shox Explodinehe said.
“It was as accurate as humanly possible within Minnesota law,” said Mr. Ritchie, a Democrat, referring to the recount. “I believe all lawful votes were counted.”
Mr. Coleman’s lawyers said the lawsuit would focus much more narrowly on batches of absentee votes that the campaign believed were either not recounted or recounted incorrectly. Under Minnesota law, Mr. Coleman has seven calendar days to file a contested election lawsuit, and there are some political experts who think he might change his mind and concede.
Mr. Trimble sounded anything but hesitant, though, and said the papers would be ready within 24 hours, mandating the creation of a three-judge panel to be chosen by the chief justice of the State Supreme Court.
For Mr. Coleman, the former mayor of St. Paul, who was elected to the Senate in 2002, the political calculus of whether to contest the election legally involves both national and state considerations. A contested election could take months to resolve, which might earn him some points with national Republican leaders, even if he failed to overturn the canvassing board’s decision, because it would keep one more Democrat out of the Senate through at least the early days of the Obama administration as immense issues like an economic stimulus and taxes are debated.
Countering that is how much a Shox VCcontinued battle could affect his political future within the state — he is 59 years old — if residents simply become fed up and blame him for having only one senator at a crucial moment in history.
And while 225 votes might seem like the narrowest of margins, some political experts say that finding a net shift of that margin in Mr. Coleman’s favor could be a big hill to climb.
“The big issue is where do you net 225?” said Lawrence R. Jacobs, a professor of political science and director of the Center for the Study of Politics and Governance at the University of Minnesota. “He needs to factor in that Franken is also likely to pick up votes — the absentees are not going to be only for Coleman.”

For Wade, Turnaround Took a Show of Strength
By Michael Lee
Washington Post Staff Writer
Friday, January 2, 2009; Page E01
MIAMI -- When Dwyane Wade arrived at Tim Grover's Attack Athletics gymnasium in Chicago last May, he was ready to repair his

left knee and reconstruct Nike air shoxhis career. Less than two years after winning the NBA Finals MVP in 2006, Wade's reckless,

relentless playing style had left him banged up and down a notch among the league's elite perimeter players -- though not

nearly as low as his Miami Heat had plummeted in the standings.
With some observers wondering if he had plateaued, grown complacent with his rapid rise to fame or was simply too injury

prone, Wade told Grover, the famed workout guru best-known for training Michael Jordan:Nike air shox "I got to get back to what got me

there."
Seeking merely to get healthy and return to the form that made him an NBA champion, Wade emerged from two months of arduous

training perhaps better than ever. The redemption began last summer in Beijing, where Wade came off the bench and was the

leading scorer on the gold medal-winning Olympic basketball team -- a team that featured friendly rivals LeBron James and

Kobe Bryant. And it has carried air maxover to the NBA's regular season, where Wade is now the league's leading scorer, averaging a

career-best 28.7 points, and has helped the Heat move beyond a franchise-worst 15-67 campaign.
"Going through injuries, going through a 15-win season, it's no secret everybody had written me off, saying I was this, that

and the third," Wade said. "I wanted to let everybody know that I do hear it. I'm going to do my job to shut everybody up.

When the Olympics came, I think I hushed a lot of people up -- but I have to keep doing it."
Wade often says that he plays with controlled anger, and he has had plenty to fuel him.
"Last year was the point in my life where it hasn't been as rosy -- on and off theCheap Air Jordan court," said Wade, who is separated from

his wife and the mother of his two children, Siohvaughn. "As an adult, as someone who is going to live life and goes through

some ups and downs, you know it's going to come. The only thing you can do is try to get through it, try to be who you are

through it and eventually know that the storm will be over. It's going to change."
The Heat (17-13) already has air jordansurpassed last season's win total -- a testament to Wade's talents, considering that Miami is

rebuilding on the fly with a rookie coach (Erik Spoelstra), a rookie point guard (Mario Chalmers) and limited depth and

experience.
"Dwyane's been fantastic, particularly from a leadership standpoint," Spoelstra said. "Every single day, from training camp,

he's led the way. He's shown the young guys this is important, this is how we do things with the Miami Heat, and here's what

it means to be a professional. I think for the first time in his career, he realizes everybody is looking to him to be the

leader. Not only by example, but to really tell people how to do it."
Wade isn't getting his points by just slashing and gliding to the rim. He developed a consistent midrange jumper last summer

in hopes of prolonging Shox Arraw+his career. He also isn't focused on just scoring; he ranks among the top 10 in assists and steals and

is averaging a career-high 1.5 blocks per game. "I've proven over the years that I can score a lot of points, sometimes at

will," said Wade, 26. "Now it's about putting it all together and being a complete player. If I'm a complete player, it will

make my team better.
"I felt in '06 in the Finals, that was the best I was at that point, but so far, for the regular season, I feel like, after

six years in the league, this is the best I've been," Wade said. "I hope I can say the same thing at eight years in this

league, nine years, and I Shox Pursuit+just get better and better."
Heat President Pat Riley shut down Wade in March of last season, a few weeks after dealing away Shaquille O'Neal to expedite

a rebuilding process. Riley determined that it wasn't worth Wade expending his energy when his body had never fully recovered

from surgeries on his shoulder and knee in the summer of 2007. Riley told Wade to get healthy, so Wade got Grover.
Wade, a native of the Chicago suburb of Robbins, Ill., had been working out with Grover since before he entered the NBA.

Grover designed a demanding rehabilitation program for Wade that focused on strengthening Wade's whole body, not just his

surgically repaired left knee, and restoring Wade's explosiveness. Desperately wanting to participate in the Beijing

Olympics, Wade was more than eager to cooperate. "He sort of went back to his first year in this league, when he had that

chip on his shoulder,"Shox Turbo V+ 5 Wade's agent, Henry Thomas, said. "He had to prove himself all over again."
Wade was in the gym four to five hours a day, five days a week, pushing his body to new extremes. Grover only asked Wade for

a six-week commitment. Wade gave him eight weeks.
"He's extremely self-motivated," Grover said of Wade in a recent phone interview. "There were times when he was down and we

had to push some buttons and push him through. We know the individual and how far we can push them. And with Dwyane, there

were no limits."
Grover assigned a physical therapist, a massage therapist and a basketball skills trainer to assist Wade in his

rehabilitation and workouts, which often were conducted alongside New York Knicks forward Quentin Richardson. Grover added

more than $200,000 worth of hydraulic training equipment to help Wade, who started out using no weights for his leg lifts and

finished the program pushing up four 45-pound weights on each leg.
"There was a lot of times I put myself through it and I kept thinking, 'When I get Shox NZhealthy, I got to make people pay for

this.' We did some things that had us dizzy sometimes," Wade said. "It was rough. Tim didn't take it easy on me at all. He

helped me push through my mental blocks that I had, knowing that I'm not injured no more and I have to push my body to get

stronger. I picked up a lot of muscle because of my workouts and I'm just healthy."
When Wade gained more confidence in his game, he called friends James and Chris Paul to work out and scrimmage with him for

two days at Grover's gym.
"D-Wade is a guy that's always proved doubters wrong, ever since he began playing the game of basketball," James said. "To

see him back healthy, back at 'Flash,' as you guys call him, it was good to see."
USA Basketball Managing Director Jerry Colangelo visited Wade in Chicago in June and determined he was fit to play in

Beijing. Wade repaid Colangelo's trust by scoring 27 points in the thrilling gold Shox Turbo+ IV 4medal victory over Spain. "We can argue who

the top three or four players are in the game, and he'd have to be in there somewhere," New York Knicks Coach Mike D'Antoni,

who was an assistant on the Olympic team, said of Wade. "He came way back and surprised us this summer. I'm thinking, 'I hope

he can play.' And he was probably our best guy."
Now that he is back in the discussion of the league's best player, Wade is focused on a much more challenging assignment. "My

job is to lead [the Heat] back to our winning ways," Wade said. "Everybody else that's up there, they have ready-made teams.

I've already had mine and I've won a championship. Now, I'm helping to rebuild an organization with this team. It feels

good."

Detroit loves a loser, why?

I can pretty much guarantee that the top issue for traffic on freep.com today and for the next several days will be the woeful Detroit Lions, the sacking of coach Rod Marinelli after a season of record-setting Shox Basketball futility, the search for a new coach, opinions about what the team needs to do to improve, etc. Who cares?

A lot of people do, clearly, and not just around here. The wonders of the Internet enable Michigan expatriates to join the conversation, too.

Yet in the grand scheme of things ailing Michigan, the state’s National Football League team is a mere blip. They have little to do with the economy, the real estate market, the auto industry (except for the Ford connection) or the education system, which are directly affecting millions of lives. The Lions don’t employ that many people and few of those they do are from this area, so this isn’t about jobs. They may not even be, on any given day, the most poorly run enterprise around here. They pay, relatively speaking, ridiculously high salaries for their featured employees who underperform and get about six months off each year. (On some NFL clubs, the players work up to an extra six weeks, but that‘s because they make the playoffs, Shox 2:40never an issue in Detroit.) The Lions certainly don’t give anyone a reason to move to Michigan, they don’t bring federal disaster aid to the state (although they may qualify for something from FEMA) and with so many home games blacked out for lack of ticket sales, they don’t even offer the Sunday afternoon distraction that fans in other parts of the country enjoy.

Plus, they have been relentlessly disappointing since, oh, 1957, the year of their last championship, while the other sports teams around here have all enjoyed at least periodic success.

So why do we let them get to us? If this was anything but a sports team, the emotional attachment would have been snipped long ago. You can only abuse the faithful so many times before they lose the faith, Shox Warriorright? Not with Detroit and the Lions. People may not be buying as many tickets, but they still care. Deeply.

I have often said that if the Lions ever did win a Super Bowl, this town would explode like never before. All the seasons of disappointment would be forgotten in an instant and scores of people would insist, in all honesty, that they never stopped caring.

How does this terrible, disappointing, poorly run football team keep its grip on people around here?

There’s an old song by Motown great Smokey Robinson, later covered by the Beatles, that seems appropriate:

I don't like you

But Shox Glamour III love you

Seems that I'm always

Thinkin' of you

Oh, ho, ho, you treat me badly

I love you madly

You've really got a hold on me

(Repeat, endlessly, where the Lions are concerned.)

Sacramento neighborhood safe after explosion The Associated Press RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif.—The neighborhood where an explosion destroyed a home on Christmas Eve, killing one person and injuring five others, was shut down briefly on Thursday Shox Energiaafter residents noticed a strong gas smell permeating the area. An investigation on Christmas morning revealed a leaking five-gallon propane tank, which was then sealed. The neighborhood has since been reopened. Investigators don't believe the leaking tank was related to Wednesday's explosion, and officials believe the area is safe again. "The area is considered safe at this time," said Jeff Smith, spokesman with PG&E. Officials believe Wednesday's explosion was caused by a natural gas leak. It destroyed one Shox Cognescentihouse, leaving only charred remains at the end of a residential cul-de-sac, and damaged two others. Fire officials estimated the structural damage to be approximately $700,000. The affected homes have been cordoned off, but a voluntary evacuation issued Wednesday has been lifted. The National Transportation Safety Board will take over the investigation into the source of the natural gas leak on Monday, but PG&E crews Shox 2:45will remain on the scene until then to make sure the area remains safe, Smith said. Fire investigators have not yet determined what ignited the flames. "The cause is undetermined because of so many variables," said Capt. Christian Pebbles with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District. "There are many possible sources—a light switch, a pilot light, static electricity." The explosion sent three victims to the University of California, Davis medical complex in Sacramento in critical condition. One of those victims, Wilbert Paana, 72, suffered a severe abdominal injuries and has died, according to hospital spokeswoman Phyllis Brown. Brown identified the other burn victims Shox BB4as Kim Dickson, in her mid- 40s, who is in critical condition, and 17-year-old Sunny Dickson, who was transferred later in the day to nearby Shriners Hospital for Children. Officials could not immediately say where the Dicksons and Paana were when the home exploded. Two others, including a utility worker, had lesser injuries. A firefighter was also injured and taken to Mercy San Juan Medical Center. He was treated and released, according to Pebbles. Pacific Gas & Electric Co. crews had been called to the street earlier in the day after someone reported smelling gas and were on scene when the home exploded. The injured utility worker was standing in the street at the time of the blast and was hospitalized with slight burns to the hand and cuts to the head, PG&E spokesman Brian Swanson said. Another utility worker had been in the Shox Electricneighborhood all morning investigating the report of a natural gas smell, he said. She was replaced in the afternoon by the employee who was injured. John Turner, who lives in a duplex about two blocks from the leveled home, said he heard "a big boom" shortly after 1:30 p.m. "It sounded like something had fallen on my roof," he said in a telephone interview. "I saw flames about as high as the house next door ... the smoke was billowing from that area." Turner, 30, said he did not smell anything but saw two PG&E trucks near the explosion site when he walked out of his house. Joe Helton, 33, said he was one of the first to arrive at the destroyed home and saw a woman from theShox TR house. "I asked her if there was anybody else in the house and she said her dad was in the house. So I ran to where the garage was, but it was pretty much smoke and fire in there," he said. Helton said he helped two next-door neighbors get out of their house and sat the injured PG&E worker down in a chair. He and others then discovered a man buried under wood shingles and debris about 10 feet from the sidewalk. "We started pulling stuff away. You couldn't even tell he was there; the stuff was covering him," Helton said. The cul-de-sac where the home was located backs up to Highway 50, a major route between Sacramento and South Shox Turbo OZLake Tahoe that had heavy Christmas Eve traffic. Rancho Cordova is about 10 miles east of the state capital. ——— Associated Press Writers Don Thompson in Sacramento and Terry Collins in San Francisco contributed to this report.

  House approves auto industry bailout

Tags : House approves auto industry bailout Comments (1) Category : General

Reporting from Washington -- The House approved a $14-billion bailout for U.S. automakers Wednesday after the White House and Democratic leaders finalized a deal empowering a government "car czar" to force the companies into bankruptcy by next spring if they don't restructure. But the fate of the plan -- and of some of the Jordan 18 nation's most storied companies and brand names -- remained uncertain because of deep-seated Republican opposition in the Senate, where Democrats cannot pass the bill without GOP help. Supporters, including administration officials, Democratic congressional leaders and many independent economists, warned that hundreds of thousands of jobs could be lost and hundreds of related businesses damaged or destroyed if one or more of the U.S. automakers failed. "The consequences of defeating this bill would be disaster for the economy that is already in trouble," House Financial Services Committee Chairman Barney Frank (D-Mass.) told his colleagues during the debate. The vote was 237-170, with 32 Republicans joining 205 Democrats in supporting it. Jordan 13 The White House dispatched Vice President Dick Cheney, Chief of Staff Josh Bolton and top economic advisor Edward Lazear to Capitol Hill to sell the deal, but they were barraged by questions during a two-hour, closed-door meeting and failed to secure much, if any, support, senators said. Jordan 14 "People are rightly concerned that the automakers and unions won't follow through. Many simply don't believe that the changes that need to be made will be made," Sen. John Sununu (R-N.H.) said after meeting. He said Cheney, Bolton and Lazear acknowledged that the bill wasn't as strong as they would have liked but urged Republicans to support it. Jordan 15 Many Republicans are weary of government bailouts and worry that providing money to automakers will lead other industries to seek aid. Many on Capitol Hill also are convinced they should have attached more strings to the $700-billion Wall Street bailout. Jordan 16 A central goal of White House and congressional negotiators has been to design a bill tough enough on the Detroit automakers and United Auto Workers Union to pass muster in Congress. "It's a bill that provides bridge financing to one of two possibilities . . . fundamental restructuring or bankruptcy," said Joel Kaplan, White House deputy chief of staff for policy. "We wanted to make sure it was tough and that this was not a bridge financing to nowhere." Jordan 17 Days ago, negotiators slashed the $34 billion requested by the Big Three executives to a more modest stopgap fund -- just enough to keep General Motors and Chrysler afloat until spring. Negotiators also agreed to create a federal monitor, appointed by the president, to oversee the companies' efforts to restructure their operations to assure future viability. Senate Democrats aimed to have a vote by the end of the week. In the final stages of the negotiations, the presidentially appointed monitor was given authority to act as a de facto bankruptcy judge with great power over the operations and future shape of companies accepting government aid. Jordan 18 GM has said it needs $10 billion to make it until March 31 and Chrysler has asked for $4 billion. Ford has said it does not need emergency loans at this point, but it's unclear if it will participate in the government-supervised restructuring to get money later. Through the first three quarters of this year, GM and Ford have lost a combined $30 billion; while through November sales for all three carmakers combined have declined 22% compared with 2007 -- that's nearly 1.7 million fewer cars and trucks sold in the U.S. Chrysler, which is a private company, has not disclosed its financial results. Jordan 18 If the restructuring plans don't meet standards set out in the bill for demonstrating future viability, such as refinancing existing debt and becoming competitive with other automakers on costs and the types of vehicles produced, the government would be required to recall a company's loan, which would almost certainly trigger bankruptcy. The plans must be submitted by March 31, or by April 30 if the monitor agrees to a one-time extension because workable plans are nearing completion. Jordan 13 The legislation would prohibit any additional federal money to the automakers if they failed to come up with an acceptable restructuring plan, but would open the door to longer-term government financing if they do. The auto czar also would have veto power over any transactions exceeding $100 million by the companies while the loans were outstanding. Washington would receive ownership stakes in the companies in exchange for the loans. And the bill contains a prohibition on stock dividends, restrictions on executive compensation and severance packages, and a requirement that companies receiving loans not own or lease private aircraft. GM supports the bill. Chrysler did not directly back the legislation but said it was encouraged by the progress. Jordan 18 Even with the tougher provisions added, at least a half-dozen Senate opponents say they prefer the companies to declare bankruptcy now and restructure afterward rather than get government help. "I think there's still some effort that has to be made," said Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio), a strong supporter of the auto industry who said he would vote for the legislation. Democrats hold a narrow 50-49 Senate majority and they need at least 10 Republicans to vote for the bailout to overcome procedural hurdles. Centrist Republicans such as Susan Collins of Maine and Norm Coleman of Minnesota said they were undecided. Coleman echoed several other Jordan 13 lawmakers in saying he wanted the car czar to have more power to force the companies, unions and other stakeholders to restructure. One of the leading opponents, Sen. Richard Shelby (R-Ala.), called the bill a "travesty" that would remove the incentive for the automakers to make major changes and lead to billions more in government money in the future. "Unless Chrysler, Ford and General Motors become lean and innovative and competitive in the marketplace, this is only delaying their funeral," he said. The size of the bailout was reduced from $15 billion in previous drafts to the $14 billion GM and Chrysler said they needed. At White House insistence, the money comes from an existing $25-billion loan fund created to help U.S. Jordan 14 automakers retool their factories to make more energy-efficient cars. The bill authorized Congress to replenish the fund, which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has promised to do early next year. The final sticking point was overcome when congressional Democrats removed a controversial provision to require automakers to stop funding lawsuits against California and more than a dozen other states over new limits on greenhouse Jordan 15 gas emissions. The White House had told Democratic leaders there was no chance the bill would pass if that provision remained. But the new state emissions standards continued to complicate the legislation, resulting in the House and Senate considering two slightly different versions that could further delay final action. The House version requires automakers taking money "to comply with applicable fuel efficiency and emissions requirements." But some Jordan 16 Senate Republicans balked at the language, noting it encompassed the new state limits in California and elsewhere. The version of the bill introduced by Senate Democrats said automakers only must comply with federal fuel efficiency standards. The different versions would have to be reconciled before any bill could go to President Bush for his signature. Puzzanghera and Hook are writers in our Washington bureau.

Obama recruits critic of Bush's Iraq strategy

Barack Obama chose a general sacked by the Bush administration for doubting its Iraq war strategy for his cabinet yesterday to appeal to leftwing supporters. Obama, in announcing the selection of Eric Shinseki, as veterans' affairs secretary, made it clear that he saw the choice as vindication of a general whose advice - had it been heeded -cheap runescape gold could have reduced the toll of the Iraq war. Shinseki, who was army chief of staff only to be disregarded and later vilified by Pentagon chief at the time, Donald Rumsfeld, and the deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, for telling Congress in February 2003 that keeping order in Iraq after the invasion would need several hundred thousand troops. "No one will ever doubt that this former army chief Air Jordan 18 of staff has the courage to stand up for our troops and our veterans," Obama told a press conference in Chicago announcing the appointment yesterday. The choice of Shinseki could go some way in satisfying opponents of the Iraq war disappointed at the appointment of Hillary Clinton, who voted for the invasion, as secretary mabinogi money of state, and the decision to keep on George Bush's Pentagon chief, Robert Gates. It was announced on a day when Obama offered his bleakest assessment to date of the economic crisis. "The economy is going to get worse before it gets better," he told NBC television. He announced the biggest public works expenditure in half a century in his weekly radio on video address on Saturday, saying there would be projects to improve roads and bridges, make public schools more energy efficient, and computerise medical records. He said he was focused on projects that would warhammer cd keycreate the most jobs in short order, saying the economy was like a critically ill patient who needed a blood transfusion for survival. Shinseki, 66, is a decorated combat veteran and lost most of his right foot in Vietnam. He is the highest ranking general of Asian-American descent, and his cabinet announcement appeared timed yesterday to coincide with the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbour. The general earned the wrath of Rumsfeld when he told Congress that it might take several hundred thousand US troops to control Iraq after the invasion. The deputy defence secretary, Paul Wolfowitz, Air Jordan 17 said Shinseki's assessment was "wildly off the mark". Both men boycotted Shinseki's retirement ceremony. George Bush acknowledged Shinseki was correct when he ordered the surge into Iraq in 2007. His appointment was seen yesterday as further vindication. "It was wrong for the Bush Administration to mistreat him the way it did," Carl Levin, the chairman of the armed services committee told Fox television. He said the choice of Shinseki was a signal that Obama would tolerate dissenting views. Richard Shelby, a Republican Senator for Alabama, Air Jordan 16 also praised the choice. It could also shore up morale among veterans. The Bush Administration has been accused of underestimating the numbers of wounded soldiers returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Mortgage holiday plan leaves confusion

By Alex Barker, Jim Pickard and Jane Croft

Published: December 4 2008 02:00 | Last updated: December 4 2008 02:00 Britain's biggest mortgage lenders were last night struggling to work out the details of a hastily arranged scheme designed to prop up the housing market and add lustre to andofus jol otherwise dull Queen's Speech. Senior bankers were given just a day's notice of Gordon Brown's plan to offer a state-backed mortgage holiday to some families struggling with repayments, leaving a raft of details to be settled in coming weeks. Questions remain over who is eligible, how the scheme will operate, what effect it Air Jordan 18will have on the housing market, what compensation lenders will receive for lost interest and what liability will be assumed by taxpayers. So far the government has said the scheme will apply to mortgages of up to £400,000 and cover households that experience "a significant or temporary loss of income". Eligible borrowers would be able to defer a proportionrunescape power leveling of their interest payments for up to two years. The missed payments would be added to the principle and the mortgage extended so it could be paid over a longer period. The main inducement for lenders is a broad government guarantee to reimburse any losses from the payment holiday if the borrower eventually defaults. Officials estimate the guarantee will appear on government books as a "contingent liability" of £1bn, but will cost about £100m. The assumptionsAir Jordan 15 behind the calculation were not disclosed. Shelter, the homelessness charity, estimated the scheme could help up to 100,000 homeowners. Adam Sampson, chief executive, said it had "the virtue of simplicity" and was "exactly what we were looking for". The main lenders, which were given a broadrunescape items description of the scheme on Tuesday afternoon, said it was "workable". But most echoed the Council of Mortgage Lenders in stressing that the "devil will be in the detail". Conditions for eligibility are likely to be the most controversial aspect of the scheme, defining both its scope and impact on the wider market. Affordability standards will need to be set and clear rules for verifying income. Officials suggest there is likely to be some means-testing, with people holding savings of more than £16,000 - the national average - excluded. Safeguards will be required to prevent borrowers "gaming the system" by living off the taxpayer for two years and then handing in their keys. Air Jordan 18These conditions will be critical in preventing any backlash among taxpayers unhappy at reckless borrowers being bailed out. Downing Street admits that home repossessions will continue, in spite of the scheme. But the protection is likely to slow the pace significantly. Offering this lifeline to borrowers may have unpredictable effects on house prices, as it could prevent a wave of forced sales - at least till 2011. The CML said there were still "outstanding Air Jordan 15questions at the end of the two-year period in relation to house prices and arrears unless the market picked up. We just haven't seen the detail; we are not looking at a detailed scheme yet". Some bankers highlighted uncertainty over what would happen if borrowers were protected by insurance against losing their job. Indeed the scheme cast a shadow over the entire mortgage payment protection insurance market, which the Competition Commission recently found to be uncompetitive and often over-priced. Another problem for lenders will be the loss of cash flow over the holiday period. Officials have signalled that they may be willing to loosen capital requirements. It remains unclear whether interest will be levied on the deferred interest. Finally, there is the question of whether the most aggressive lenders in seeking repossessions will join the scheme at all. Meanwhile, Mr Brown yesterday confirmed that Air Jordan 18he would toughen up banking regulations to ensure small companies received fair treatment, with the threat of fines for those that breached the rules. The Financial Services Authority will incorporate the existing voluntary code for individual customers under its regulation, while also making a separate and largely toothless code for business lending statutory. Angela Knight, chief executive of the British Bankers' Association, said the move would give more certainty to customers and banks and said her members had been workingAir Jordan 18 with the FSA and government on the rules. But she said that she wanted the rules to be widely applied in the financial services industry. "Many different entities provide lending to people and to businesses and clearly these need to be included in any legislative requirements," she said. Additional reporting by Jim Pickard

  Detroit's auto bubble pain

Detroit's auto bubble pain Automakers are suffering because sales were artificially boosted by cheap credit and the Big Three thought this could last forever. By Chris Isidore, CNNMoney.com senior writer November 30, 2008: 6:59 PM ET NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- Automakers are counting on a rebound in demand by 2010. But that could turn out to be unrealistic because of an "auto bubble" Air Jordan 13the Big Three helped to create during the past few years. Cheap financing, easy credit conditions and attractive pricing on cars due to overcapacity in the U.S. auto market caused record sales earlier this decade. Experts agree those three conditions are going torunescape powerleveling be missing for years to come, and that sales will continue to be weaker than normal at least through 2011 or 2012. And that may make it a lot tougher for executives of General Motors, Ford Motor and Chrysler LLC to make the case that they have a viable turnaround plan when they again appeal to Washington for $25 billion in bridge loans later this week. The Big Three will present their business plans to Congress on Tuesday, and appear before a Senate committee Wednesday and a House panel Friday. "It's going to take us many years to get back to a trend level of sales, let alone the levels you might hope to see," said Bob Schnorbus, chief economist with J.D. Power &warhammer accounts Associates. From 1999 through 2006, U.S. auto sales averaged 16.9 million vehicles a year. Before that period, there was only one year when annual sales even hit 16 million. And these strong years came at a time when the number of licensed drivers was posting a modest 1.1% annual gain, suggesting that the sales increases were way ahead of fundamentals. In other words, people bought new cars or trucks because they could, not because they necessarily needed to. "We had above-trend years, some of which was caused by Air Jordan 14an incredible growth in household net wealth that later we found wasn't real," said George Pipas, director of sales analysis and reporting for Ford Motor. Pipas added that sales were "artificially high" in other years "due to a higher and higher level of incentive spending.". "Now when we look back, we see elements of a bubble," he said. "Does that present a problem today? Of course." The bubble-inspired mistakes The fact that sales were that strong for that long led thewarhammer time cart automakers to make mistakes about their production capacity that they are now paying for dearly. The strong sales also allowed General Motors (GM, Fortune 500), Ford Motor (F, Fortune 500) and Chrysler LLC to generate healthy profits, which led them to agree to contracts with the United Auto Workers union that they ultimately couldn't afford over the long-haul. But as import brands started to eat into Detroit's market share, it became tougher for the Big Three to stay profitable. By 2005, GM and Ford were losing money on their North American auto operations. Chrysler joined them losing money a year later. In response, they all closed factories and cut staff to bring their capacity more in line with demand. But they didn't cut deeply enough. Each of the Big Three is now making additional cuts inAir Jordan 15 capacity, especially for sport/utility vehicles and other light trucks. That is a sign that these companies did not accurately predict how sharply demand could fall once the auto bubble burst. Detroit wasn't alone in making this mistake. Toyota Motor (TM) and other Asian and European automakers increased their U.S. capacity earlier this decade as well. Toyota has since had to cut its sales and profit outlook because of the weakness in the U.S. It and other Asian automakers have also been forced to rely on bigger cash-back offers and other profit-sapping incentives to boost sales. J.D. Power believes that U.S. sales won't again reach the 16 million vehicle level until 2012 at the earliest. And Schnorbus said he isn't confident that sales will reach that target by then. This is an astonishing fact when you consider that many in the industry had previously thought 16 million in annual sales was a sign of relatively low demand Air Jordan 16until the current collapse in sales. Even GM CEO Rick Wagoner conceded in testimony to Congress recently that the level of auto sales reached during the boom years are probably out of reach for the foreseeable future. "We think that was actually, probably, in retrospect, higher than a normal trend because of the low energy cost and the cheap credit," Wagoner said. Pop goes the market Another sign of just how out of whack the market got by the middle of the decade was that there were far more many vehicles on the road than actual registered drivers. This has long been the case, due mainly to the number of cars and trucks owned by businesses. But that gap grew much wider during the boom years. In 1998, warhammer accounts there were about 12 million more vehicles than drivers in 1998. By 2006, the difference grew to 34 million.. That kind of imbalance couldn't be maintained, even before the economy fell off a cliff. To that end, U.S. sales slowed to 16.1 million in 2007 and have plunged this year thanks to high gas prices earlier in the year and then the credit crunch. Sales are now at their worst levels in 25 years, with a seasonally-adjusted annual rate of only 10.5 million vehicles in October. And when adjusted for population, GM said October was the worst month for the industry since the end of World War II. November sales, which will be announced on Tuesday, are likely to be comparable to October's total. For the full year, sales are expected to be just over 13 million andAir Jordan 17 the automakers themselves are forecasting a drop to around 12 million in 2009. But the Big Three is hoping sales will start to bounce back in 2010 thanks to pent-up demand. They argue that this rebound, combined with additional cost cuts and labor contract savings they'll see that year, will get back on their feet financially. David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research, a Michigan think tank supportive of the bailout, said he still believes that sales can bounce back quickly because they've fallen so dramatically during this downturn. "Right now we're at depression level sales. Sales of 14Air Jordan 18 million a year is what we'd expect for recession levels," he said. But he agrees that the bubble that occurred during the boom is a big reason why Detroit is in such serious trouble. Now that it has burst, there is no easy way out of the crisis for the Big Three. "We had easy credit so we had inflated sales for several years," he said. "That's part of the price being paid right now."

No Keyboard? And You Call This a BlackBerry?

By DAVID POGUE

Published: November 26, 2008 Research in Motion (R.I.M.), the company that brought us the BlackBerry, has been on a roll lately. For a couple of years now, it’s delivered a series of gorgeous, functional, supremely reliable smartphones that, to this day, outsell even the much-adored iPhone. Here’s a great example of the intelligence that drives R.I.M.: The phones all have simple, memorable, logical names instead of incomprehensible model numbers. There’s the BlackBerry Pearl Air Jordan 18(with a translucent trackball). The BlackBerry Flip (with a folding design). The BlackBerry Bold (with a stunning design and faux-leather back). Well, there’s a new one, just out ($200 after rebate, with two-year Verizon contract), officially called the BlackBerry Storm. But I’ve got a better name for it: the BlackBerry Dud. The first sign of trouble was the concept: a touch-screen BlackBerry. mabinogi money That’ s right — in its zeal to cash in on some of that iPhone touch-screen mania, R.I.M. has created a BlackBerry without a physical keyboard. Hello? Isn’t the thumb keyboard the defining feature of a BlackBerry? A BlackBerry without a keyboard is like an iPod without a scroll wheel. A Prius with terrible mileage. Cracker Jack without a prize inside. R.I.M. hoped to soften the blow by endowing its touch screen with something extra: clickiness. The entire screen acts like a mouse button. Press hard enough, and it actually responds with a little plastic click. As a result, the Storm offers two degrees of touchiness. You can tap the screen lightly, or you can press firmly to register the palpable click. It’s not a bad idea. In fact, it ought to make the on-screen keyboard feel more like actual keys. In principle, you could design a brilliant operating system where the two kinds of taps do two different things. Tap lightly to type a letter — click fully to get a pop-up menu of accented characters (é, è, ë and so on). runescape power levelingTap lightly to open something, click fully to open a shortcut menu of options. And so on. Unfortunately, R.I.M.’s execution is inconsistent and confusing. Where to begin? Maybe with e-mail, the most important function of a BlackBerry. On the Storm, a light touch highlights the key but doesn’t type anything. It accomplishes nothing — a wasted software-design opportunity. Only by clicking fully do you produce a typed letter. It’s too much work, like using a manual typewriter. (“I couldn’t send two e-mails on this thing,” said one disappointed veteran.) It’s no help that the Storm shows you two different keyboards, Air Jordan 17depending on how you’re holding it (it has a tilt sensor like the iPhone’s). When you hold it horizontally, you get the full, familiar Qwerty keyboard layout. But when you turn it upright, you get the less accurate SureType keyboard, where two letters appear on each “key,” and the software tries to figure out which word you’ re typing. For example, to type “get,” you press the GH, ER and TY keys. Unfortunately, that’s also “hey.” You can see the problem. And trying to enter Web addresses or unusual last names is utterly hopeless. Furthermore, despite having had more than a year to study the iPhone, R.I.M. has failed to exploit the virtues of an on- screen keyboard. A virtual keyboard’s keys can change, permitting you to switch languages or even alphabet systems within a single sentence. A virtual keyboard can offer canned blobs of text like “.com” Air Jordan 16and “.org” when it senses that you’re entering a Web address, or offer an @ key when addressing e-mail. But not on the Storm. Incredibly, the Storm even muffs simple navigation tasks. When you open a menu, the commands are too close together; even if your finger seems to be squarely on the proper item, your click often winds up activating something else in the list. To scroll a list, you’re supposed to flick your finger across the runescape accountsscreen, just as on the iPhone. But even this simple act is head-bangingly frustrating; the phone takes far too long to figure out that you’re swiping and not just tapping. It inevitably highlights some random list item when you began to swipe, and then there’s a disorienting delay before the scrolling begins. There’s no momentum to the scrolling, either, as on the iPhone or a Google phone; you can’t flick faster to scroll farther. Scrolling through a long list of phone numbers or messages, therefore, is exhausting. Nor is that the Storm’s only delayed reaction. It can take two full seconds for the screen image to change when you turn it 90 degrees, three seconds for a program to appear, five seconds forAir Jordan 15 a button-tap to register. (Remember: To convert seconds into BlackBerry time, multiply by seven.) In short, trying to navigate this thing isn’t just an exercise in frustration — it’s a marathon of frustration. I haven’t found a soul who tried this machine who wasn’t appalled, baffled or both. And that’s before they discovered that the Storm doesn’t have Wi-Fi. It can’t get onto the Internet using wireless hot spots, like the iPhone or other BlackBerrys. Verizon’s high-speed (3G) cellular Internet network is now in 258 American cities, but that’s still a far cry from everywhere. But wait, there’s less. Both of my review Storms had more bugs than a Air Jordan 14summer picnic. Freezes, abrupt reboots, nonresponsive controls, cosmetic glitches. My favorite: When I try to enter my Gmail address, the Storm’s camera starts up unexpectedly, turning the screen into a viewfinder — even though the keyboard still fills half the screen. (R.I.M. executives steadfastly refused to acknowledge any bugs. I even sent them videos of the Storm’s goofball glitches, but they offered only stony phone silence.) It’s all too bad, because behind that disastrous software and balky screen, there’s a very nice phone. It runs, after all, on Verizon’s excellent cellphone network. If you’re one of the few remaining rich people in this country, you can even use this phone overseas (roaming rates are as high as $5 a minute). The phone features are excellent; calls are loud and clear. The Storm has voice dialing, copy-and-paste, programmable side buttons, removable battery and a standard headphone jack. You can open and even edit Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint attachments.Air Jordan 13 Even Mac fans can get in on the action, thanks to a free copy of the Pocket Mac software. You also get expandable storage; an eight-gigabyte memory card comes in the box. The Web browser is the best yet on a BlackBerry: double-tap to zoom, drag a finger to scroll. The camera is dog slow, but it has a very good flash, a 2X zoom and a stabilizer; it takes decent, if pale, pictures and movies. (And goodness knows, it’s easy to start up. Just enter a Gmail address ...) There’s even GPS, with turn-by-turn directions as you drive ($10 a month extra). The Storm can show voice mail in an Inbox- like list, like the iPhone does ($3 a month extra). The screenAir Jordan 18 (480 x 360 pixels) is bright and beautiful. Honestly, though, you’ll probably never get that far. When you look at your typing, slow and typo-ridden, and you repair the dents you’ve made banging your head against the wall, you’ll be grateful that Verizon offers a 30-day return period. How did this thing ever reach the market? Was everyone involved just too terrified to pull the emergency brake on this train? Maybe R.I.M. is just overextended. After all, it has just introduced three major new phones — Flip, Bold, Storm — in two months, each with a different software edition. Quality-controlAir Jordan 14 problems are bound to result; the iPhone 3G went through something similar. Web rumor has it that a bug-fix software update is in the works. Until then, maybe Storm isn’t such a bad name for this phone. After all — it’s dark, sodden and unpredictable.

MONTREAL - Marc Trestman's first Grey Cup Game ended in disappointment, but the long-time NFL offensive guru is Jordan 18already looking ahead to next year. Trestman took the Montreal Alouettes to the CFL championship game in his first season as a head coach, only to be beaten 22-14 by the Calgarywarhammer items Stampeders before 66,308 at Olympic Stadium on Sunday night. It was the fifth time in six Grey Cups since 2000 that Montreal has lost, but it was a first for Trestman, the 52-year-old who was a quarterbacks coach or offensive co-ordinator for seven NFL clubs over the past 20 years. ''These are tough situations,'' he said. Jordan 16 ''We take high risks to do what we do, and when we put ourselves out there in front of a country and it doesn't work out, it's a big hit. ''It's happened to this team before and to individual players before, but every year's a new season. I would rather be on this ride and fail runescape itemsthan not be on it at all. I would hope the players feel the same way. It's the team and the relationships they've built that they should take the most out of, rather than winning or losing. But every competitor handles things differently.'' Trestman took over a team that had gone 8-10 with general manager Jim Popp doing double duty as head coach in 2007 and took them to first place Jordan 15 in the East Division with an 11-7 record. The Alouettes downed Edmonton 36-26 in the East final last week. He had barely looked at Canadian football before taking the job, but spent the winter studying tapes and showed up for camp ready. The quick-release offence he installed revived veteran quarterback Anthony Calvillo's career and the team scored a
